What Obama Watches on TV

December 29, 2013 at 10:31 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “These days, when Mr. Obama retreats to the White House residence after a long day on the other end of the colonnade, he is working his way through the DVD box set of AMC’s Breaking Bad, the award-winning TV drama about a drug-dealing high school teacher. The show just ended after five seasons, but the president is way behind and frequently reminds those around him not to give anything away.”

“Friends say Mr. Obama is also keenly awaiting the new season of the Netflix show House of Cards, which starkly depicts a dysfunctional Washington — a theme that must seem all too familiar. At a meeting of technology executives last week, Mr. Obama jokingly lamented his own inability to maneuver the halls of Congress in the way of Kevin Spacey’s character, Frank Underwood.”

December 29, 2013 at 5:28 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Verge: “According to a new report from Der Spiegel based on internal NSA documents, the signals intelligence agency’s elite hacking unit (TAO) is able to conduct sophisticated wiretaps in ways that make Hollywood fantasy look more like reality. The report indicates that the NSA, in collaboration with the CIA and FBI, routinely and secretly intercepts shipping deliveries for laptops or other computer accessories in order to implant bugs before they reach their destinations.”

Single Party Control Pushes States in Opposite Directions

December 29, 2013 at 10:48 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Balz: “Political polarization has ushered in a new era in state government, where single-party control of the levers of power has produced competing Americas. One is grounded in principles of lean and limited government and on traditional values; the other is built on a belief in the essential role of government and on tenets of cultural liberalism.”

“These opposing visions have been a staple of national elections, and in a divided Washington, this polarization has resulted in gridlock and dysfunction. But today, three-quarters of the states — more than at any time in recent memory — are controlled by either Republicans or Democrats. Elected officials in these states are moving unencumbered to enact their party’s agenda.”

Cruz Set to Renounce Canadian Citizenship

December 29, 2013 at 10:40 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has retained legal counsel that he says “is preparing the paperwork to renounce the citizenship,” the Dallas Morning News reports.

“He expects to complete the process in 2014. That time frame jibes with predictions from Canadian legal experts.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

“I don’t worry about gifts — I love that part of the tradition! When people wring their hands about the presents, I get it, though. It costs money and sometimes people aren’t as thankful as you think they should be when you spend your time and money on them.”

— Sarah Palin, quoted by the Anchorage Daily News which adds, “Wonder who she has in mind.”

Polling Comes to Afghanistan

December 29, 2013 at 8:57 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “In the 12 years since the United States helped oust the Taliban, Afghanistan has held four national elections. But Afghans are only now experiencing a phenomenon that has been upending conventional wisdom in more established democracies for decades: polling.”

“Three recent polls are giving Afghans a crash course in front-runners, horse-race coverage and candidates who eagerly dismiss any numbers that do not put them out front, topics familiar to Americans.”

Quote of the Day

“We all wear thin with the American people after a while. To count a man of that talent out at this point in time in his administration would be a huge mistake.”

— Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), quoted by the AP, on President Obama’s declining poll numbers.

Hooker Dishes on Spitzer

December 29, 2013 at 7:54 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Out next week: Call Girl Confidential: An Escort’s Secret Life as an Undercover Agent by Rebecca Kade.

New York Post: “Eliot Spitzer lusted after violence, a former hooker says in a new tell-all book — revealing in graphic detail how the love gov pinned her to a bed inside a posh, Murray Hill apartment and then gripped her by the neck until she feared for her safety. The violence was scripted by Spitzer, who wanted his hooker to follow a role-play dialogue in which she would pretend she had just taken a self-defense class.”

Obama Rarely Attends Church

December 29, 2013 at 7:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Obama celebrated a low-key Christmas in Hawaii this year… But the one thing the president and his family did not do — something they have rarely done since he entered the White House — was attend Christmas church services,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Obama has gone to church 18 times during his six years in the White House, according to Mark Knoller of CBS News, an unofficial White House historian, while his predecessor, Mr. Bush, attended 120 times during his eight years in office.”

New York City Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio’s swearing-in event “will feature two of the biggest names in Democratic politics: former President Bill Clinton and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton,” Politicker reports.

‘Don’t Tread on Me’ Plate Very Popular in Virginia

December 29, 2013 at 7:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A Virginia license plate with the Tea Party-embraced ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ logo is a big seller, suggesting the movement remains popular, at least in the state, even after a tough loss in this year’s gubernatorial election,” Fox News reports.

Virginian-Pilot: “Demand for the specialty plate canonizing the limited-government group’s rallying cry has made the tag one of the most coveted in the state, despite being available for just 20 months.”

West Virginia Democrats Face Uphill Fight

December 29, 2013 at 5:39 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Although Democrats have owned West Virginia’s two Senate seats since the Eisenhower administration, Republicans are eyeing this state as one of their best bets as they seek to win a Senate majority next year,” the New York Times reports.

“An accelerating rightward tilt here was reflected recently in an awkward two-step by the Democratic nominee for an open seat, Natalie Tennant, as she distanced herself from the White House after a fund-raising trip to New York.”

Incoming DA Refuses to Sit on Predecessor’s Toilet Seat

December 28, 2013 at 5:18 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Brooklyn District Attorney-elect Ken Thompson is happy to be taking Charles Hynes’ seat next week — but he says the veteran lawman can keep his throne,” the New York Post reports.

Said a source close to the outgoing DA: “Thompson wants a new toilet seat installed in the DA’s private bathroom because he doesn’t want to sit on the same toilet seat that Hynes sat on.”

Big Mistake by Utah’s Attorney General

December 28, 2013 at 11:07 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Andrew Koppleman says “an underreported story in the Utah same-sex marriage case is the incompetence of the Utah Attorney General’s office in litigating the case.”

“Typically, in same-sex marriage litigation, the state accompanies its pleadings with a routine request that, if the trial court rules in favor of the same-sex couples, that ruling be stayed pending the inevitable appeal. That way no licenses can issue until the question is finally resolved. Until now, courts have generally agreed that the question of same-sex marriage is doubtful enough that the status quo should be preserved during the litigation. Everyone agrees that it would be unfortunate for marriage licenses to issue, and couples to order their lives in reliance on them, only to have those licenses voided on appeal.”

“In Utah, however, the state inexplicably neglected to request a stay before the ruling issued.”

“It’s no longer just a piece of paper that you can repeal and it goes away. There’s something there. We have to recognize that reality. We have to deal with the people that are currently covered under Obamacare.”

— Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), quoted by the New York Times, on the increased difficulty Republicans will have ending Obamacare.

Quote of the Day

December 28, 2013 at 8:41 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Have we eliminated anything? No. We haven’t. I can’t think of a single major agency that we’ve gotten rid of. Or a role of government that we’ve gotten rid of.”

— Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC), quoted by the Washington Post.

Benefits End for One Million Unemployed

December 28, 2013 at 8:35 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“An emergency federal program that acts as a lifeline for 1.3 million jobless workers will end on Saturday, drastically curtailing government support for the long-term unemployed and setting the stage for a major political fight in the new year,” the New York Times reports.

“The program, in place since the recession started in 2008, provides up to 47 weeks of supplemental unemployment insurance payments to jobless people looking for work. Its expiration is expected to have far-reaching ramifications for the economy, cutting job growth by about 300,000 positions next year and pushing hundreds of thousands of households below the poverty line.”

“When the federal program expires, just one in four unemployed Americans will receive jobless benefits — the smallest proportion in half a century.”

The Los Angeles Times has “six things to know about why long-term jobless benefits went away and who is affected by the change.”
