Who is the 2016 Dark Horse?

November 11, 2013 at 6:27 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ron Fournier: “The election is three years away. It might as well be three decades away given the speed of modern culture. In 2005, three years before the Obama-McCain general election, USA Today published the result of a poll showing New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani as the front-runner for the 2008 GOP nomination.”

“Among Democrats, Clinton lapped the pack with 40 percent support. She led both Sens. John Kerry and John Edwards, the 2004 ticket. Obama was not even mentioned. That raises the question: Who is the 2016 dark horse?”

Will Warren Challenge Clinton in 2016?

November 10, 2013 at 9:19 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Noam Scheiber speculates that Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) might challenge Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination if even it’s an uphill fight.

“All of which is to say, if Hillary Clinton runs and retains her ties to Wall Street, Warren will be more likely to join the race, not less. Warren is shrewd enough to understand that the future of the Democratic Party is at stake in 2016. At 64, she knows that if Hillary wins and populates yet another administration with heirs to Robert Rubin, it will be at least eight years before there’s another chance to reclaim the party.”

Said one former Warren aide: “Yeah, Hillary is running. And she’ll probably win. But Elizabeth doesn’t care about winning. She doesn’t care whose turn it is.”

White House Seeks GOP Help on Immigration

November 10, 2013 at 9:07 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The White House has reached out to former Bush administration officials for help in jump starting immigration reform in the House, Politico reports.

“In closed-door meetings, they have urged the White House to find a way to reach out to the GOP that doesn’t center on Obama banging the podium telling Speaker John Boehner to bring a bill to the floor. During the Senate debate, Obama mostly stayed out of the limelight, for fear his involvement would end any hope of a bipartisan success. But his staffers were heavily involved behind the scenes.”

Elections Didn’t Settle Internal GOP Fight

November 10, 2013 at 2:35 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The 2013 elections amounted to a nightmare scenario for Republicans who had hoped the results might provide some resolution to their ongoing intraparty squabble,” Chris Cillizza writes.

“The end result is that both sides of the GOP argument live to fight another day, each emboldened by the election in their own way. That ‘next day’ will be in a series of Republican Senate primaries over the first seven months of 2014.”

“The first — and most telling — will be in Kentucky, where Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell faces wealthy businessman Matt Bevin in May… Then come two critical summer primaries: one in Mississippi and one in Georgia.”

Christie Slams Romney Campaign Team

November 10, 2013 at 12:55 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In an interview on ABC News, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) brushed off criticism reported in the new book Double Down from a member of Mitt Romney’s 2012 vice presidential vetting team, saying his advice was not something he should “give a darn about.”

Said Christie: “First off, political advice from people who ran the Romney campaign is probably something nobody should really give a darn about, so let’s start with that.”

He added: “I’ll take Mitt Romney’s interpretation of all this, rather than some,
you know, paid political consultant who was, you know, trying to make
himself famous obviously in the book.”

Quote of the Day

November 10, 2013 at 9:28 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“He needs to stand up in front of the American people and say, you know what? I perpetuated a fraud on you.”

— Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R), in an ABC News interview, saying President Obama’s apology for misleading people about Obamacare wasn’t good enough.

White Candidate Wins By Suggesting He’s Black

November 10, 2013 at 8:55 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Dave Wilson chuckles as he talks about his unorthodox political campaign [for a board seat on the Houston Community College system]… As a conservative white Republican running in a district whose voters are overwhelmingly black Democrats, the odds seemed overwhelmingly against him,” KHOU reports.

“Then he came up with an idea… If a white guy didn’t have a chance in a mostly African-American district, Wilson would lead voters to think he’s black.”

Said Wilson: “Every time a politician talks, he’s out there deceiving voters.”

“And it apparently worked. In one of the biggest political upsets in Houston politics this election season, Wilson — an anti-gay activist and former fringe candidate for mayor — emerged as the surprise winner over 24-year incumbent Bruce Austin. His razor thin margin of victory, only 26 votes, was almost certainly influenced by his racially tinged campaign.”

Christie Plans Ambitious Year

November 10, 2013 at 8:48 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A dominant re-election victory in hand, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) is pursuing a path to bolster his resume as a get-it-done Republican leader and to broaden a national network of political allies,” the AP reports.

“This aggressive course is designed to strengthen his appeal as he considers whether to run for president in 2016… Christie’s advisers suggest he has a one-year window to stack up more accomplishments before lame-duck status — and a prospective White House campaign — interfere.”

Obama’s Secrecy Tent

November 10, 2013 at 8:46 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Even when Mr. Obama travels to allied nations, aides quickly set up the security tent — which has opaque sides and noise-making devices inside — in a room near his hotel suite. When the president needs to read a classified document or have a sensitive conversation, he ducks into the tent to shield himself from secret video cameras and listening devices.”

GOP Now Wants to Fix Obamacare

November 10, 2013 at 8:21 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans have shifted their strategy on Obamacare,” The Hill reports.

“Weeks ago, many Republicans said Obamacare — including Speaker John Boehner (OH) — was too broken to fix. But now, the GOP is drafting legislation that aims to do just that.”

“The GOP wants to rebuild its political capital and public credibility by solving Obamacare’s implementation problems. This pivot comes after Republicans took major hits in polls following the government shutdown.”

GOP Donors Plot Against Amash

November 10, 2013 at 8:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Business leaders are plotting to take down Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) as part of a broader effort to punish lawmakers over the government shutdown,” The Hill reports.

Prominent Michigan donors are requesting financial backing for Amash’s primary challenger, Brian Ellis (R), arguing that Amash “and others have effectively nullified the Republican majority in the U.S. House.”

Illinois Republican Wants to Take On His Party

November 10, 2013 at 8:08 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Rep. Bob Dold (R-IL) “wants to get back to Congress — to take on his own party,” The Hill reports.

“Dold is attempting a comeback against former Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL), who he lost to by less than 2,500 votes in a heavily Democratic suburban Chicago district last fall. The self-described moderate hoping to win his rematch by painting himself as the more bipartisan of the two — and the one more willing to take on members of his conference.”

Obama Struggles to Regain His Credibility

November 9, 2013 at 6:55 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Obama likes to say he will never again be running for office, but every Democrat knows he will be
on the ballot figuratively in 2014, and 2016, as well. Right now they are rightly nervous about that prospect,” Dan Balz reports.

“A president famous for his unflappability, he is now struggling to square assurances that he is on top of the problems confronting his administration with assertions that he was unaware of the problems as they were developing.”

Nuclear Talks with Iran Hit Snag

November 9, 2013 at 6:53 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After several days of optimistic reports that negotiations with Iran were on track to produce the first agreement in a decade to freeze its nuclear program, the talks hit a snag on Saturday with a French objection that the proposed deal did not do enough to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions,” the New York Times reports.

“Even as American diplomats made a final push for an agreement late Saturday, the marathon talks laid bare the challenge of drafting a deal that would satisfy both the Iranians and a group of major powers with their own interests and agendas.”

How the GOP Can Win in 2016

November 9, 2013 at 9:39 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Marc Ambinder: “The ideal Republican strategy is not terribly convoluted. Find and nominate the most acceptable conservative. Find the swing states where demographic composition of the electorate has been volatile and where there is room among those demographic groups to grow the GOP’s share. Put the two together.”

“I would add: If I were Machiavellian, I would urge Republicans to do everything they can to suppress the Democratic vote. I am not Machiavellian, and plenty of Republicans are already doing this.”

White House in Crisis Mode

November 9, 2013 at 9:32 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Obama’s anger, “described by a White House that has repeatedly sought to show that the president was unaware of the extent of the website’s problems, has lit a fire under the West Wing staff,” the New York Times reports.

“Senior aides are racing to make sure the website is fixed by the end of the month as they confront the political fallout from presidential promises, now broken, that all Americans who liked their existing health care plans could keep them… Inside the White House, there is anxiety that if the health care problems are not righted, they could imperil the rest of Mr. Obama’s presidency, especially as criticism grows that the president misled consumers about the plan.”

Michael Tomasky: “The Obamacare website situation is bad–but it’s not a make-or-break moment for this presidency. It’s just another round of the media’s trumped-up crises.”

Sarah Palin Defends Christmas

November 9, 2013 at 8:53 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Amira: “For religious conservatives, howling over the so-called ‘war on Christmas’ has become an annual holiday tradition almost as enjoyable as Christmas itself. On Tuesday, Sarah Palin seeks to capitalize on the phenomenon with the release of her newest book, Good Tidings and Great Joy: Protecting the Heart of Christmas.”

“The book is part tribute to the joys of Christmas, part how-to guide for oppressed Christians looking for ways to fight back against whiny and litigious secularists, and part manifesto on the general superiority of Christianity over atheism. Palin, throughout, appears incapable of fathoming why a business catering to people from all walks of life may prefer to use inclusive holiday-season language in promotional items, or why a non-Christian may not appreciate a government institution expressing a preference for Christianity over other religions.”

Gay Marriage Nears Approval in Hawaii

November 9, 2013 at 8:26 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hawaii’s state House, “turning back furious — if futile — pleas for delay, voted late Friday to grant marriage equality to gay and lesbian couples,” the Honolulu Star Advertiser reports.

“The 30-19 vote sends the bill to the state Senate, which is inclined to agree to the House version Tuesday and transmit the bill to Gov. Neil Abercrombie for his signature.”

New York Times: “Hawaii is poised to be among 16 states to approve gay marriage, along with Illinois and shortly after Minnesota, New Jersey and Rhode Island. But the step in Hawaii has special resonance because the contemporary battle over same-sex marriage was born here two decades ago.”
