Party of Nothing

December 24, 2012 at 7:53 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mark McKinnon says it is becoming clear that the Republican party “is against everything and for nothing.”

“Nothing on taxes. Nothing on gun control. Nothing on climate change. Nothing on gay marriage. Nothing on immigration reform (or an incremental, piece-by-piece approach, which will result in nothing). It’s a very odd situation when the losing party is the party refusing to negotiate. It may be how you disrupt, but it is not how you govern, or how you ever hope to regain a majority.”

“And so, we have a Republican Party today willing to eliminate any prospect for a decent future for anyone, including itself, if it cannot be a future that is 100 percent in accordance with its core beliefs and principles. That’s not governing. That’s just lobbing hand grenades. If you’re only standing on principle to appear taller, then you appear smaller. And the GOP is shrinking daily before our eyes.”

Senator Arrested for Drunk Driving

December 23, 2012 at 11:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Michael Crapo (R-ID) was arrested in Virginia early Sunday morning and charged with driving under the influence, CBS News reports.

An officer was on routine patrol when he saw Sen. Crapo’s vehicle run a red light. Crapo underwent several field sobriety tests, which he failed… He was then taken into custody without incident.

Said Crapo: “I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance. I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter. I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated.”

Politico notes Crapo is Mormon and has said publicly that he abstains from alcohol.

Bonus Quote of the Day

December 23, 2012 at 6:39 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans used to be interested in not running continual rivers of red ink. If that meant raising taxes a little bit, we always raised taxes a little bit. But nowadays taxes are like leprosy and they can’t be used for anything, and so Republicans have denied themselves any bargaining power.”

— Former Rep. William Frenzel (R-MN), quoted by the New York Times.

‘Tis the Season to Denounce Gay Marriage

December 23, 2012 at 6:20 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Pope Benedict used his annual Christmas message to denounce same-sex marriage, saying that it destroyed the “essence of the human creature” and that it was a “manipulation of nature,” the New York Daily News reports.

Said The Pope: “People dispute the idea that they have a nature, given to them by their bodily identity, that serves as a defining element of the human being. They deny their nature and decide that it is not something previously given to them, but that they make it for themselves.”

A Public Religion Research Institute poll finds that 59% of American Catholics favor allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry.

White House Wavers on Hagel for Defense

December 23, 2012 at 6:19 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

National Journal: “Besieged by criticism from right and left, and considerable skepticism from his former Senate colleagues, Chuck Hagel appears to be following the path of Susan Rice as a trial-balloon nominee who finds himself quickly losing altitude in Washington. And as happened with Rice, the White House is now signaling that it may soon puncture Hagel’s hopes.”

President Obama is now “considering candidates other than Hagel for Defense secretary, in particular Michele Flournoy, who was under secretary of Defense for policy in Obama’s first term, and Ashton Carter, the current deputy Defense secretary.”

Just a week ago, Hagel was considered Obama’s first choice.

Memorial Service for Inouye Held in Hawaii

December 23, 2012 at 6:08 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) told an emotional story at a memorial service for the late Sen. Daniel Inouye’s (D-HI) about how he escorted former Sen. Bob Dole (R-KS), Inouye’s longtime friend and a fellow wounded World War II hero, to pay their respects to Inouye at the Capitol Rotunda, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports.

Reid recounted how Dole, who usually uses a wheelchair, insisted on walking up to the casket.

Said Dole: “Danny’s not going to see me in a wheelchair.”

Dole, who lost the use of his right arm in combat, struggled to the casket, but “he got up there and, soldier to soldier, he saluted him with his left hand.”

December 23, 2012 at 3:41 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Emerson College poll in Massachusetts finds Gov. Deval Patrick (D) topping Sen. Scott Brown (R) in a possible U.S. Senate special election match up, 48% to 43%.

However, Brown leads Vicky Kennedy, the widow of former Sen. Ted Kennedy, 46% to 40%.

Son Says Romney Was a Reluctant Candidate

December 23, 2012 at 10:28 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tagg Romney told the Boston Globe that his father, Mitt Romney, only reluctantly ran for president.

Said Romney’s eldest son: “He wanted to be president less than anyone I’ve met in my life. He had no desire to run.”

He added: “If he could have found someone else to take his place… he would have been ecstatic to step aside. He is a very private person who loves his family deeply and wants to be with them, but he has deep faith in God and he loves his country, but he doesn’t love the attention.”

How Republicans Became the Anti-Tax Party

December 23, 2012 at 7:51 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The New York Times notes the last time any Congressional Republican voted for a tax increase was for the budget deal crafted in 1990.

“The conservative revolt against that 1990 legislation — and against President George Bush, who violated his own ‘Read my lips’ vow not to increase taxes — was a seminal moment for Republicans. The party of balanced budgets became the party that opposed tax increases.”

“Republicans continue to embrace the no-new-taxes stand as a centerpiece of the party’s identity, even in the face of public opinion that strongly supports tax increases on high incomes. And some Republicans fear that the party’s commitment to prevent tax increases more and more is coming at the expense of those other, older kinds of fiscal responsibility.”

Why Obama Isn’t Caving

December 23, 2012 at 7:47 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Obama’s “stiffening resolve during the fight over the fiscal cliff can be traced directly to the lessons he drew from his hard-won triumph of the 2012 campaign,” Politico reports.

“He whipped Republicans a second time, parried the best attacks they could muster, and is now demanding that they respect the victory, if not the man who won it. That doesn’t mean Obama won’t eventually compromise, especially with the specter of a renewed recession lingering just over the horizon, but his body language is a lot more combative than the kinder, gentler Obama negotiating style of yore.”

Key point: “After his 2008 win, he talked a lot about bipartisanship. This time he’s determined to squeeze it out of Republicans. He believes he owes that to the people who voted for him.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

December 22, 2012 at 9:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“He’s absolutely unbeatable in the state of California. Not even the Lord could beat him.”

— Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, quoted by Politico, on the political comeback of Gov. Jerry Brown (D).

Kennedy Considers Bid in Massachusetts

December 22, 2012 at 6:08 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) confirmed to the AP that his brother, Ted Kennedy Jr., is considering running for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts if Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) is confirmed as the next secretary of state.

While Kennedy now lives in Connecticut, he’s felt obligated to contemplate running in
Massachusetts, where the Kennedy name is revered.

Quote of the Day

“Nothing brings two people closer together than weeks of debate prep. John, I’m
looking forward to working with you instead of debating you.”

— President Obama, quoted by the New York Times, nominating Sen. John Kerry, who played Mitt Romney in mock debates during the 2012 presidential campaign, for Secretary of State.

Two Republican Debacles in 12 Hours

December 22, 2012 at 4:03 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

John Dickerson notes Republicans had two major setbacks in rapid succession: Speaker John Boehner’s failed “Plan B” to avert the fiscal cliff and the NRA’s embarrassing press conference.

“The Republican Party is in a rebuilding mode after its 2012 election loss. These two events–a defiant NRA and an incompetent leadership–cannot be the face of confrontation the GOP wants to show the public on high-profile issues. Tea Party activists and gun owners are a key part of the party base. But these public acts are out of sync with the moment and completely at odds with party’s need to widen its membership.”

Plan Uncovered to Topple Boehner

December 22, 2012 at 1:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Several conservative House Republican members are contemplating a plan to unseat Speaker John Boehner from his position on January 3,” Breitbart News reports.

“Staffers have compiled a detailed action plan that, if executed, could make this a reality… Dissatisfaction with Boehner is growing in the House Republican conference, but until now there hasn’t been a clear path forward.”

How the Fiscal Cliff Talks Stalled

December 22, 2012 at 9:33 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Wall Street Journal has a great behind-the-scenes look at how the fiscal cliff negotiations faltered.

“Mr. Obama repeatedly lost patience with the speaker as negotiations faltered. In an Oval Office meeting last week, he told Mr. Boehner that if the sides didn’t reach agreement, he would use his inaugural address and his State of the Union speech to tell the country the Republicans were at fault.”

At one point, Boehner told the president, “I put $800 billion [in tax revenue] on the table. What do I get for that?”

Replied Obama: “You get nothing. I get that for free.”
