Harris Borrowing from the ‘Republican Playbook’

October 8, 2024 at 12:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

GOP strategist Frank Luntz told CNBC that Kamala Harris is embracing some of the Republican Party’s old standbys as her own as she gains ground on Donald Trump.

He noted Harris “is taking pages out of the Republican playbook” and credited her “important use of language,” pointing to her focus on small business issues and describing herself as a capitalist.

He also noted her emphasis on freedom during the Democratic convention.

Said Luntz: “If you just listen to these general statements, she actually sounds like a moderate Republican. So the challenge for the Trump campaign is to just stop with these incessant character attacks, and challenge her on the specific issues and her claims.”

Just published: Countdown 1960: The Behind-the-Scenes Story of the 312 Days that Changed America’s Politics Forever by Chris Wallace.

“The election of 1960 holds stunning parallels to our current political climate. There were—potentially valid—claims of voter fraud and a stolen election. There was also a presidential candidate faced with the decision of whether to contest the result or honor the peaceful transfer of power.”

— Chris Wallace, explaining to Mediaite why he left Fox News after nearly two decades.

“A former New York City official was charged Tuesday with witness tampering and destroying evidence in connection with a federal investigation that led to Mayor Eric Adams’ bribery indictment,” the AP reports.

“Federal prosecutors allege that Mohamed Bahi, who resigned Monday as a community affairs liaison in Adams’ administration, told a businessman and campaign donors to lie to the FBI in June and deleted an encrypted messaging app from his cell phone in July as FBI agents were executing a search warrant at his home.”

Election Spending Projected to Hit $16 Billion

October 8, 2024 at 10:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“This year’s spending to elect a president and members of Congress will hit at least $15.9 billion – putting 2024 on track to become the nation’s most expensive federal election,” CNN reports.

“Helping to drive up the price tag: blistering spending by outside groups, including deep-pocketed super PACs aiding Republicans. Outside spending – largely through independent expenditures such as advertising, mailings, canvassing and other activities to boost specific candidates – has reached roughly $2.6 billion. That’s nearly $1 billion more than groups like these spent at this point in the 2020 election.”

Trump Secretly Stayed in Touch With Putin

October 8, 2024 at 10:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump has secretly spoken with President Vladimir Putin of Russia as many as seven times since leaving office, even as he was pressuring Republicans to block military aid to Ukraine to fight Russian invaders, according to a new book by the journalist Bob Woodward,” the New York Times reports.

“The book, titled War and scheduled to be published next week, describes a scene in early 2024 at Mar-a-Lago, Mr. Trump’s estate in Florida, when the former president ordered an aide out of his office so he could conduct a phone call with Mr. Putin.”

“The unidentified aide said the two may have spoken a half-dozen other times as well since Mr. Trump left the White House.”

Red States Get Redder, Blue States Get Bluer

October 8, 2024 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A USA Today analysis of the nation’s 3,113 counties shows “a striking realignment since 2012 that has intensified the partisan leanings in states across the country, leaving only a handful where the outcome of the Nov. 5 presidential election remains in doubt.”

“The hardening of the country’s political lines has contributed to other consequences, too, including one-party control of the governorship and state legislature in 40 of the 50 states. That has led to a patchwork of sharply divergent laws across the country − even between neighboring states − on abortion rights, transgender care, the public-health response to the pandemic and other controversial issues.”

Trump Secretly Sent Covid Tests to Putin

October 8, 2024 at 9:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As the coronavirus tore through the world in 2020, and the United States and other countries confronted a shortage of tests designed to detect the illness, then-President Donald Trump secretly sent coveted tests to Russian President Vladimir Putin for his personal use,” the Washington Post reports.

“Putin, petrified of the virus, accepted the supplies but took pains to prevent political fallout — not for him, but for his American counterpart. He cautioned Trump not to reveal that he had dispatched the scarce medical equipment to Moscow, according to a new book by Washington Post associate editor Bob Woodward.”

Putin, according to the book, told Trump: “I don’t want you to tell anybody because people will get mad at you, not me.”

Quote of the Day

October 8, 2024 at 8:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“That son of a bitch, Bibi Netanyahu, he’s a bad guy. He’s a bad fucking guy!”

— President Biden, quoted by CNN in Bob Woodward’s new book, War.

More Reveals from Bob Woodward’s New Book

October 8, 2024 at 8:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN has some more tidbits from Bob Woodward’s new book, War:

  • Woodward writes that Biden’s national security team at one point believed there was a real threat, a 50% chance, that Putin would use nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
  • Biden said he “should never have picked” Attorney General Merrick Garland during a conversation over his son’s legal troubles.
  • Biden criticized former President Barack Obama’s handling of Putin’s invasion of Crimea in 2014, concluding that “Barack never took Putin seriously.”
  • Citing a Trump aide, Woodward reports that there have been “maybe as many as seven” calls between Trump and Putin since Trump left the White House in 2021.

A Really Close Race

October 8, 2024 at 8:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Silver: “I’ve never seen an election in which the forecast spent more time in the vicinity of 50/50, and I probably never will…”

“On average, since our forecast relaunch on July 30, Harris has won 49.4 percent of simulations, and Trump has won 50.2 percent. (These don’t quite add up to 100 because of the slim possibility of a 269-269 Electoral College tie.) People understand intuitively that a 50/50 or 49/51 forecast is a toss-up.”

“If the forecast is 55/45 in some direction instead, however, confusion can abound — even though this isn’t any different from 50/50 for most practical purposes. Some of the problem is that people can confuse this forecast for a prediction of vote share: if Harris were to win 55 percent of the vote and Trump 45 percent, that would be the biggest landslide in an American election since Ronald Reagan in 1984. But that’s not what this forecast is saying. Rather, it’s that Harris will win the Electoral College about 11 times out of 20 and Trump will win it 9 times out of 20: still basically a toss-up, just with the coin weighted ever so slightly in Harris’s favor.”
