Trump Escalates Attacks on Harris

September 29, 2024 at 5:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump escalated his personal attacks on his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, on Sunday by repeating an insult that she was ‘mentally impaired’ while also saying she should be ‘impeached and prosecuted,’” the AP reports.

“With just over a month until the election, Trump is intensifying his use of personal and offensive attacks, even as some Republicans say he’d be better sticking to the issues.”

USA Today: Donald Trump falsely calls Kamala Harris, Joe Biden “mentally impaired” again, ramping up attacks.

Quote of the Day

September 29, 2024 at 4:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I’m here because they cheat… they cheat in this state and I’ll mention a couple of the areas. Philadelphia is out of control. Detroit is out of control. Atlanta is out of control.”

— Donald Trump, at a rally in Pennsylvania.

A Little Better Than a Toss Up

September 29, 2024 at 2:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Silver’s latest forecast gives Kamala Harris a 56% chance to win the presidential election.

“I’ll grant you that a 56/44 forecast is in kind of a weird, uncomfortable zone. To be clear, the forecast is that Harris will win the Electoral College 56 percent of the time — not that she’ll beat Trump by 12 points — in other words that the race is basically a toss-up. There is a strong likelihood that this will be a close election right up through Election Day.”

“Still, 56 percent is meaningfully different from 50 percent. Even a somewhat nitty (i.e. risk-averse) poker player would usually take an all-in spot where they win 56 percent of the time. A baseball team that wins 56 percent of its games goes 91-71, and that’s considered a strong season. So zooming out, you’d probably take this position if you were Kamala Harris.”

Making Sense of the Charges Against Eric Adams

September 29, 2024 at 12:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “It is in some ways a straightforward case that draws on what appears to be solid evidence.”

“But it also contains potential pitfalls that make it seem likely that the prosecutors will seek to bring additional charges in the weeks or months to come.”

Vice Presidential Debates Are Mostly Irrelevant

September 29, 2024 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“There is no end of put-downs that attach to the job of vice president, a position that’s widely treated as irrelevant when its occupant is not ignored altogether,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“So it’s hardly surprising the modern history of vice presidential debates is notably lacking in both gravity and moments of true political significance. In fact, since the first match-up of presidential understudies nearly 50 years ago, precisely zero have made a shred of difference in the race for the White House.”

Wealthy GOP Candidates Face Rough Homecomings

September 29, 2024 at 10:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “The GOP often embraces wealthy candidates without a long record in state politics because they can pump in their own cash, helping the party close Democrats’ typical fundraising and ad-buying advantages.”

“But such a profile carries risks. In Pennsylvania, Montana and Wisconsin—three of the seven most competitive Senate races—Republicans have had to grapple with the ‘carpetbagger’ label that Democrats are applying, knowing the power of the attack for voters who are rooted firmly in their states.”

Trial Could Doom Le Pen’s Presidential Ambitions

September 29, 2024 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Polls suggest French far-right leader Marine Le Pen is closer than ever to winning the presidency. But a trial that begins Monday could upend her political future,” Politico reports.

“Le Pen, her National Rally party, and 26 other individuals — including current and former French lawmakers and MEPs are accused of embezzling European Parliament funds through what prosecutors called a ‘system”’to award contracts for parliamentary assistants to individuals who mostly worked on party operations rather than European Union affairs in violation of EU rules. The alleged scheme took place between 2004 and 2016.”

Polling Firm Secretly Worked with Trump Team

Rasmussen Reports, which claims to be a nonpartisan polling firm, is reportedly giving Donald Trump’s campaign previews of its results before the public sees them, the New Republic reports.

J.D. Vance’s Thin Skin Makes Him Vulnerable

September 29, 2024 at 9:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Frum: “Kamala Harris used Donald Trump’s psychic weaknesses against him in their televised debate on September 10. Can Governor Tim Walz do the same to Senator J. D. Vance when they meet on Tuesday?”

“Watch what happens when Vance is asked an unexpected question by a friendly Fox News reporter: ‘What makes you smile?’ Vance responds with ill temper and defensiveness: ‘I smile at a lot of things, including bogus questions from the media, man.’ That insult is followed by an unpleasant laugh.”

“It has been said that the Trump-Vance ticket is the angriest in recent history. But Vance doesn’t rage and roar onstage the way Trump does. Instead, he seethes with petty peevishness. His disdain for women who deviate from his script for their life is barely disguised, or not disguised at all. It’s an unattractive look. Walz’s job is to provoke Vance into showing that ugly side to a huge national audience. How to do it?”

Harris Loses Ground with Latino Voters

September 29, 2024 at 9:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Vice President Kamala Harris is leading former President Donald Trump among Latino voters. But that advantage has declined to Democrats’ lowest level in the past four presidential cycles,” according to a new national NBC News/Telemundo/CNBC poll.

“Overall, the poll shows that Democratic presidential candidate Harris has lost some ground with Latinos at a time when these consequential voters are more likely than the general electorate to cite the economy and the rising cost of living as top priorities. On both of these issues, Latino voters give Trump the advantage, but a majority of them prefer Harris on temperament, competency and having the necessary mental and physical health to be president.”

“Support for Harris is at 54% among registered Latino voters, according to the poll, while Trump gets 40% and another 6% say they’re unsure or wouldn’t vote.”

Maya Rudolph Returns to Play Kamala Harris

September 29, 2024 at 8:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Saturday Night Live dug deep into its contact list of celebrity alumni and friends in the comedy world as it kicked off its 50th season with an opening sketch that featured Maya Rudolph’s anticipated return as Vice President Kamala Harris,” the New York Times reports.

Jeff Flake Endorses Kamala Harris

September 29, 2024 at 8:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) “is endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris because of his conservative values — not in spite of them — he said Saturday in an interview announcing his support for the Democratic presidential nominee,” the Arizona Republic reports.

Said Flake: “First and foremost, I want to support a presidential candidate that respects the rule of law, somebody who, if they lose an election, wouldn’t try to use the presidential powers to overturn that election.”

Harris Doing Well with Older Voters

September 29, 2024 at 8:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Kamala Harris may be the first Democrat to carry voters aged 65 and older since Al Gore in 2000, CNN reports.

Austrian Election Offers Far Right Springboard Back to Power

September 29, 2024 at 8:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It’s Europe’s most important election this year, yet amid 2024’s flurry of other ‘most important elections’ — such as the nail-biting race in France — chances are you haven’t heard about it,” Politico reports.

“On Sunday, Austrians go to the polls in a do-or-die ballot that could vault the country’s neofascist Freedom Party, founded in the 1950s by former SS officers, into power.”

Trump Says Harris Would Turn U.S. Into ‘Third World Hellhole’

September 29, 2024 at 7:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump ratcheted up his hardline rhetoric on immigration on Saturday, accusing Kamala Harris and the Biden administration of welcoming criminals into the country and warning that without mass deportations, the U.S. will lose its ‘culture,’” Politico reports.

Said Trump: “You gotta get these people back where they came from. You have no choice. You’re going to lose your culture, you’re going to lose your country, you’re going to have crime the likes of which nobody has ever seen before.”

“The speech served as a direct response to Harris’ more aggressive posture on the border — and an amplification of an issue that has long animated Trump’s base. In a close election with Harris, polls suggest immigration is a strong point for him.”

Axios: Trump pounds immigration message after Harris’ border visit.

Both Parties Want Your Vote ASAP

September 29, 2024 at 7:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The first wave of presidential ballots is in the mail, and Republican and Democratic officials alike have a plea for voters: Don’t wait for Election Day,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Campaigns are hoping to lock in commitments from their most-likely voters early to focus resources on the less enthusiastic. They are urging Americans to avoid the risk that they will be blocked by Election Day crises: bad weather, viruses, power outages, computer crashes or flat tires.”

Harris Team Quietly Courts GOP Endorsements

September 29, 2024 at 7:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “As Trump makes his third run for the White House, the Harris campaign has ramped up its outreach to Republicans — from the rank and file to some of the party’s most recognizable figures — in an effort to win votes and bolster its message that Trump represents a unique danger to American democracy.”

Americans Heard More About Trump Last Week

September 29, 2024 at 7:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Over the past week, Americans were more likely to hear news about former President Donald Trump than about Vice President Kamala Harris, according to The Breakthrough, a CNN polling project that tracks what average Americans are actually hearing, reading and seeing about the presidential candidates throughout the campaign,” CNN reports.
