Vance Deleted Post That Slammed GOP on Immigration

September 17, 2024 at 3:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A week after President Barack Obama won reelection in November 2012, JD Vance, then a law student at Yale, wrote a scathing rebuke of the Republican Party’s stance on migrants and minorities, criticizing it for being ‘openly hostile to non-whites’ and for alienating ‘Blacks, Latinos, and the youth,'” CNN reports.

“Four years later, as Vance considered a career in GOP politics, he asked a former college professor to delete the article. That professor, Brad Nelson, taught Vance at Ohio State University while Vance was an undergraduate student.”

“Nelson told CNN that during the 2016 Republican primary he agreed to delete the article at Vance’s request, so that Vance might have an easier time getting a job in Republican politics.”

Trump Told He Needs More Security to Play Golf

September 17, 2024 at 3:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Trump Is No Gerald Ford

September 17, 2024 at 3:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tom Nichols: “Two assassination attempts in about two months is indeed horrifying, but it is not unprecedented: In 1975, President Gerald Ford survived two such attempts in fewer than three weeks. One assailant was a woman from West Virginia named Sara Jane Moore. The other was an acolyte of the murderer Charles Manson, Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme. Both of them came within feet of killing Ford.”

“Ford was a decent man and an underrated president, and he certainly had enemies, especially after pardoning Richard Nixon…”

“But he did not blame his opponents for the attempts on his life. He did not blame America, or the courts, or anyone else. He also did not use the attacks by Moore and Fromme to fundraise: Trump used his attacks to beat the bushes for money within a few hours. Instead, Ford acceded to the Secret Service’s request that he start wearing a trench coat with a zip-in Kevlar vest. (It was very uncomfortable and he disliked wearing it.) He then went back out in public and conducted a presidential campaign, which he lost.”

New Details Emerge from Trump Family Crypto Launch

September 17, 2024 at 2:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than two hours into Republican former President Donald Trump’s World Liberty Financial launch event on X Monday night, the team behind the Trump family’s new crypto project finally unveiled a key detail: Who can buy the forthcoming tokens it plans to release, and how shares of the project will be allotted,” CNBC reports.

“For over a month, the former president and his family have been pumping up the endeavor with vague descriptions, promising that it will do many things at once.”

“Lofty goals set by those involved in the project on Monday night’s X space suggest that World Liberty Financial will be a sort of crypto banking platform, where the general public will be encouraged to borrow, lend and invest in crypto.”

Aileen Cannon Failed to Disclose Right-Wing Junket

September 17, 2024 at 1:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Federal Judge Aileen M. Cannon, the controversial jurist who tossed out the classified documents criminal case against Donald Trump in July, failed to disclose her attendance at a May 2023 banquet funded by a conservative law school,” ProPublica reports.

Harris Will Meet the Press (on Her Terms)

September 17, 2024 at 1:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “During her 2020 campaign and early in her vice presidency, some of Ms. Harris’s biggest missteps came during unscripted encounters with journalists. To avoid taking chances, she has granted only six interviews in the 58 days since President Biden withdrew from the race, three with friendly radio hosts. Even the press-averse Mr. Biden took more questions in the final two months of his campaign than Ms. Harris has in what is nearly the first two months of hers.”

“Her team says this is about to change, promising a series of appearances across an array of media venues, including local and national outlets, podcasts, radio stations and daytime talk shows.”

$500 Million in TV and Radio Ads Is Coming

September 17, 2024 at 1:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The presidential candidates and their allies plan to spend more than half a billion dollars on television and radio advertising over the final seven weeks of the campaign,” the New York Times reports.

“Groups backing Vice President Kamala Harris have reserved $332 million worth of airtime for television and radio ads — 63% of the total — while just about $194 million will come from groups backing former President Donald Trump.”

“The ad wars are the consequence of the fund-raising wars: Democrats have significantly out-raised Republicans in the months after Ms. Harris succeeded President Biden as the head of the Democratic ticket, and Ms. Harris has more money to spend on paid media.”

September 17, 2024 at 1:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Emerson College poll in Missouri finds 58% of voters plan to vote in favor of the ballot measure to amend the Missouri Constitution to provide the right to reproductive freedom, while 30% plan to vote against it.

Trump, Outrage and Political Violence

September 17, 2024 at 1:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Peter Baker reminds us:

“Trump has long favored the language of violence in his political discourse, encouraging supporters to beat up hecklers, threatening to shoot looters and undocumented migrants, mocking a near-fatal attack on the husband of the Democratic House speaker and suggesting that a general he deemed disloyal be executed.”

“While Mr. Trump insists his fiery speech to supporters on Jan. 6, 2021, was not responsible for the subsequent ransacking of the Capitol, he resisted pleas from advisers and his own daughter that day to do more to stop the assault. He even suggested that the mob might be right to want to hang his vice president and has since embraced the attackers as patriots whom he may pardon if elected again.”

Trump Tries to Regain Spotlight

September 17, 2024 at 12:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump is poised to capitalize on the second attempt on his life in recent months, using the shocking development to try to snatch back the political momentum that Vice President Kamala Harris has enjoyed,” Bloomberg reports.

“By portraying Trump as a fighter and survivor, his campaign hopes to capture Americans’ fractured attention and lay the blame for yet another assassination attempt on Harris and Democrats.”

New Push to Block Longtime Arizona Residents from Voting

September 17, 2024 at 12:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A key election official in Arizona’s Maricopa County plans to ask the state’s highest court as early as Tuesday to prohibit nearly 100,000 longtime residents from voting in state and local races this fall after discovering the state has no record of asking them for documents proving their citizenship,” the Washington Post reports.

Exploding Pagers Injure Hundreds of Hezbollah Members

September 17, 2024 at 12:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Pagers carried by thousands of Hezbollah operatives exploded at about the same time Tuesday afternoon, leaving more than 2,700 injured and eight dead in an unprecedented event that struck across Lebanon,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The affected pagers were from a new shipment that the group received in recent days.”

Washington Post: “The apparent attack came as tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have soared on the Lebanese border following months of tit-for-tat strikes that have displaced tens of thousands of people in both countries.”

Palm Beach Asks for Help to Protect Trump

September 17, 2024 at 12:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Palm Beach, one of the richest American enclaves, is seeking government assistance after the cost to protect its most famous resident — former President Donald Trump — soared to $93,000 a day,” Bloomberg reports.

“The local sheriff’s office was forced to ramp up spending on Trump’s security detail after an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania two months ago. Now a second attempt, this time at a golf course near Trump’s home in Florida, has renewed calls to boost it even further.”

What the Polls Say Outside of the Swing States

September 17, 2024 at 11:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball: “Polling in states that are somewhat competitive for president but outside the group of 7 that is likely to decide this election generally reflect what happened in 2020, although Donald Trump is usually performing slightly better than the actual 2020 results in those states, much like the polling in the key battlegrounds that we covered last week.”

$50 Billion in Aid to Ukraine Stalls

September 17, 2024 at 11:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A long-awaited plan to help Ukraine rebuild using Russian money is in limbo as the United States and Europe struggle to agree on how to construct a $50 billion loan using Russia’s frozen central bank assets while complying with their own laws,” the New York Times reports.

September 17, 2024 at 11:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wisconsin U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde (R) “has quietly replaced key parts of his campaign in recent months as he continues to trail Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D) in the polls,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

“Over the last three months, the multimillionaire banking mogul has parted ways with his fundraising and media consultants and the top member of his communications team.”

Joe Rogan Says Harris Was Much Better Prepared

September 17, 2024 at 11:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Joe Rogan praised Kamala Harris on his podcast saying she was much better prepared for the debate than Donald Trump.

Said Rogan: “I just wanna say, whoever’s helping her, whoever’s coaching her, whoever’s the puppet master running the strings, you did an amazing job.”

He added: “The difference in that debate was not a difference in who’s gonna have better policies? Who’s gonna be better for the country? The difference in the debate, in my opinion, was who was better prepared. She was way better prepared… Even when it came to answering tough questions, instead of answering, she would just say things that she believed and they sounded real good, and that’s the sound bite.”
