Senate Votes That Climate Change is Real

January 21, 2015 at 5:24 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 40 Comments

The U.S. Senate voted 98-1 in favor of a an amendment stating that “climate change is real and is not a hoax,” The Hill reports.

“The provision offered by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) to put Republicans on record about climate change ahead of the 2016 election passed with near unanimous support, with only Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS), the chairman of the campaign committee for Senate Republicans, voting no. In a surprise, one of the Senate’s staunchest climate change skeptics, Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), voted in favor of the amendment.”

Stockman Seeks to Brand Climate Change Denial

November 25, 2014 at 2:08 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 28 Comments

In his last days in office, Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) “appears to be trying to cement his legacy by naming a scientific theory charging climate change is natural after himself,” National Journal reports.

“Stockman, who did not seek re-election this year, introduced a bill last week to ‘study the effect of the Earth’s magnetic field on the weather.’ The bill doesn’t explicitly mention global warming, but would put Congress on record as saying that a ‘decrease in magnetic fields could impact global temperatures’ and instructs the director of the National Science Foundation to commission a study on the impact a shift in the Earth’s magnetic field could have on the weather. That bill’s name? The ‘Stockman Effect Act.'”

“Here’s the thing: the ‘Stockman Effect’ isn’t the name of the theory the Congressman is proposing to study. Scientists contacted by National Journal said they weren’t aware of a ‘Stockman Effect’ related to geophysics or climate change.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

November 18, 2014 at 11:13 am EST By Taegan Goddard 13 Comments

“I think there will be a political problem for the Republican Party going into 2016 if we don’t define what we are for on the environment. I don’t know what the environmental policy of the Republican Party is.”

— Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), quoted by Roll Call.

Obama May Set Climate Change as 2016 Campaign Theme

November 13, 2014 at 5:19 am EST By Taegan Goddard 5 Comments

“President Obama’s landmark agreement with China to cut greenhouse gas pollution is a bet by the president and Democrats that on the issue of climate change, American voters are far ahead of Washington’s warring factions and that the environment will be a winning cause in the 2016 presidential campaign,” the New York Times reports.

“A variety of polls show that a majority of American voters now believe that climate change is occurring, are worried about it, and support candidates who back policies to stop it… But Republicans are betting that despite the polls, they can make the case that regulations to cut greenhouse pollution will result in the loss of jobs and hurt the economy.”
