Trump Causes GOP a Problem in New Hampshire

November 19, 2015 at 3:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 32 Comments

Nate Cohn: “The weakness of mainstream candidates in New Hampshire poses a big challenge for the party’s beleaguered establishment. If a candidate acceptable to the party can’t win New Hampshire or Iowa, the G.O.P. will face a bleak choice: undertake the daunting and expensive task of mounting a come-from-behind effort, or grudgingly acquiesce to a candidate it really doesn’t want, like Ted Cruz, but who may be better than someone it can never accept, like Mr. Trump.”

“The extent of the weakness of the establishment in New Hampshire is a striking departure from recent contests.”

Trump Steps Up Rhetoric on Muslims

November 19, 2015 at 11:11 am EST By Taegan Goddard 163 Comments

Donald Trump told Yahoo News that he would increase surveillance of Muslims and consider a series of drastic measures to keep Americans safe.

Said Trump: “We’re going to have to do things that we never did before. And some people are going to be upset about it, but I think that now everybody is feeling that security is going to rule. And certain things will be done that we never thought would happen in this country in terms of information and learning about the enemy. And so we’re going to have to do certain things that were frankly unthinkable a year ago.”

He wouldn’t rule out requiring Muslims to carry a form of special identification: “We’re going to have to — we’re going to have to look at a lot of things very closely. We’re going to have to look at the mosques. We’re going to have to look very, very carefully.”

Trump Explains Why His Rivals Falter

November 19, 2015 at 10:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard 13 Comments

Donald Trump told Yahoo News that some of his GOP rivals who are not performing as well simply have the wrong mindset.

Said Trump: “A lot of people don’t like to win. They actually don’t know how to win and they don’t like to win because down deep inside they don’t want to win. It’s a deep, deep secret, but they don’t want to win and they don’t think they should be there. And we have some people that are very good and we have some people that shouldn’t be wasting a lot of time, including their own time.”

Trump Says Sanders Is a Communist

November 19, 2015 at 9:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard 49 Comments

Donald Trump told Yahoo News that Sen. Bernie Sanders, who describes himself as a “democratic socialist,” isn’t really a Democrat at all.

Said Trump: “I think he’s a communist. I think he’s actually a communist with a socialistic bent. Anybody that would say that the Paris attacks were caused by global warming, there’s something missing. Even the most ardent global-warming believers aren’t buying that one.”

Trump Rises After Paris Attacks

November 19, 2015 at 7:04 am EST By Taegan Goddard 78 Comments

“Donald Trump has gained political strength since the Paris terrorist attacks last Friday, according to most of the polls released in the aftermath,” The Hill reports.

“Trump’s gains show him once again confounding Beltway wisdom, where the widespread view was that such a grave event would lead voters to look toward White House candidates who are purportedly more mature and sophisticated than the erstwhile star of The Apprentice. Instead, it seems that Republican voters have found themselves drawn to Trump’s emphatic rhetoric.

Trump Repeats Call to Possibly Shut Down Mosques

November 16, 2015 at 7:08 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 98 Comments

Donald Trump “issued another call for more scrutiny of mosques in the United States as fresh fears of terrorism, spurred by the attacks in Paris, dominated the presidential campaign conversation on Monday,” the New York Times reports.

Trump said last month that he would be open to shutting down mosques and he reiterated that the idea should be studied: “I would hate it do it but it’s something that you’re going to have to strongly consider because some of the ideas and some of the hatred, the absolute hatred, is coming from these areas.”

Trump Says Gun Control Enabled Paris Attacks

November 16, 2015 at 9:13 am EST By Taegan Goddard 37 Comments

Donald Trump said the ISIS terrorist attack in Paris might not have happened if French laws allowed for more people to carry guns, Bloomberg reports.

Said Trump: “The toughest gun laws in the world: Paris. If they were allowed to carry — it would have been a much, much different situation.”

Politico: “After being relatively quiet over the weekend, Trump hit the talk shows on Monday morning to speak about the attacks, saying the U.S. needs stronger intelligence and also linking the high death toll to what he views as excessive gun controls.”

GOP Race Takes a Nasty Turn

November 14, 2015 at 12:54 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 32 Comments

“Two escalating rivalries at the heart of the Republican presidential contest took a nasty turn this week, crystallizing divisions among the top four candidates in what has so far been a murky race,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Donald Trump “raised the stakes in his contest with retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson by uncorking a battery of personal insults at the one Republican who continues to challenge him for the top spot in most national polls. The escalation of their feud coincides with an acrimonious back-and-forth between Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Marco Rubio over the latter’s support for a Senate-passed immigration overhaul that would have established a pathway to citizenship for immigrants in the country illegally.”

Washington Post: “Trump — after weeks of bristling at rising challengers — has again seized center stage in the chaotic Republican nomination race, unleashing a torrent of personal and sometimes profane attacks that forced his rivals to respond and underscored his continued dominance.”

Trump Vents in 95-Minute Rant

November 13, 2015 at 7:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard 50 Comments

“For an hour and 35 minutes, Republican front-runner Donald Trump vented about everything that’s wrong with this country and this election,” the Washington Post reports.

“Gone was the candidate’s recent bout of composure and control on the campaign trail. As Trump ranted on and on, campaign staffers with microphones who were supposed to take questions from the audience instead took a seat, trying to cheer their boss here and there. The audience laughed at times and clapped for many of Trump’s sharp insults. But an hour and 20 minutes into the speech, people who were standing on risers on the stage behind Trump sat down. The applause came less often and less loud. As Trump skewered Carson in deeply personal language, a sense of discomfort settled on the crowd of roughly 1,500. Several people shook their heads or whispered to their neighbors.”

Rick Klein: “Donald Trump knows better than most, if not all, the value of performance art in the act of running for president. Which is just one of many reasons that Trump’s Thursday night rant, aimed at all of his rivals and particularly Dr. Ben Carson, was memorable and remarkable. Trump has lamented his situation – that people expect him to say something new, and maybe outrageous, every time he goes out there. There’s no teleprompter technology yet known that would dictate the pantomime-stabbing, much less the incredulous facial expressions and the invitation for someone to get on the stage and try stabbing him. The Trump-Carson feud, now fully engaged, could get bloody, maybe even literally – good news for the dozen or so candidates now fighting for only the half of the GOP electorate available to them.”

Trump Says Rubio Favors Amnesty Because He’s Hispanic

November 12, 2015 at 8:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 30 Comments

Donald Trump told CNN that Marco Rubio favors “amnesty” for undocumented immigrants because the Florida senator and his parents are Hispanic.

Said Trump: “That’s why he wants amnesty.”

He added: “He was always in favor of amnesty, he was always in favor of letting people pour into the country, then what happened is, when people found that out, he sank like a rock in the water.”
