Trump Strongly Suggests He’ll Run

June 9, 2015 at 7:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 35 Comments

Donald Trump “all but confirmed he’ll run for the Republican presidential nomination” during a visit to North Carolina, the Raleigh News & Observer reports.

Trump says he’ll make his formal announcement on June 16: “I think a lot of people are going to be very happy… They’re tired of watching America go down. … It’s about making America great again. I can do it, and nobody else can do it.”

He made a point of using the phrase “if I run” in his speech but voiced frustration with a disclaimer: “June 16, will you come, please, fast – I’m so tired of saying that.”

Trump Looks Likely to Join Race

May 28, 2015 at 2:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 53 Comments

Donald Trump will make a “major announcement” at the Trump Tower in New York City on June 16, and he plans to return to New Hampshire the following day, WMUR reports.

“All signs point to a Trump declaration of candidacy, however. He has been moving in that direction for many months with steps beyond those he took in his previous flirtations.”

“Trump has set up a pre-campaign organization, headed by conservative strategist Corey Lewandowski of Windham, and has hired staffers in New Hampshire and first-caucus state Iowa, as well as in South Carolina, where the first primary in the South will be held. Last week, Trump unveiled a 17-member leadership team in New Hampshire.”

“I have the biggest crowds, I get the biggest standing ovations, and then I read these sleaze-bag reporters. And they say, ‘Donald Trump had a smattering of applause.’ A smattering – and they’ll say about some guy that’s a loser politician that’s up and nobody’s even watching him, ‘He gave a brilliant speech!’ They’re very dishonest.”

Trumps Says He’ll Build Massive Wall on Mexican Border

April 28, 2015 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 61 Comments

Donald Trump, at a campaign event in New Hampshire, touted his building expertise to show how he’ll tackle border security and immigration reform, the Washington Post reports.

Said Trump: “I will build the best wall, the biggest, the strongest, not penetrable, they won’t be crawling over it, like giving it a little jump and they’re over the wall, it costs us trillions. And I’ll have Mexico pay for the wall. Because Mexico is screwing us so badly. I will take it from out of just a small fraction of the money they’ve been screwing us for over the last number of years.”

“We have a woman running who got fired from a company; now she’s running for president. She got fired from a company in a vicious manner. They eventually walked her out. And she also lost an election, not by a little bit, by a landslide. I won’t use names. Now I turn on the television, and she’s running for president. I don’t know.”

Trump Raises Birther Charge Against Cruz

March 24, 2015 at 4:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 87 Comments

Donald Trump told Fox News he doubts Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) can legally run for president because he was born in Canada.

Said Trump: “It’s a hurdle; somebody could certainly look at it very seriously. He was born in Canada. If you know and when we all studied our history lessons, you are supposed to be born in this country, so I just don’t know how the courts will rule on this.”

The Hill reports Cruz said he is still a natural born citizen by birth because his mother was American.

Donald Trump “will launch a presidential exploratory committee Wednesday, the eve of the business mogul’s return to New Hampshire,” the New Hampshire Union Leader reports.

“Trump has flirted with running for President before, but his moves ahead of 2016 are far more concrete. He has a team of political advisers based in New York and he has hired staff in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.”

Trump Insists He’s Serious This Time

February 25, 2015 at 3:31 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 64 Comments

Donald Trump, “who has long toyed with presidential ambitions, said Wednesday he is serious about pursuing a run for the White House — moving ahead with a spate of political hires and delaying his television commitments for 2016,” the Washington Post reports.

“In recent days, Trump has enlisted several strategists to advise him in three key states, retained an attorney to help him navigate federal election law and alerted GOP officials about his desire to seek the Republican nomination. Trump said he has also declined to sign on for another season with the entertainment division of NBC, where he hosts Celebrity Apprentice, because of his political projects.”

Said Trump: “NBC has said they want to renew. But I can’t do it right now because I may be doing something else.”

One More Reason Trump Isn’t Running for President

February 18, 2015 at 2:46 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 24 Comments

Donald Trump announced his television show “Celebrity Apprentice” had been renewed for a 15th season, The Wrap reports.

The show would likely run during the middle of the Republican presidential primaries in early 2016. Four years ago, Trump said he would not run for president because he had committed to the show.

Why Donald Trump Still Gets Headlines

February 10, 2015 at 6:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard 17 Comments

Bloomberg: “One simple reason that media organizations cover Trump is that stories about him generate Internet traffic. In part, that’s because Trump is the star of a successful reality television show. But the casino magnate has also built up an impressive 1.65 million Facebook friends and another 2.7 million Twitter followers, about twice the combined total for the rest of the Republican field. That’s enough potential eyeballs to make the case that is is never OK not to cover him.”

Donald Trump and Sarah Palin Are Not Running

January 26, 2015 at 12:53 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 29 Comments

Time: “Both reality television stars spoke those words in 2011, in what proved to be low-cost feints designed to drum up national attention and raise their profiles before the last presidential campaign. Now they are at it again, with what appears to be a nearly identical playbook.”

“There is no evidence that either is any more serious about an actual campaign this time — no fundraising, no staff hires, no grassroots organizing in early states. But both have the same incentives to make the nation, and the political press corps, think differently. And the political press corps, struggling at the moment to interest a nation exhausted with politics in another 20-month campaign, has an incentive to write about Palin and Trump, who truth be told are simply more fun than actual presidential candidates.”

Trump Says He Would Have Beaten Obama

January 24, 2015 at 10:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard 65 Comments

Donald Trump told the Des Moines Register that the two presumed Republican presidential frontrunners, Mitt Romney and Jeb Bush, “are doomed to lose — and he expressed regret that he hadn’t run himself in 2012.

Said Trump: “I was leading in every poll. … I regret that I didn’t stay in. I would’ve won the race against Obama. He would’ve been easy. Hillary is tougher to beat than Obama, but Hillary is very beatable.”

Trump also dropped hints (again) that he might run in 2016: “It’s too early for me to say. I’ll may make a decision to run before June. But I’m strongly inclined to do so.”
