Trump Supporters Grow Angrier With Clinton

October 5, 2016 at 9:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “For years, they have not liked or trusted her — many say it’s fair to describe their feelings as hatred — and the nine days since Trump’s poor debate performance have only confirmed and intensified their feelings. At several recent Trump rallies, anti-Clinton sentiment felt stronger than ever as attendees screamed out nicknames and criticisms of her, erupted in chants of “Lock her up!” and angrily accused reporters of promoting her candidacy.”

“Trump supporters have long worn shirts or buttons labeling Clinton a ‘bitch,’ but there’s a new T-shirt popping up at recent events with an even harsher message: ‘I wish Clinton had married O.J.,’ the former football star who was acquitted in 1995 on charges that he murdered his ex-wife.”

Clinton Mocks Trump as a Bad Businessman

October 3, 2016 at 5:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Hillary Clinton mocked rival Donald Trump’s business acumen Monday and said he was getting a free ride on the backs of tax-paying working people, as she addressed the weekend leak of his tax documents for the first time,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Clinton: “While millions of American families including mine and yours were working hard and paying our fair share, it seems that he was contributing nothing to our nation. Trump was taking from America with both hands and leaving the rest of us with the bill.”

Clinton Explains the Appeal of Bernie Sanders

October 1, 2016 at 12:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In a leaked recording at a fundraiser, Hillary Clinton tried to explain the phenomenon of young voters flocking the Sen. Bernie Sanders during the primaries.

Said Clinton: “Some are new to politics completely. They’re children of the Great Recession. And they are living in their parents’ basement. They feel they got their education and the jobs that are available to them are not at all what they envisioned for themselves. And they don’t see much of a future.”

She added: “If you’re feeling like you’re consigned to, you know, being a barista, or you know, some other job that doesn’t pay a lot, and doesn’t have some other ladder of opportunity attached to it, then the idea that maybe, just maybe, you could be part of a political revolution is pretty appealing. I think we all should be really understanding of that.”

Trump Suggests He Might Not Recognize Clinton Win

October 1, 2016 at 8:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump told the New York Times that he was rethinking his statement at the last presidential debate that he would “absolutely” support Hillary Clinton if she won in November, saying: “We’re going to have to see. We’re going to see what happens. We’re going to have to see.”

Meanwhile, a new AP-NORC Center poll finds that only about a third of Republicans say they have a great deal or quite a bit of confidence that votes in this year’s election will be counted fairly.

San Diego Union-Tribune Endorses Clinton

September 30, 2016 at 7:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The San Diego Union-Tribune has endorsed Republicans for president from 1868 through 2012, but today they backed Hillary Clinton.

Vengeful, dishonest and impulsive, Trump is no Romney. This is why Hillary Clinton is the safest candidate for voters to choose in a complex world.

Terrible leaders can knock nations off course. Venezuela is falling apart because of the obstinance and delusions of Hugo Chávez and his successor. Argentina is finally coming out of the chaos created by Cristina Kirchner and several of her predecessors.

Trump could be our Chávez, our Kirchner. We cannot take that risk.

‘A President Our Kids Can Look Up To’

September 28, 2016 at 9:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton taps Michelle Obama for her latest ad, “a stark contrast from one Clinton’s campaign has been running for weeks that shows children watching TV as a montage of Trump’s most controversial and offensive remarks are played,” Politico reports.

How Clinton Laid an Elaborate Trap for Trump

September 28, 2016 at 7:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vox explains how Hillary Clinton’s mention of former Miss Universe Alicia Machado at the first presidential debate had been planned weeks in advance.

Cosmopolitan is out today with a long feature story on Machado headlined ‘Former Miss Universe Alicia Machado Won’t Be Defined by Donald Trump’s Fat-Shaming.’

The author of the story, Prachi Gupta, is the person who conducted a devastating interview with Ivanka Trump earlier in September. The Machado article includes photographs that were taken a week ago, making it clear that the groundwork for the debate moment was laid some time ago…

It turns out Machado also set up an interview with the Guardian’s Lucia Graves, apparently embargoed for post-debate release; the New York Times also has a fresh Machado story based on interviews.

The Clinton campaign also pushed out a video on social media after the debate ended.

First Read: “The personal nature of Trump’s attack, the relatability of a woman’s struggles with body image and the additional allegation that Trump referred to the Latina Miss Universe as “Miss Housekeeping” makes us think that this story isn’t going away soon.”

Clinton Ready for Trump to Bring Up Bill’s Affairs

September 27, 2016 at 10:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “As threats emanated from Trump Tower on Tuesday that the Republican nominee was preparing to name-check Bill Clinton’s mistresses — alleged or otherwise — Hillary Clinton’s aides and allies huddled hopefully in Brooklyn, eager for another opportunity to expose their opponent’s thin skin and rile up the female voters both campaigns need for the win.”

“Democrats know any resurfacing of Bill Clinton’s affairs can weigh their candidate down. But every time those sex scandals have come up, voters’ sympathy for Clinton has driven her poll numbers higher, and her team is counting on that again.”

Reaction to the First Presidential Debate

September 26, 2016 at 10:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

It was a much better debate than I expected.

Donald Trump held his own in the opening segment on trade policy. He was comfortable and spoke directly to his supporters. But as the evening continued, Hillary Clinton took the fight to Trump and kept him on the ropes.

Clinton was particularly effective when needling him on not releasing his tax returns, saying, “Why won’t he release his tax returns? Maybe he’s not as rich as he says he is.”

Trump couldn’t resist and in the resulting back-and-forth, he actually bragged about not paying his workers and not paying taxes. “It’s called business,” he repeatedly said.

On the substance of the debate, Clinton was the clear winner. She was controlled and methodical in making her case. Trump was constantly interrupting and spit out jumbled talking points that sounded like they came from some obscure corner of the Internet.

It wasn’t even close. Clinton crushed him.

Let’s face it: Anytime Trump has to defend questioning President Obama’s birthplace, it’s not going to be a good night for him. Trump’s answer was complete nonsense. Clinton was ready and called it “a racist lie.”

His lies continued while claiming to have opposed the Iraq war from the beginning. Although it won’t matter much, the fact checkers had a field day with Trump once again.

Towards the end of the debate, Trump claimed his “strongest asset” was his temperament. He did so while interrupting moderator Lester Holt and yelling at Clinton. It’s clear Trump doesn’t really know what “temperament” means.

In our polarized country, both candidates probably solidified their bases. But for those still undecided or those leaning towards a third party candidate, it should be clear that Clinton is the one better prepared for this moment.

Clinton Still Struggles with Small Donors

September 21, 2016 at 11:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “In an illustration of the lack of enthusiasm for her among some liberal activists, just 24 percent of the contributions to Mrs. Clinton’s campaign so far have been $200 or less. In 2012, 43 percent of the money to Mr. Obama was from contributors who gave $200 or less, and this year 58 percent of the giving to Mr. Sanders’s grass-roots bid came from small-dollar donors.”

Blame the Media If Clinton Loses

September 21, 2016 at 12:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Thomas Patterson: “My analysis of media coverage in the four weeks surrounding both parties’ national conventions found that her use of a private email server while secretary of State and other alleged scandal references accounted for 11% of Clinton’s news coverage in the top five television networks and six major newspapers… Excluding neutral reports, 91% of the email-related news reports were negative in tone. Then, there were the references to her character and personal life, which accounted for 4% of the coverage; that was 92% negative.”

“While Trump declared open warfare on the mainstream media — and of late they have cautiously responded in kind — it has been Clinton who has suffered substantially more negative news coverage throughout nearly the whole campaign.”

“How about her foreign, defense, social or economic policies? Don’t bother looking. Not a single one of Clinton’s policy proposals accounted for even 1% of her convention-period coverage; collectively, her policy stands accounted for a mere 4% of it. But she might be thankful for that: News reports about her stances were 71% negative to 29% positive in tone. Trump was quoted more often about her policies than she was. Trump’s claim that Clinton ‘created ISIS,’ for example, got more news attention than her announcement of how she would handle Islamic State.”

Clinton Prepares for Two Trumps at Debate

September 21, 2016 at 8:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Hillary Clinton is preparing for two different foes in Monday’s presidential debate: an on-message, disciplined Donald Trump and a freewheeling, more provocative Donald Trump,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The Democratic nominee has cleared her schedule on multiple days to test arguments and practice for her first 90-minute matchup with the GOP nominee. This week, she has convened a small group of top advisers to run through potential questions and help her anticipate an assortment of scenarios.”

“In contrast, Mr. Trump has played down the value of doing dry runs and warned of the perils of over-preparation.”

Clinton Will Try to Reintroduce Herself

September 21, 2016 at 8:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “After a year and a half of running for president, the Democratic nominee has concluded that many Americans still do not have a clear understanding of what motivates her or what she would do as president. So in the campaign’s home stretch, Clinton is trying to reintroduce herself and her ideas to the country.”

“Clinton has been unable to break through the cacophony of attacks and counter attacks she and Republican nominee Donald Trump have been yelling at each other. But she will try to do just that here Wednesday by delivering what aides billed as a sweeping address that presents her vision for an inclusive economy in which everyone has a responsibility to contribute and an opportunity to get ahead.”

Clinton Memo Outlines Path to Victory

September 19, 2016 at 9:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Staring down tightening polls both nationwide and in the battleground states, Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager Robby Mook on Monday circulated a private memo to donors, supporters and top volunteers that maps out the Democratic nominee’s various paths to the White House in November, paired with his analysis of Donald Trump’s own precarious path,” Politico reports.

From the memo: “Here’s the story that no poll can tell: Hillary Clinton has many paths to 270 electoral votes, while Donald Trump has very few. Hillary is nearly certain to win 16 ‘ blue’ states, including Washington D.C., which will garner her 191 electoral votes. If we add the five states that FiveThirtyEight.com gives Hillary a 70% or greater chance of winning (Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin), Hillary only needs 10 more electoral votes.”

“Mook then runs down the possibilities for Clinton to win the remaining 10 electoral votes: taking Florida’s 29 electoral votes, North Carolina’s 15, Ohio’s 18, or any two of Colorado, New Hampshire, Iowa, or Nevada.”

Trump Suggests Clinton Bodyguards Disarm

September 17, 2016 at 9:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump “once again raised the specter of violence against Hillary Clinton, suggesting Friday that the Secret Service agents who guard her voluntarily disarm to ‘see what happens to her’ without their protection, the New York Times reports.

Said Trump: “I think that her bodyguards should drop all weapons. I think they should disarm. Immediately.”

He went on: “Let’s see what happens to her. Take their guns away, O.K. It’ll be very dangerous.”

Clinton Seeks to Halt Third Party Drift

September 16, 2016 at 10:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Hillary Clinton and her Democratic allies, unnerved by the tightening presidential race, are making a major push to dissuade disaffected voters from backing third-party candidates, and pouring more energy into Rust Belt states, where Donald Trump is gaining ground,” the New York Times reports.

“With Mrs. Clinton enduring one of the rockiest stretches of her second bid for the presidency, her campaign and affiliated Democratic groups are shifting their focus to those voters, many of them millennials, who recoil at Mr. Trump, her Republican opponent, but now favor the Libertarian nominee, Gary Johnson, or the Green Party candidate, Jill Stein.”

If Clinton Loses, This Is Probably Why

September 14, 2016 at 9:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

The good news for Hillary Clinton is that most polls — such as the Harvard Youth Poll — show her crushing Donald Trump by more than 30-points among young voters. The bad news is there are no signs of the enthusiasm young voters showed for Barack Obama over the last two elections.
