The Ghost of W

February 18, 2015 · 9:05 am ET · 16 Comments

“The model for Jeb Bush’s campaign for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination is obvious: his brother,” Steve Kornacki writes.

“Sixteen years ago, George W. Bush joined an unusually cluttered and formless Republican field in a race considered more wide open than any the party had ever seen. Within months, though, Bush had imposed order on the process by raking in previously unimaginable sums of cash and racking up an all-star roster of endorsements. By the end of 1999, before a single primary or caucus vote had been cast, Bush had intimidated six separate rivals out of the race, with one poll putting him 48 points ahead of his nearest remaining rival.”

“But there are already signs that what worked so brilliantly for W may be futile for Jeb… And the irony is this: All these obstacles exist not in spite of the fact that George W. Bush succeeded with the same playbook in 2000, but because he did. The 43rd president, in other words, is the biggest single reason why his younger brother may fall flat on his face.”

Inside the Launch of Jeb Bush’s Campaign

February 18, 2015 · 7:18 am ET · 21 Comments

Politico: “So while even close Bush watchers began to doubt whether he was really serious about running, he and a close-knit group of advisers were following a careful plan aimed at maximizing his chances of winning the nomination, if and when he gave the thumbs up.”

“Their strategy was to publicly downplay his interest in the race and avoid media attention, while quietly laying the groundwork for a launch that would catch much of Washington – and many of his potential rivals – flat-footed. While the much of the political world focused on Chris Christie, Rand Paul, and even Bush’s fellow Floridian Marco Rubio, Bush was quietly collecting political chits, developing a cohesive platform, and preparing for a fundraising blitz intended to grab the front-runner’s chair, scare potential competitors like Mitt Romney and Christie, and put Bush on such a firm financial footing that he could devote more time to retail politics when it really counted.”

“I recognize that as a result, my views will often be held up in comparison to theirs. But I am my own man – and my views are shaped by my own thinking and own experiences.”

Vin Weber Backs Bush Campaign

February 18, 2015 · 5:40 am ET · 1 Comment

“Vin Weber, a former Minnesota congressman and top policy adviser on Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaign, is assisting Jeb Bush’s all-but-certain bid for the Republican presidential nomination, adding yet another high-powered strategist to the former Florida governor’s political circle,” the Washington Post reports.

“Weber confirmed his move Tuesday, as did a Bush aide, after several GOP officials said Weber was working behind the scenes to win Bush support among influential donors and conservative intellectuals.”

Michael Schiavo Pledges to Campaign Against Bush

February 17, 2015 · 6:49 am ET · 32 Comments

Jeb Bush’s “effort to stop Michael Schiavo from removing his brain-damaged wife’s feeding tube was a defining moment of Bush’s time in office,” the AP reports. “Bush, a devout Catholic, sided with Terri Schiavo’s parents in the end-of-life dispute and reached for unprecedented authority to intervene. Michael Schiavo said his wife did not want to be kept alive artificially.”

“As Bush moves toward a run for president in 2016, Michael Schiavo has re-emerged, promising to campaign against Bush and remind voters about the ex-governor’s role in the matter.”

Bush and Walker Lead the GOP Pack

February 15, 2015 · 10:06 am ET · 67 Comments

There are three new NBC News/Marist polls of the GOP presidential race from the early voting states.

Key takeaway: “Seven different possible Republican candidates get double-digit support in at least one of the states. But only two candidates — Jeb Bush and Scott Walker — are in double digits in all three states.”

Iowa: Huckabee 17%, Bush 16%, Walker 15%, Christie 9%, Paul 7%

New Hampshire: Bush 18%, Walker 15%,  Paul 14%,  Christie 13%.

South Carolina: Graham 17%, Bush 15%, Walker 12%, Huckabee 10%, Carson 10%.

How Jeb Bush Used Family Connections to Get Ahead

February 15, 2015 · 9:55 am ET · 26 Comments

New York Times: “For the 12 years that his father held national elective office, Mr. Bush used his unique access to the highest reaches of government to seek favors for Republican allies, push his views and burnish his political profile in his home state, a review of presidential library records shows. In the process, Mr. Bush carefully constructed an elaborate and enduring network of relationships in Florida that helped lead to his election as governor in 1998 and, now, to his place as a top contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016.”

Washington Post: “He has his own brand, but Florida’s former governor won’t easily escape the burdens of his family name.”

Bush Doesn’t Want to Talk About Past Wars

February 14, 2015 · 10:32 am ET · 93 Comments

Jeb Bush (R) said he isn’t interested in talking about Iraq war and his brother’s role in starting it, Bloomberg reports.

Said Bush: “I won’t talk about the past. I’ll talk about the future. If I’m in the process of considering the possibility of running, it’s not about re-litigating anything in the past. It’s about trying to create a set of ideas and principles that will help us move forward.”

Bush Scoops Up Romney Donors

February 14, 2015 · 10:19 am ET · 9 Comments

“Jeb Bush has quickly and efficiently been locking in one of the most sought-after prizes of the early Republican presidential primary race: Mitt Romney’s donor network,” the Boston Globe reports.

“In the two weeks since the former Massachusetts governor announced that he wasn’t going to run again for president, Bush has aggressively scooped up key former Romney contributors in the private equity and investment worlds… Of Romney’s top five lobbyist bundlers in 2012 — who each raised at least $1 million — four are supporting or likely to support Bush. The fifth is on the fence.”

Jeb Bush Winning the Money Race

February 13, 2015 · 4:30 pm ET · 49 Comments

“Jeb Bush’s money juggernaut is far eclipsing the efforts of his would-be rivals for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, putting his two political committees on pace to amass an unprecedented sum of tens of millions of dollars by early spring,” the Washington Post reports.

“The former Florida governor’s overwhelming dominance in the race to line up financial backers has come at a speed that has impressed longtime Republican money players, who say wealthy party backers have rapidly migrated to Bush since 2012 nominee Mitt Romney decided against another White House run two weeks ago.”

Bloomberg: “Only five weeks after its founding, Bush’s Right to Rise is spreading its wealth in early primary states. As Jeb Bush stockpiles a political war chest for his presidential campaign-in-waiting, his finance committee has donated $122,800 to Republican officials and state parties in the first five weeks of its existence, an indication of the tactical focus and tenacity with which the former Florida governor is approaching both giving and receiving in the early days of the 2016 fundraising season.”

Bush Is Already Running Full Steam

February 12, 2015 · 8:53 am ET · 33 Comments

Morning Line: “For someone who is supposedly not running yet for president, Jeb Bush is running what is pretty close to a full-on presidential campaign. There have been bumps on the road — his digital chief who quit before barely starting because of misogynistic (and more) tweets. And his email dump — meant to pre-butt criticism — that was unredacted and included some sensitive constituent information. But when you step back, you can see his campaign is trying to orchestrate a careful message rollout, complete with a string of policy speeches meant to frame thorny issues — as well as media pushback and outreach through his PAC, Right to Rise, that looks more like the rapid response during a presidential than any other campaign yet.”

Bush Email Dump Contained Highly Personal Information

February 11, 2015 · 9:28 am ET · 23 Comments

Jeb Bush “decided to publish hundreds of thousands of emails sent to him during his time as governor of Florida. On its face it seems like a great idea in the name of transparency, but there’s one huge problem: neither Bush nor those who facilitated the publication of the records, including the state government, decided to redact potentially sensitive personal information from them,” The Verge reports.

“We reviewed many of the emails released by Bush, and found a wide variety of communications — everything from religious parables, to praise of the governor’s support of creationism, to routine bureaucratic correspondence. But some of the emails appear to be highly sensitive or personal… Some include personal appeals from citizens with medical or employment issues. And a subset of these messages contain sensitive data like social security numbers.”

Bush Holds $100K Per Ticket Fundraiser

February 11, 2015 · 7:37 am ET · 16 Comments

“Jeb Bush will raise money on Wall Street on Wednesday at an eye-popping $100,000 per-ticket Park Avenue event hosted by private equity mogul Henry Kravis and his wife,” Politico reports.

“The price of admission to the event, which will raise funds for Bush’s Right to Rise super PAC, surprised even Wall Street veterans used to high-dollar fundraisers. The event comes as Bush continues a shock and awe approach to early 2016 fundraising that people close to the campaign say could eventually see the former governor reach a total of between $50 million and $100 million between the super PAC, a traditional political action committee and an eventual presidential campaign.”

Jeb Bush Leans Towards Father on Foreign Policy

February 11, 2015 · 6:30 am ET · 11 Comments

“Jeb Bush faces a unique dilemma as he builds a Republican presidential campaign—whether to follow in the foreign-policy footsteps of his father or his brother,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“One early indication suggests he is leaning toward his father’s more pragmatic and restrained philosophy. The former Florida governor is considering naming Meghan O’Sullivan as his top foreign-policy aide; several people familiar with the deliberations describe her as the front-runner for the post.”

Bush Releases Emails from Time as Governor

February 10, 2015 · 9:52 am ET · 15 Comments

Jeb Bush unveiled a website containing 250,000 emails from his time as Florida governor, as well as the first chapter of his new e-book, which chronicles his emails with Floridians, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Writes Bush: “My staff estimated I spent 30 hours a week answering emails, either from my laptop or BlackBerry, often while on the road. The idea of this book, through the use of these emails, is to tell the story of a life of a governor. No day is like the one before it… The unexpected became the expected.”

First Read: “The conspicuous push for transparency is intended as a clear contrast to some of the questions that dogged both Mitt Romney and Hillary Clinton in their own past runs, but Democrats are quick to point out that there’s a lot more where those emails came from; Bush has said that he received 550,000 emails on his private account and another 2.5 million on his public one.”

How Long Will Jeb Bush Hold His Fire?

February 10, 2015 · 7:18 am ET · 10 Comments

Bloomberg: “So far, Bush has been content to let it all slide, refusing to take the bait from traps that Republican Senators Ted Cruz and Rand Paul and Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal and New York businessman Donald Trump have been laying for the past several months. But that’s a strategy in itself: Bush, speaking last week in Detroit, said he was hopeful that presidential candidates would focus on their own accomplishments, and not attack others. In a way, it’s a rose-garden approach, not dissimilar to the one currently being followed by Hillary Clinton. The calculus may be that attacking these rivals would bring him down to their level.”

“But there’s risk in delaying a response for too long… Bush’s return volley may be coming soon. He’s scheduled to address the CPAC conference later this month in Washington, a lion’s den of conservative activists who enjoy a vivid show from their candidates.”
