Trump Escalates Attacks on Sessions

September 3, 2018 at 3:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump stepped up his attacks on Attorney General Jeff Sessions, suggesting the Department of Justice put Republicans in midterm jeopardy with recent indictments of two GOP congressmen, the AP reports.

In his latest broadside against the Justice Department’s traditional independence, Trump tweeted that “Obama era investigations, of two very popular Republican Congressmen were brought to a well publicized charge, just ahead of the Mid-Terms, by the Jeff Sessions Justice Department.”

He added: “Two easy wins now in doubt because there is not enough time. Good job Jeff…”

Axios: “This sets up a bigger crisis than we might have imagined if, as expected, he eventually fires Sessions. How do you find a replacement A.G. who is both confirmable and the modern incarnation of Roy Cohn that Trump openly yearns for?”

Graham Says New AG Must Let Mueller Finish

August 28, 2018 at 8:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said that if President Trump replaces Attorney General Jeff Sessions, “his new nominee would have to promise the Senate that he would allow special counsel Robert Mueller to complete his investigation,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Graham: “You have to replace him with somebody who is highly qualified and will commit to the Senate to allow Mueller to do his job. Nobody is going to take Jeff’s place that doesn’t commit to the Senate and the country as a whole that Mueller will be allowed to finish his job without political interference.”

Graham raised eyebrows last week when he seemed to give Trump his blessing to fire Sessions, telling reporters that the president was “entitled to an attorney general he has faith in.”

Opposition Research Isn't Just for Politics Anymore

Political operatives know how easy it is to dig up someone’s phone number, old addresses, family connections, and workplace. The same tools used in campaigns and opposition research are now used by scammers.

One Redditor described a chilling experience: “A stranger called me, my ex, his girlfriend, my brother, my cousin, and my parents. He knew everyone’s names — even where I work.”

That’s because your data never disappears. Old jobs, past moves, and personal details are collected, archived, and sold by data brokers and people-search sites.

Incogni removes your personal data from these sites and keeps monitoring to make sure it stays gone.

Falwell Urges Trump to Fire Sessions

August 27, 2018 at 6:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jerry Falwell Jr. told Politico that he urged President Trump to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions over his handling of investigations into Russian election meddling, saying the attorney general has lost evangelicals’ support.

Falwell also said he plans to bring up the subject again Monday evening at a small gathering with Trump and the first lady.

Sasse Threatens to Vote Against New Attorney General

August 23, 2018 at 9:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) said he “would be highly unlikely to vote for any new attorney general nominee if President Trump were to fire Jeff Sessions,” the Washington Examiner reports.

Said Sasse: “I find it really difficult to envision any circumstance where I would vote to confirm a successor to Jeff Sessions if he is fired because he’s executing his job, rather than choosing to act as a partisan hack. The attorney general of the United States should not be fired for acting honorably and for being faithful to the rule of law.”

Senate Wall of Support for Sessions Crumbles

August 23, 2018 at 7:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “GOP leaders moved quickly to quell a rebellion against Sessions after Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) signaled publicly that they’d be willing to give Trump what he wants and confirm a new attorney general after the midterms — even at the cost of betraying a former Senate colleague.”

“Two Republicans close to Trump said that the president did not appear to be on the verge of firing Sessions. But Graham’s remarks were the first sign that Capitol Hill may be starting to bend to Trump’s will when it comes to desire to send his attorney general packing — and they may have made it more likely.”

Graham Says Trump Will Oust Sessions After Election

August 23, 2018 at 12:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said it’s “very likely” President Trump will replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions but warned against doing so before the midterm elections, Bloomberg reports.

Said Graham: “The president’s entitled to an attorney general he has faith in, somebody that’s qualified for the job, and I think there will come a time, sooner rather than later, where it will be time to have a new face and a fresh voice at the Department of Justice. Clearly, Attorney General Sessions doesn’t have the confidence of the president.”

Pruitt Lobbied Trump to Replace Sessions

July 3, 2018 at 5:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt “directly appealed to President Trump this spring to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions and let him run the Department of Justice instead,” CNN reports.

“In an Oval Office conversation with Trump, Pruitt offered to temporarily replace Sessions for 210 days under the Vacancies Reform Act, telling the President he would return to Oklahoma afterward to run for office.”

“Advisers quickly shot down the proposal, but it came at a time when Trump’s frustration with Sessions over his decision to recuse himself from overseeing the Russia investigation had resurfaced.”

The Political Fringe Is Now In Power

June 19, 2018 at 7:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Jeff Sessions and Stephen Miller spent years on the political fringe in the nation’s capital as high-decibel immigration hard-liners, always warning about the dangers of open borders but rarely in a position to affect law or policy,” the New York Times reports.

“Now, Mr. Sessions, the attorney general and former senator from Alabama, and Mr. Miller, the president’s top policy adviser and former Senate aide to Mr. Sessions, have moved from the edges of the immigration debate to its red-hot center. Powerful like never before, the two are the driving force behind President Trump’s policy that has led thousands of children to be separated from their parents at the nation’s southern border.”

Church Calls Out Sessions Over Separation Policy

June 17, 2018 at 8:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A statement from the United Methodist Church explicitly calls out Attorney General Jeff Sessions as a “fellow United Methodist” and asks him to reverse the Trump administration’s decision to split up migrant families after he claimed the Bible justified it.

Jesus is our way, our truth, our life. The Christ we follow would have no part in ripping children from their mothers’ arms or shunning those fleeing violence. It is unimaginable that faith leaders even have to say that these policies are antithetical to the teachings of Christ.

Christian sacred texts should never be used to justify policies that oppress or harm children and families.

Trump Breaks with Sessions Over Marijuana Bill

June 8, 2018 at 2:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump appeared to break with his own administration’s policy on Friday, saying that he was likely to support a legislative proposal to leave the decision to states about whether to legalize marijuana,” the New York Times reports.

Said Trump: “We’re looking at it. But I probably will end up supporting that, yes.”

Trump Is Consumed with Jeff Sessions

June 6, 2018 at 6:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Trump’s fury with Sessions is so ever-present it has taken to darkening his moods even during otherwise happy moments. On Thursday, Trump was on Air Force One returning from a trip to Texas, reveling in both a successful day of fundraising and the heads-up he had received from economic adviser Larry Kudlow that the next day’s jobs report would be positive.”

“But when an aide mentioned Sessions, Trump abruptly ended the conversation and unmuted the television in his office broadcasting Fox News, dismissing the staffer to resume watching cable.”

Trump Blames Sessions for ‘Russian Witch Hunt Hoax’

June 5, 2018 at 8:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump ripped Attorney General Jeff Sessions once again on Twitter:

The Russian Witch Hunt Hoax continues, all because Jeff Sessions didn’t tell me he was going to recuse himself… I would have quickly picked someone else. So much time and money wasted, so many lives ruined…and Sessions knew better than most that there was No Collusion!

Inside the GOP Effort to Protect Jeff Sessions

May 31, 2018 at 7:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Ten months later, the Republican campaign to save Sessions has continued and — at least for now — succeeded. In private meetings, public appearances on television and late-night phone calls, Trump’s advisers and allies have done all they can to persuade the president not to fire a Cabinet official he dismisses as disloyal. The effort is one of the few effective Republican attempts to install guardrails around a president who delights in defying advice and breaking the rules.”

“It’s an ongoing effort, though not everyone is convinced the relationship is sustainable for the long term.”
