Why Romney Might Not Want to Run in 2016

January 23, 2015 at 6:42 am EST By Taegan Goddard 14 Comments

The Fix looks at recent national polls and finds Mitt Romney “performs worse than he did in 2012 among almost every demographic tested (for which we have comparisons between the two polls and his 2012 showing). And that’s a comparison to an election that he lost.”

“He beat President Obama among independents by five points in 2012; he now trails among them by eight or nine points, depending on which poll you choose (we prefer WaPo-ABC). He won whites by 20 points in 2012; he now leads by just four or five points. He won males by seven points; he’s now trailing by 7-12 points. And on and on.”

Big Romney Donors Consider Other Options

January 22, 2015 at 8:21 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 14 Comments

The Center for Public Integrity “in recent days attempted to contact roughly 90 top Romney fundraisers from his most recent presidential run, including every federal lobbyist who helped him raise $30,000 or more.”

“The vast majority willing to speak on the record say they haven’t decided whom to support in 2016. Almost all of these fundraisers said they’re wrestling with conflicting loyalties to Romney, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and other potential Republican hopefuls such as Sens. Marco Rubio and Lindsey Graham and Govs. Mike Pence, Scott Walker and Chris Christie.”

Romney Says Both Parties are Failing Nation

January 22, 2015 at 9:42 am EST By Taegan Goddard 124 Comments

“Outlining his possible rationale for a third presidential bid, Mitt Romney said Wednesday night that political leaders in both parties are failing to address the nation’s most pressing problems — climate change, poverty and education reform, among them — as he acknowledged lessons learned from his failed 2012 presidential campaign,” the AP reports.

“While hitting familiar Republican points criticizing the size of the federal debt, Romney at times sounded like a Democrat, calling for President Obama and other leaders in Washington to act on common liberal priorities such as climate change, poverty and education… His evolving platform comes as he works to reshape his image after consecutive presidential defeats.”

Flashback Quote of the Day

“When I watch John Edwards from time to time get up and talk about two Americas. I’m tempted to—well, offer an expletive like, ‘Baloney!'”

— Mitt Romney, quoted by CBS News in 2008, before his new found concern about income inequality in America.

Bonus Footage from ‘Mitt’ Released

January 22, 2015 at 8:11 am EST By Taegan Goddard 8 Comments

Three bonus scenes from the Netflix documentary “Mitt,” were released this week on the film’s one-year anniversary, the Washington Post reports.

“The bonus documentary footage shows Romney at the Tampa convention spending time with his family, advisers and running mate Paul Ryan in his hotel suite and backstage at the convention hall. Also included are scenes where Romney leads his advisers on a tour of Cranbrook School, his Detroit area prep school alma mater, as well as a prank call during the 2008 campaign from one of his sons faking an impersonation of then-California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.”

Bush and Romney Scheduled to Meet

January 22, 2015 at 6:51 am EST By Taegan Goddard 10 Comments

Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney “are scheduled to meet privately this week in Utah, raising the possibility that the two former governors will find a way to avoid competing presidential campaigns that would split the Republican establishment next year,” the New York Times reports.

“The meeting was planned before Mr. Romney’s surprise announcement two weeks ago to donors in New York that he was considering a third run for the White House… The original idea was for Mr. Bush, who announced his presidential ambitions in December, to show his respect for Mr. Romney, the Republican Party’s 2012 nominee. The meeting stayed on both men’s calendars even as Mr. Romney took steps to test the presidential waters, moves that could make the meeting awkward.”

Chris Christie Sinks to Sarah Palin Territory

January 18, 2015 at 12:22 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 62 Comments

A new CBS poll shows 29% of Republicans would like to see Christie run for the Republican nomination for president. But 44% say no. Only former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s numbers are more underwater: 30% of Republicans say they’d like to see her run, but 59% disagree.

In contrast, 59% of Republicans would like to see Mitt Romney jump into the 2016 race, while 26% believe he should stay out.

Quote of the Day

January 18, 2015 at 8:42 am EST By Taegan Goddard 12 Comments

“Romney’s problem has always been really about believability and connection with the challenges of average Americans. It’s simply never going to be believable to go from car elevators, off-shore accounts and his famous 47 percent comment to the populist income equality warrior.”

— Obama 2012 campaign manager Jim Messina, quoted by Politico, on Mitt Romney’s new focus on poverty.

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

January 17, 2015 at 3:14 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 9 Comments

“Romney’s case is different than Reagan’s. He lost the nomination decisively to John McCain in 2008, and in 2012 he defeated a historically weak field (well, aside from my dad) – and that was mainly thanks to his ability to raise more money and pound his competitors with negative ads.”

— Abby Huntsman, writing for MSNBC, on Mitt Romney thinking of running for president a third time.

“The third time is not a charm. And as much respect and admiration as I have for Governor Romney I’m not one of those who is encouraging him to enter the race right now. Again, I just don’t think there’s much to be gained by a third kick here. I don’t think it’ll work out for him.”

Romney Outlines Theme for Possible Campaign

January 17, 2015 at 7:46 am EST By Taegan Goddard 96 Comments

“Mitt Romney made it clear publicly on Friday night what he has spent the last week conveying in private to Republicans across the country: He is considering another presidential campaign,” the New York Times reports. “He said the 2016 campaign should center on making the world safer, offering opportunity for all Americans and lifting people out of poverty.”

Said Romney: “Under President Obama the rich have gotten richer, income inequality has gotten worse and there are more people in poverty in America than ever before.”

Associated Press: “Romney is offering a rare glimpse of his softer side as he marches toward an unlikely third presidential bid focused on poverty and the middle class.”

The Sadness of Mitt

January 16, 2015 at 10:35 am EST By Taegan Goddard 129 Comments

Alex Massie: “The suggestion Mitt Romney might make another run for the Presidency of the United States made me think of a line from one of my father’s novels: ‘There’s nothing so sad as the memory of lost fucks.’ There’s a measure of wistful sadness but also some wry resignation.”

“The obvious reaction is that, hey Mittens, third time ain’t no charm. Because that’s the way it’s supposed to work these days. You’re supposed to accept being beaten, supposed to retire gracefully from the fray, supposed to recognise it’s someone else’s turn. This ain’t Richard Nixon’s America and it’s not Ronald Reagan’s either.”

“And yet, in one sense, why should Romney accept it is someone else’s turn? It is not as though the Republican party is over-freighted with stars likely to defeat Hillary Clinton. Who can blame Romney for thinking he’s got as good a shot as any of these other schlubs?”

GOP Officials Not Ready for Romney

January 16, 2015 at 7:24 am EST By Taegan Goddard 5 Comments

Politico: “In interviews this week with nearly a dozen committee members — the people who comprise the most active and powerful core of the party apparatus — nearly all expressed deep skepticism about a third Romney White House bid. The sentiment was unambigious: The GOP needs to find a new candidate to carry the party past its painful 2012 loss and back to the White House.”

Explaining Romneyism

January 16, 2015 at 7:19 am EST By Taegan Goddard 70 Comments

Peggy Noonan: “There was something known as Reaganism. It was a real movement within the party and then the nation. Reaganism had meaning. You knew what you were voting for. It was a philosophy that people understood. Philosophies are powerful. They carry you, and if they are right and pertinent to the moment they make you inevitable.”

“There is no such thing as Romneyism and there never will be. Mr. Romney has never encompassed a philosophical world. He has never become the symbol of an attitude toward government, or an approach to freedom or fairness. ‘Romneyism’ is just ‘Mitt should be president.’ That is not enough.”

Clinton Aides Prefer to Face Off Against Romney

January 15, 2015 at 7:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard 32 Comments

“Advisers to Hillary Clinton said the former secretary of state has a better shot of winning the White House in a race against former Mitt Romney than she does against Jeb Bush,” the New York Daily News reports.

“Clinton advisers said Romney has proven he lacks the ability to relate to voters and comes across as out of touch.”

Said former White House aide Tommy Vietor: “I would like to run against Mitt Romney in every election forever.”
