Democrats May Have Just Put Away Nevada

November 5, 2016 at 10:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jon Ralston: “Donald Trump will be in Reno on Saturday, but the Republicans almost certainly lost Nevada on Friday.”

“Trump’s path was nearly impossible, as I have been telling you, before what happened in Clark County on Friday. But now he needs a Miracle in Vegas on Election Day — and a Buffalo Bills Super Bowl championship is more likely — to turn this around. The ripple effect down the ticket probably will cost the Republicans Harry Reid’s Senate seat, two GOP House seats and control of the Legislature.”

David Wasserman says Nevada may be “a potential top-to-bottom Republican disaster.”

How Democrats Dominate Early Voting in Nevada

October 24, 2016 at 2:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Katy Perry’s glamor, Tom Steyer’s money, Univision’s megaphone and organized labor’s muscle, along with a late assist from Barack Obama, each helped lubricate Harry Reid’s well-oiled political machine over the past 48 hours.”

“The media tends to focus on the lack of enthusiasm for Hillary Clinton relative to President Obama, which is real, but a few thousand more ballots were cast in Nevada on Saturday — during the first day of early voting — than during the kickoff day four years ago, when there was a similar flurry of activity to propel Democrats to the polls. And that was before Air Force One touched down yesterday afternoon.”

“It is a testament to the power of the organization that Reid, the retiring Senate Minority Leader, has built over three decades, which he is now using to get Clinton and his hand-picked successor, Catherine Cortez Masto, across the finish line. As much as 60 percent of the vote will be cast before Nov. 8 in the Silver State.”

Clinton Has Huge Swing State Lead with Latinos

September 14, 2016 at 11:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Univision poll of Latino voters in Arizona, Colorado, Florida and Nevada shows Hillary Clinton trouncing Donald Trump among this critical voting bloc.

In Florida, Trump trails Clinton by 24 percentage points — the closest margin out of the four states. Clinton leads Trump 68% to 18% in Arizona, 65% to 19% in Nevada and 62% to 17% in Colorado.

Florida, Colorado and Nevada are three battleground states where Latinos are likely to make up more than 10% of the electorate this year.

Clinton Just Ahead In Nevada

July 11, 2016 at 2:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Monmouth University poll in Nevada finds Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump by just four points, 45% to 41%.

Key finding: 44% of Nevada voters believe that Clinton acted criminally in dealing with her private email server, another 27% say she showed poor judgment and just 13% say she did nothing out of the ordinary.

In the U.S. Senate race, Rep. Joe Heck (R) leads by two points over Catherine Cortez Masto, 42% to 40%.

Defiant Sanders Rips Nevada Democrats

May 17, 2016 at 4:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 233 Comments

Bernie Sanders “accused the Nevada Democratic Party of abusing its power to unfairly hurt his campaign, and denied accusations of promoting violence among his supporters,” The Hill reports.

Said Sanders: “The Democratic leadership used its power to prevent a fair and transparent process from taking place. If the Democratic Party is to be successful in November, it is imperative that all state parties treat our campaign supporters with fairness and the respect that they have earned.”

But new audio obtained by CNN shows a senior Sanders aide — on the eve of the Nevada convention — encouraging the senator’s supporters try to “take over” the convention, change party rules and continue the “revolution” that Sanders has long campaigned on.

A Messy Result for Nevada Democrats

May 16, 2016 at 12:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 84 Comments

Washington Post: “Saturday’s raucous state Democratic convention in Nevada encapsulated a lot of the themes of the party’s 2016 election in a relatively short period: complex delegate math, inscrutable processes, allegations of deceit, fury — and a result that doesn’t do much of anything to shift the race’s eventual outcome.”

Harry Reid’s Last Stand In Nevada

April 22, 2016 at 3:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 18 Comments

Jon Ralston: “Nevada is a battleground state, with a significant role to play in the presidential race, a Senate seat that might determine whether Democrats regain control of that chamber and key congressional races that could make inroads in the GOP’s majority in the House. Reid, summoning all his considerable political muscle, is determined to erase the stain of 2014 and leave his stamp on his home state and the nation.”

“That no one who understands Nevada politics and who has studied Reid thinks this is impossible shows just how feared the minority leader remains, and just how determined he is. Reid will not be on the ballot in 2016, but he looms as large as ever over this election.”

Trump Wins In Nevada

February 23, 2016 at 11:08 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 146 Comments

Donald Trump was declared the winner of the Nevada caucuses on Tuesday night, the New York Times reports, “gaining a third consecutive victory in an early-voting state and strengthening his position in the Republican presidential race before the wave of Super Tuesday elections on March 1.”

“Mr. Trump was seen as a favorite going into the contest, and his victory serves as a setback for his chief competitors, Senators Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida, who must now try to break Mr. Trump’s winning streak in the larger states that vote in the coming weeks.”

The Nevada Republican Party has the results.

Don’t Expect Nevada Results Tonight

February 23, 2016 at 5:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 28 Comments

First Read: “Today is the Nevada contest on the Republican side, but don’t expect to find out the results at a reasonable hour. Caucus-goers start gathering between 8:00 pm ET and 10:00 pm ET (submitting votes via paper ballot). All meetings end by midnight ET. In addition, the contest doesn’t have a history of being well run.”

“Bottom line: We won’t know who wins until very late – even possibly tomorrow.”

Jon Ralston says the best case scenario is getting results by 2 a.m. ET.

Trump Runs Against ‘Dangerous’ Caucus System

February 23, 2016 at 7:17 am EST By Taegan Goddard 19 Comments

Donald Trump is crusading against the Nevada caucuses, Politico reports.

Said Trump: “A lot of strange things happen here. The caucus system is dangerous, to use a very nice word. It’s sort of a dangerous system.”

Rivals Hope to Stop Trump in Nevada

February 23, 2016 at 7:08 am EST By Taegan Goddard 16 Comments

“Donald Trump’s Republican rivals are seeking to make a stand against him in the Nevada caucuses on Tuesday, their last chance to slow his momentum before a dozen states vote on the party’s presidential nomination next week,” the New York Times reports.

“But it may be difficult to stop Mr. Trump in Nevada, where he has enjoyed a high profile because of his business dealings in Las Vegas and where only a small number of voters have typically participated in the caucuses.”

Politico: “Nevada is Donald Trump’s to lose. That, you can take to the bank. But variables that will crystallize the state of the race heading into next week’s Super Tuesday contests — the size of Trump’s expected win and the race for second place between Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz — remain wild cards here as Republicans head out to caucus on Tuesday.”

Trump Heads to Nevada

February 22, 2016 at 7:07 am EST By Taegan Goddard 6 Comments

“As for the Republicans, it is their turn to head to Nevada, where Donald Trump owns a hotel and has a commanding lead. Caucuses did not favor Mr. Trump in Iowa, where organization mattered a great deal and where his campaign was not well prepared. Nevada, as well as the Super Tuesday states, will be another big test of his ability to organize,” the New York Times reports.

Los Angeles Times: “As elsewhere, the Manhattan billionaire will capitalize on the free media exposure he attracts as a reality television star. Fox News is giving him an hour Monday night on Hannity. Trump’s only other scheduled stop in Nevada is a lunchtime rally at a casino outside Reno on Tuesday, the day of the state’s Republican caucuses.”

Jon Ralston: “Donald Trump is going to win Nevada easily.”

Nevada GOP Braces for Caucus Mayhem

February 21, 2016 at 5:34 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 44 Comments

“Unlike in Iowa, where the state parties recruited Microsoft to build a high-tech caucus results reporting system, or New Hampshire and South Carolina, where state elections officials conduct the primaries, in Nevada county GOP officials have responsibility for holding local caucuses, counting ballots and reporting results,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Republican volunteers at each of the 36 caucus locations will count ballots by hand, write the results on an envelope, take a photograph of the envelope and text the photo to Ed Williams, the Clark County Republican Party chairman, and to state GOP officials. The state party is also allowing the Associated Press to monitor the results as they come in from precincts; in 2012 the party announced results itself on Twitter.”

Sanders Says Lower Turnout Led to Loss

February 21, 2016 at 5:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 51 Comments

Bernie Sanders acknowledged that he “failed to turn out as many people in the Nevada caucuses as he hoped he would, a factor the Vermont senator suggested contributed to his loss on Saturday to Hillary Clinton,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Sanders: “What I’ve said over and over again, we will do well when young people, when working-class people come out. We do not do well when the voter turnout is not large. We did not do as good a job as I had wanted to bring out a large turnout.”

Why Nevada Is So Hard to Poll

February 20, 2016 at 8:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard 6 Comments

Clare Malone: “For starters, when it comes to surveying public opinion, Nevada is still very much the Wild West, and pollsters may be unwilling to gamble their reputations on the state: Nevada is among the hardest places to poll in the nation, with a spotty track record to prove it.”

“Nevada populace’s is still pretty unfamiliar with caucusing, making for difficult polling work.”

“Nevadans are also notoriously hard to pin down for a survey. Many work night shifts, thanks to the state’s thriving hotel and gaming industry, meaning that they aren’t home to answer the phone in the evening, when polling calls are typically placed… And given that the state’s population is highly transitory — the bright lights and job prospects on the Strip draw people in like moths to a flame — phone calling can itself be a highly inefficient process.”

Nevada Is No Longer a Firewall for Clinton

February 19, 2016 at 7:04 am EST By Taegan Goddard 67 Comments

New York Times: “A victory for Mrs. Clinton would not be as remarkable a feat as it would be for Mr. Sanders, given her history in Nevada and months of hard preparatory work. But a loss could raise concerns among Democrats about her viability.”

“Mrs. Clinton’s aides have appeared to brace for the worst here, playing down expectations and shifting their attention to the South Carolina primary the following weekend and on the 11 states that hold contests on Super Tuesday, March 1.”

Amy Walter: “How she performs in Nevada is also going to set the table, and the narrative, for the South Carolina primary on February 27th. And, already, there are signs that her firewall has some serious cracks.”

Clinton Has Edge in Nevada Poll

February 18, 2016 at 3:55 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 28 Comments

A new Gravis Marketing survey in Nevada shows Hillary Clinton leading Bernie Sanders among likely caucusgoers, 53% to 47%.

On the Republican side, Donald Trump leads with 39%, followed by Ted Cruz at 23%, Marco Rubio at 19%, John Kasich at 9%, Jeb Bush at 5% and Ben Carson at 5%.

Why the Stakes Are So High in Nevada

February 18, 2016 at 9:18 am EST By Taegan Goddard 127 Comments

First Read: “Both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have plenty on the line here in Nevada. A Clinton loss — in a state where she held the early organizational and demographic advantages — would launch another week’s worth of negative headlines for her campaign, hardly the momentum it wants going into South Carolina.”

“So it would be painful loss. But as we wrote earlier this week, a Sanders loss could even be more impactful because it would set up Hillary Clinton to start running the table over the next two weeks in South Carolina and the southern March 1 states. And if that’s the case, come March 2, she might have a delegate lead that’s impossible to catch up to given the proportional nature of all of the Democratic races. So Sanders needs a win to keep the pressure on Clinton, and Clinton needs a win to finally start pulling away.”
