Comey Thinks Mueller May Be Close to End

September 19, 2018 at 7:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former FBI Director James Comey told St. Louis Public Radio that he thinks that with the plea deal and cooperation by Paul Manafort, special counsel Robert Mueller may be in “the fourth quarter” of his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Said Comey: “The reason I’m hesitant to even say that is because Bob Mueller’s conducted his investigation like a pro — you know nothing about it except through his public filings, and that’s the way it’s supposed to be. And so I can’t say with certainty where he is.”

“He’s not going to survive Manafort’s testimony… I think there’s a substantial possibility that this evidence that Manafort is offering will implicate somebody up the chain.”

— Former White House ethics lawyer Norman Eisen, in an interview on ABC News, saying that he believes this is “not the beginning of the end, but the end of the beginning for Donald Trump.”

Michael Cohen Is Talking to Mueller Too

September 14, 2018 at 4:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vanity Fair: “In recent weeks, it has also become common knowledge among close friends of Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal attorney, that Cohen is talking to the Mueller team, according to people familiar with the situation.”

“For months, Cohen has appeared to signal his willingness to cooperate with the government, both with the Southern District of New York and the special counsel’s office. While prosecutors for the Southern District did not initially approach Cohen about a cooperating agreement before he pleaded guilty, many speculated that he could still cut a deal in the months between the plea and his sentencing in December. Those familiar with Cohen’s thinking were unsure about what he might have to offer prosecutors, but because he had worked so closely with Trump and his family for more than a decade, it was assumed that he could potentially be a useful corroborating witness.”

Why Robert Mueller Stays Quiet

September 13, 2018 at 11:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Silence as a public relations strategy is risky, especially for someone who is impugned almost daily by Fox News pundits, Trump allies like Rudolph W. Giuliani and tweets from the president himself. Supporters fear that the fusillade is eroding public confidence in the special counsel’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election before Mr. Mueller has a chance to present his findings.”

“Yet veterans of similar investigations say that keeping quiet may be Mr. Mueller’s only viable option, given the limited set of strategies available for federal prosecutors to communicate with the public. By law, special counsels must follow Justice Department guidelines that restrict them from sharing details about pending investigations, making leaks a potential criminal matter.”

Mueller Significantly More Popular Than Trump

September 12, 2018 at 7:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Special counsel Robert Mueller’s approval rating for handling the Russia investigation stands at 50% in a new CNN Poll… That outpaces President Trump’s approval rating on the matter by 20 points.”

“Mueller’s approval rating stands at its highest level in CNN polling, rising 3 points since August, a shift within the poll’s margin of sampling error. Trump’s rating, meanwhile, dipped 4 points, narrowly larger than the error margin.”

Quote of the Day

“I’m not going to sit there and let him look like an idiot. And you publish that transcript, because everything leaks in Washington, and the guys overseas are going to say, ‘I told you he was an idiot. I told you he was a goddamn dumbbell. What are we dealing with this idiot for?'”

— Trump personal lawyer John Dowd, quoted in Bob Woodward’s Fear, explaining to special counsel Robert Mueller that letting President Trump testify could be a national security risk.

Trump Erupted When Mueller Was Appointed

September 5, 2018 at 6:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

On the day after Robert Mueller was named special counsel, Bob Woodward writes in Fear, President Trump “erupted into uncontrollable anger, visibly agitated to a degree that no one in his inner circle had witnessed before,” Axios reports.

“He watched a two-hour block of Fox News, and then most of the two-hour long blocks of MSNBC and CNN that he had TiVo’d. … He raged at the coverage. … ‘Everybody’s trying to get me … It’s unfair. Now everybody’s saying I’m going to be impeached … They’re going to spend years digging through my whole life and finances.'”

Mueller Will Accept Some Written Answers From Trump

September 4, 2018 at 6:53 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Special counsel Robert Mueller “will accept written answers from President Trump on questions about whether his campaign conspired with Russia’s election interference, Mr. Mueller’s office told Mr. Trump’s lawyers in a letter,” the New York Times reports.

“But on another significant aspect of the investigation — whether the president tried to obstruct the inquiry itself — Mr. Mueller and his investigators understood that issues of executive privilege could complicate their pursuit of a presidential interview and did not ask for written responses on that matter.”

“Mr. Mueller did not say that he was giving up on an interview altogether, including on questions of obstruction of justice. But the tone of the letter and the fact that the special counsel did not ask for written responses on obstruction prompted some Trump allies to conclude that if an interview takes place, its scope will be more limited than Mr. Trump’s legal team initially believed.”

Mueller Anticipation Builds as 60-Day Window Nears

August 30, 2018 at 8:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The window closes next week for special counsel Robert Mueller to take any more bombshell actions before midterm season officially kicks off, and people in the president’s orbit and across Washington are watching with heightened anticipation that his final pre-election surprise could come soon,” Politico reports.

“The increased attention stems from Justice Department guidelines that recommend against law enforcement taking major investigative or prosecutorial actions close to an election, so as not to unduly influence voters. Although primaries have been underway for months, Giuliani and others have said the 60-day period before the election should be free of any big activity by Mueller’s team.”

Meanwhile, Chuck Todd issued a warning to the press regarding the Russia investigation: “Don’t miss work tomorrow.”

Trump Lawyers Drafting ‘Counter Report’ to Mueller

August 30, 2018 at 5:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rudy Giuliani told the Daily Beast that President Trump’s legal team is crafting a “counter-report” that will seek to delegitimize special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election meddling and present countervailing arguments.

Said Giuliani: “The first half of it is 58 pages, and second half isn’t done yet… It needs an executive summary if it goes over a hundred.”

“Giuliani said that Trump’s legal team had not conducted any original interviews or investigation for their current draft.”

Graham Says New AG Must Let Mueller Finish

August 28, 2018 at 8:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said that if President Trump replaces Attorney General Jeff Sessions, “his new nominee would have to promise the Senate that he would allow special counsel Robert Mueller to complete his investigation,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Graham: “You have to replace him with somebody who is highly qualified and will commit to the Senate to allow Mueller to do his job. Nobody is going to take Jeff’s place that doesn’t commit to the Senate and the country as a whole that Mueller will be allowed to finish his job without political interference.”

Graham raised eyebrows last week when he seemed to give Trump his blessing to fire Sessions, telling reporters that the president was “entitled to an attorney general he has faith in.”

Giuliani Says Mueller Needs to Wrap Up Probe

August 26, 2018 at 7:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rudy Giuliani is willing to concede that special counsel Robert Mueller is conducting a fair investigation into alleged Trump campaign collusion with Russia — but only if Mueller wraps it up in the next two weeks and finds Donald Trump innocent.

Tweeted Giuliani: “Just a few days before 60 day run-up to 2018 elections. If Mueller wants to show he’s not partisan, then issue a report on collusion and obstruction. They will show President Trump did nothing wrong. Then we will have to admit you were fair. And we will.”

August 22, 2018 at 11:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rudy Giuliani told the Washington Post that he believes special counsel Robert Mueller “might be at the end” of his investigation after his prosecutors won a conviction against Paul Manafort on eight counts against him.

Trump Calls Mueller’s Team a ‘National Disgrace’

August 20, 2018 at 8:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump stepped up his twitter attacks on special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Said Trump: “Disgraced and discredited Bob Mueller and his whole group of Angry Democrat Thugs spent over 30 hours with the White House Councel [sic], only with my approval, for purposes of transparency.”

He added: “Anybody needing that much time when they know there is no Russian Collusion is just someone … looking for trouble. They are enjoying ruining people’s lives and REFUSE to look at the real corruption on the Democrat side – the lies, the firings, the deleted Emails and soooo much more! Mueller’s Angry Dems are looking to impact the election. They are a National Disgrace!”

Trump’s Epic Mueller Gamble

August 19, 2018 at 9:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Several top White House officials thought then and think now that President Trump made an epic error in rolling over to cooperate with Robert Mueller in the early stages of the special counsel investigation.” Axios reports.

“Trump himself thought then and thinks now that he personally has nothing to lose because he personally did nothing wrong. Who’s right might very well decide the fate of the Trump presidency.”

“One source close to the Trump team told us the full acquiescence to Mueller was ‘dumb’ and ‘idiotic.'”

Mueller Seen Pushing Past Trump Imposed Deadline

August 15, 2018 at 8:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Special counsel Robert Mueller “doesn’t have to shut down his Russia investigation in the weeks before November’s congressional elections despite claims by President Trump’s lawyers that he faces a September 1 deadline, according to current and former U.S. officials,” Bloomberg reports.

“Mueller can continue his closed-door inquiries, and even issue new indictments up to and after the November 6 voting, without violating a Justice Department policy against actions intended ‘for the purpose of affecting any election,’ they said, asking not to be identified discussing investigative matters.”

“That’s at odds with repeated assertions by Trump’s lawyers.”
