Democrats Boycott Votes on Two Trump Nominees

January 31, 2017 at 11:35 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In a surprise turn of events, Senate Democrats announced Tuesday morning that they are boycotting a committee vote on two of President Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees, drawing fury from Republicans across the aisle,” CNN reports.

“The Senate Finance Committee was set to vote on the nominations of Rep. Tom Price to lead the Department of Health and Human Services and Steve Mnuchin for Treasury Secretary. But minutes after the vote was scheduled to take place, Democrats on the panel convened an impromptu news conference to announce that they refused to participate in the proceeding, all as their Republican colleagues were waiting in a hearing room down the hallway.”

Price Got ‘Privileged’ Offer for Stock in Company

January 30, 2017 at 4:19 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) “got a privileged offer to buy a biomedical stock at a discount, the company’s officials said, contrary to his congressional testimony this month,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The shares were discounted 12% off the traded price in mid-June only for investors who participated in a private placement arranged to raise money to complete a clinical trial. The company’s shares have tripled since the offering.”

Price Proposed Another Bill to Benefit His Investments

January 24, 2017 at 8:50 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Three months after investing in four companies with manufacturing plants in Puerto Rico, President Donald Trump’s pick for Health and Human Services secretary introduced legislation that would directly benefit those companies,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The proposed House legislation by Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) — which would have made permanent an expiring tax deduction for Puerto Rican facilities — didn’t pass… The bill nevertheless marks another instance in which Mr. Price was involved in legislation that could have benefited his stock holdings.”

Price Admits to Trading on Inside Information

January 18, 2017 at 2:34 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Tom Price (R-GA), President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Department of Health and Human Services, admitted that he decided to buy stock in an Australian biotech firm after receiving information from Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY), a board member of that company, the Huffington Post reports.

“Ethics experts stated that Price could be in violation of the STOCK Act, a bipartisan 2012 law that bans insider trading by members of Congress.”

— Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), quoted by the New York Times, slamming Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) for saying that Americans would have “access” to health care insurance under a Trump administration.

Schumer Says Price May Have Broken the Law

January 17, 2017 at 12:13 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) told CNN that Donald Trump’s pick to quarterback the replacement of Obamacare, Tom Price, might have broken the law with a questionable stock purchase.

Said Schumer: “If he knew about it, it could very well be a violation of the law. Now they say there’s a broker, it’s kind of strange that this broker would pick this stock totally independently of him introducing legislation that’s so narrow and specific to this company.”

Meanwhile, Time reports Price invested in six pharmaceutical companies before Medicare fight.

Price Invested Before Introducing Bill to Help Company

January 16, 2017 at 4:50 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) “last year purchased shares in a medical device manufacturer days before introducing legislation that would have directly benefited the company, raising new ethics concerns for President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Health and Human Services secretary,” CNN reports.

“The new revelation is the latest example of Price trading stock in a health care firm at the same time as pursuing legislation that could impact a company’s share price. The issue has become a major liability for the congressman after The Wall Street Journal reported last month that he traded roughly $300,000 in shares over the past four years in health companies while pursuing legislation that could impact them.”

Trump Gets Serious About Health Care

November 29, 2016 at 8:51 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Klein: “A campaign that was never about policy has morphed into a transition that’s looked like a reality show, if cable news was in charge of the scripts. But with the selection of Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) as HHS secretary, President-elect Donald Trump is giving a solid indication of his policy ambitions in a very big area. Price, an orthopedic surgeon and a savvy political operator, hasn’t just criticized Obamacare, or thought about replacing it in theory: He’s written a bill that’s among the most serious GOP efforts to take Obamacare apart and patch something else together in its place.”

“It’s going to come under serious scrutiny for its impact – Price would repeal the Medicaid expansion, and make coverage significantly more expensive for some of those who can least afford it – and it’s not clear how much Trump and his new team are on board for. But for Price, at least, ‘repeal and replace’ is much more than a slogan.”

Trump Eyes Price as Top Health Official

November 28, 2016 at 8:35 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) “appears close to being named secretary of health and human services, and an announcement from Donald Trump’s transition team could come within the next day, according to a dozen Republican sources with knowledge of the plan,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

Price was “one of the only GOP lawmakers to design a replacement plan for the 2010 health care law — a proposal that never received a vote in committee or on the floor of the House.”

Price Likely to Become Next Health Secretary

November 19, 2016 at 11:07 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) “has emerged as the clear front-runner to serve as Donald Trump’s secretary of Health and Human Services, according to several Republican sources close to the transition team,” Politico reports.

“Price, a physician and an ardent opponent of Obamacare, would lead the dismantling of the Affordable Care Act and potentially help Congress enact a new health plan. His selection would be a strong embrace of the House’s effort to repeal and replace Obamacare.”
