A Glimpse at Post-Roe America

May 4, 2022 · 4:00 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “A modern-day adaptation of underground abortion networks that helped people access care when the procedure was illegal, the Auntie Network stands alongside formal organizations like the Brigid Alliance and the National Network of Abortion Funds that coordinate travel and remove financial barriers to getting abortions.”

“But as the prospect of terminating a pregnancy in America faces staunch restrictions in large swaths of the country, the Reddit group offers a glimpse into a post-Roe era when getting an abortion will require an influx of community-based aid to organize and assist.”

Democrats More Fired Up Over Abortion Than GOP

May 4, 2022 · 2:14 pm ET · Leave a Comment

A new Morning Consult/Politico poll finds abortion-rights supporters are more galvanized than opponents by the prospect of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

That trend reverses more than a decade of polling that showed Republicans have been more motivated by the abortion issue.

Overturning ‘Roe’ Is Radical, Not Conservative

May 4, 2022 · 11:00 am ET · Leave a Comment

Bret Stephens: “A half-century is a long time. America is a different place, with most of its population born after Roe was decided. And a decision to overturn Roe — which the court seems poised to do, according to the leak of a draft of a majority opinion from Justice Samuel Alito — would do more to replicate Roe’s damage than to reverse it.”

“It would be a radical, not conservative, choice.”

“What is conservative? It is, above all, the conviction that abrupt and profound changes to established laws and common expectations are utterly destructive to respect for the law and the institutions established to uphold it — especially when those changes are instigated from above, with neither democratic consent nor broad consensus.”

“This is partly a matter of stare decisis, but not just that. As conservatives, you are philosophically bound to give considerable weight to judicial precedents, especially when they have been ratified and refined — as Roe was by the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey decision — over a long period. The fact that Casey somewhat altered the original scheme of Roe, a point Justice Alito makes much of in his draft opinion, doesn’t change the fact that the court broadly upheld the right to an abortion. ‘Casey is precedent on precedent,’ as Justice Kavanaugh aptly put it in his confirmation hearing.”

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) pledged to call a special legislative session if Roe v. Taking Away Rights

May 4, 2022 · 7:57 am ET · Leave a Comment

Ruth Marcus: “The court has overruled decisions before, but it has never removed an existing, established constitutional right. Now, we have every reason to believe it is prepared to do so, and in a way that would give states maximum leeway. If the draft becomes the law of the land, state legislatures will be free to restrict all abortion, in almost all circumstances.”

Minority Women Have Most to Lose in Abortion Ruling

May 4, 2022 · 7:41 am ET · Leave a Comment

“If you are Black or Hispanic in a conservative state that already limits access to abortions, you are far more likely than a white woman to have one,” the AP reports.

“And if the U.S. Supreme court allows states to further restrict or even ban abortions, minority women will bear the brunt of it.”
