Trump May Hold Rally During Biden’s Inauguration

November 28, 2020 at 7:43 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In the twilight of his presidency, Donald Trump is discussing different ways to disrupt the impending Joe Biden era, chief among them by announcing another run against him,” the Daily Beast reports.

“According to three people familiar with the conversations, the president, who refuses to acknowledge he lost the 2020 election as he clearly did, has not just talked to close advisers and confidants about a potential 2024 run to reclaim the White House but about the specifics of a campaign launch. The conversations have explored, among other things, how Trump could best time his announcement so as to keep the Republican Party behind him for the next four years. Two of these knowledgeable sources said the president has, in the past two weeks, even floated the idea of doing a 2024-related event during Biden’s inauguration week, possibly on Inauguration Day, if his legal effort to steal the 2020 election ultimately fails.”

GOP Moves to Brand Biden as President of the Elite

November 27, 2020 at 8:09 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President-elect Joe Biden, a state-college graduate who was once the poorest man in the U.S. Senate, is facing accusations of elitism from Republicans after defeating a billionaire incumbent with an Ivy League degree — a sign of how the politics of populism have been upended and redefined by President Trump,” the Washington Post reports.

“In recent days, Republican lawmakers have sought to describe Biden’s early Cabinet selections as well-heeled and well-pedigreed but out of touch with the kinds of problems facing everyday Americans.”

“After Biden won the presidency in part by claiming a larger share of college-educated suburban voters, some of his GOP foes see his early moves as an opportunity to brand him as an elitist president catering to the nation’s coastal professionals at the expense of its heartland laborers.”

Biden Weighs Retired General as Defense Chief

November 27, 2020 at 4:46 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Joe Biden is considering retired four-star General Lloyd Austin as his nominee for defense secretary, adding him to a shortlist that includes Jeh Johnson, Tammy Duckworth and Michele Flournoy,” Axios reports.

“A nominee for Pentagon chief was noticeably absent when the president-elect rolled out his national security team Tuesday. Flournoy had been widely seen as the likely pick, but Axios is told other factors — race, experience, Biden’s comfort level — have come into play.”

“Biden’s top advisers feel pressure to announce an African American to a prominent Cabinet role.”

A Smaller Thanksgiving

November 26, 2020 at 8:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jill and Joe Biden writing for CNN:

“This year, our turkey will be smaller and the clatter of cooking a little quieter. There will be no family walks in the cold or playful bickering amongst the grandkids. Like millions of Americans, we are temporarily letting go of the traditions we can’t do safely.”

“It is not a small sacrifice. These moments with our loved ones — time that’s lost — can’t be returned. Yet, we know it’s the price of protecting each other and one we don’t pay alone. Isolated in our own dining rooms and kitchens, scattered from coast to coast, we are healing together.”

Biden Leans Towards Donilon as CIA Director

November 25, 2020 at 7:12 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President-elect Joe Biden is leaning toward naming former Obama administration national security adviser Tom Donilon as his CIA director,” Politico reports.

“The choice for the spymaster role is one of the toughest facing Biden as he puts together his national security team. The CIA has found itself uncomfortably embroiled in domestic politics under Donald Trump, accused by the outgoing president and his allies of seeking to tar him as an agent of Moscow and representing a “deep state” bent on undermining his policies. Whomever Biden picks will also confront an emboldened Russia and an increasingly aggressive China, along with transnational threats like climate change and pandemics.”

Fauci Expects Role In Biden’s Coronavirus Response

November 25, 2020 at 3:52 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, told McClatchy that he expects a role in the incoming administration and would serve in a senior position if called upon by President-elect Joe Biden.

“Fauci said he assumes he will stay in his job as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a position he has held since 1984. But he would ‘seriously consider’ serving in another capacity, such as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or as secretary of Health and Human Services, if Biden asked.”

Janet Yellen Will Face Her Most Political Job Yet

November 25, 2020 at 11:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Ms. Yellen’s resume was a draw for Mr. Biden. No past Treasury secretary has served both as leader of the Federal Reserve, which she did from 2014 to 2018, and head of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, her job from 1997 to 1999 in the Clinton administration.”

“Yet her previous experiences with Washington politics were insulated by comparison with the task at hand. Compared with the Treasury Department, the Fed is a cloistered and academic institution. At Treasury, politics is often one of the first considerations.”

Moseley Braun Stumps for Interior Post

November 25, 2020 at 9:49 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun (D-IL) is interested in being President-elect Joe Biden’s Interior secretary, telling the Washington Post the position is “just a natural fit for me.”

The Hill: “The former Illinois lawmaker, who also served as ambassador to New Zealand in the late 1990s following her single Senate term, would be an unusual choice to lead the Interior Department given her lack of experience on environmental issues.”

Biden Mulls Two for Health Secretary

November 25, 2020 at 6:38 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy have emerged as top contenders to be President-elect Joe Biden’s health secretary, with Hispanic advocacy groups making a strong push for Lujan Grisham.”

“The nomination of Lujan Grisham, 61, would continue a tradition of presidents tapping governors to lead the sprawling Department of Health and Human Services, and make her the first Latina ever nominated for the post. Murthy, a 43-year-old Yale-educated internist who’s grown close to Biden as a top adviser on the coronavirus pandemic, would be the first nominee of Indian descent for the department’s top job.”

“Either would face potentially tough confirmation hearings as the Biden administration begins coordinating one of the largest immunization programs in history — and confronts the economic fallout of a pandemic that’s left tens of millions of people out of work and uninsured. The next secretary will play a key role in managing the Covid-19 response, and convincing a fatigued and distrustful public to buy into the tough public health measures needed to suppress the virus.”

Progressives Seek to Block Bruce Reed

November 24, 2020 at 5:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar are boosting a petition against Joe Biden nominating his former chief of staff to a new role in his administration, calling Bruce Reed a ‘deficit hawk’ and criticizing his past support for Social Security and Medicare cuts,” Axios reports.

“Progressives are mounting their pressure campaign after the president-elect did not include any of their favored candidates in his first slate of Cabinet nominees, and they are serious about installing some of their allies, blocking anyone who doesn’t pass their smell test — and making noise if they are not heard.”
