Shooter Charged with Trying to Assassinate Trump

Cole Tomas Allen, the suspect in the White House correspondents’ dinner shooting on Saturday, made his first appearance in federal court in D.C. on Monday, the Washington Post reports.

He was charged on three counts: attempting to assassinate the president, transporting a firearm and ammunition with intent to commit a felony, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.”

Shooting Suspect Was Targeting Trump

“The suspected gunman who fired shots Saturday outside the White House Correspondents’ dinner was targeting President Trump and administration officials, according to a 1,000-word document the authorities have tied to the man, 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, Calif,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The gunman appeared to be acting alone, and had a shotgun, handgun and knives on him, officials said. Cole was a guest at the hotel where the dinner was taking place, and in the document he outlined security breaches that he said made getting firearms into the building easier than he expected.”

“Former senior intelligence and FBI officials who are cooperating with the U.S. Justice Department’s criminal probe into whether former CIA Director John Brennan lied to Congress were subpoenaed over the weekend to testify before a grand jury in Washington, D.C.,” CBS News reports.

“The subpoenas went out shortly after the Justice Department appointed conservative Trump ally Joe DiGenova to formally take over the criminal investigation into Brennan after the career prosecutor handling the case was removed late last week.”

Former Virginia Lt. Governor and Wife Found Dead

Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax (D) and his wife, Cerina, were found dead by police in their home early Thursday morning in an apparent murder-suicide, the Washington Post reports.

In 2019, Fairfax faced sexual assault allegations dating to 2000 and 2004.

He denied the accusations and ran in the Democratic primary for governor in 2021, coming in fourth.

“Michael Avenatti — the blustery lawyer who repped Stormy Daniels in her lawsuit against Donald Trump and then went to prison for ripping her and other clients off — is now a free man. Well, sort of,” TMZ reports.

“Avenatti is not a fully free man. He’s been ordered to serve more time in a halfway house in Hollywood. He’s also required to participate in mental health treatment and stay away from unlawful controlled substances. His projected release date is September 2028.”

Georgia GOP Official Voted Illegally 9 Times

“A judge ruled this week that a top Georgia Republican Party official, who has promoted former President Donald Trump’s claims of widespread voter fraud affecting the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, has repeatedly voted illegally,” NBC News reports.

“Brian Pritchard, first vice chairman of the Georgia Republican Party and a conservative talk show host, was fined $5,000 for voting illegally and registering to vote while serving a sentence for a felony conviction. Pritchard was also ordered not to commit further violations, to face public reprimand for his conduct and to pay the State Election Board’s investigative costs.”
