“Nearly five years after Joe Arpaio was voted out as sheriff of Arizona’s most populous county, taxpayers are covering one of the last major bills from the thousands of lawsuits the lawman’s headline-grabbing tactics inspired,” the AP reports.

“The payout takes to $100 million the attorney fees, settlements and other costs the county has paid from lawsuits stemming from Arpaio’s six terms over things such as jail deaths, failed investigations of the sheriff’s political enemies and immigration raids of businesses.”

“A notorious Russian cybercriminal group has posted what appear to be National Rifle Association files to the dark web,” NBC News reports.

“The group, known as Grief, posted 13 files to its website Wednesday and claimed to have hacked the NRA. It is threatening to release more of the files if not paid, though it did not publicly state how much.”

Pew Research: “The share of adults who say spending on policing in their area should be increased now stands at 47%, up from 31% in June 2020. That includes 21% who say funding for their local police should be increased a lot, up from 11% who said this last summer.”

“Support for reducing spending on police has fallen significantly: 15% of adults now say spending should be decreased, down from 25% in 2020.”

A man charged in the attack on a police officer amid the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol, called his conduct “unequivocally an aberration” and that he was “consumed by the mob mentality,” the Buffalo News reports.

Said Thomas Sibick: “January 6th was a disgrace to our nation that left a scar Trump is ultimately responsible for, but we are strong and will heal from it. While many praise Trump I loathe him.”

“California has given away at least $20 billion to criminals in the form of fraudulent unemployment benefits, state officials said Monday, confirming a number smaller than originally feared but one that still accounts for more than 11% of all benefits paid since the start of the pandemic,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“State officials blamed nearly all of that fraud on a hastily approved expansion of unemployment benefits by Congress that let people who were self-employed get weekly checks from the government with few safeguards to stop people who were not eligible to receive them.”

Kansas state Sen. Gene Suellentrop (R) “will spend two days in jail for a wild wrong-way drunken ride down Interstate 70 in Topeka this spring after pleading no contest Monday to driving under the influence and reckless driving,” the Kansas City Star reports.

“He would have been forced to leave office if found guilty of a felony. By pleading no contest to the misdemeanor charges, Suellentrop neither admitted nor disputed the charges against him.”

When Suellentrop was arrested in March, he called the police officer “donut boy.”

“As the House investigation into the Jan. 6 attack heats up, some of the planners of the pro-Trump rallies that took place in Washington, D.C., have begun communicating with congressional investigators and sharing new information about what happened when the former president’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol,” Rolling Stone reports.

“Two of these people have spoken to Rolling Stone extensively in recent weeks and detailed explosive allegations that multiple members of Congress were intimately involved in planning both Trump’s efforts to overturn his election loss and the Jan. 6 events that turned violent.”

“Rolling Stone separately confirmed a third person involved in the main Jan. 6 rally in D.C. has communicated with the committee. This is the first report that the committee is hearing major new allegations from potential cooperating witnesses. While there have been prior indications that members of Congress were involved, this is also the first account detailing their purported role and its scope. The two sources also claim they interacted with members of Trump’s team, including former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, who they describe as having had an opportunity to prevent the violence.”

Minnesota state Sen. Mark Koran (R) promoted a fundraiser for several constituents who are charged with participation in the deadly January 6 attack on the US Capitol, saying they come from a “good family,” The Guardian reports.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told The View that she wept during the deadly insurrection at the Capitol on January 6.

Said Rice: “I thought: ‘I study countries that do this.’ I didn’t think it would happen in my own country.”

She added that it “was wrong” but then said it’s time for lawmakers to “move on.”

“An Army reservist charged in the Justice Department’s sweeping investigation of the U.S. Capitol riot was quietly demoted and discharged earlier this year, becoming the first known service member to be forced out of the military after officials learned of an alleged involvement in the Jan. 6 insurrection,” the Washington Post reports.

In addition to the earlier raid of Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska’s home in Washington, D.C., FBI agents in New York City were also searching a townhouse in Manhattan’s West Village neighborhood in connection with the same investigation, ABC News reports.

The New York Times confirms the New York City townhouse is also owned by Deripaska.

FBI agents swarmed the home of Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska in Washington D.C. Tuesday, NBC News reports.

“Some of the defendants charged in the storming of the U.S. Capitol are turning away defense lawyers and electing to represent themselves, undeterred by their lack of legal training or repeated warnings from judges,” the AP reports.

“That choice already has led to some curious legal maneuvers and awkward exchanges in court.”
