Wall Street Journal:  “Two websites created in recent months and whose operators are believed to have ties to the Russian government now serve as portals for leaking sensitive and at times embarrassing information about the Democratic Party and its supporters.”

“Some computer experts and Democrats in Congress believe both websites—the Guccifer 2.0 WordPress page and DCLeaks.com—have ties to Russian intelligence services and that the sites are using hacked information to try to influence the November elections.”

“A Russian cyberattack that targeted Democratic politicians was bigger than it first appeared and breached the private email accounts of more than 100 party officials and groups,” the New York Times reports.

“The widening scope of the attack has prompted the F.B.I. to broaden its investigation, and agents have begun notifying a long list of Democratic officials that the Russians may have breached their personal accounts.”

Playbook: “There is a serious, palpable fear among Democrats right now that WikiLeaks will release a raft of new, damning emails that will help boost Donald Trump this fall.”

Josh Barro: “Many of the conservatives who watched with dismay as the Republican Party nominated Donald Trump have now watched with amazement as Democrats co-opted some of Republicans’ favorite themes at the Democratic National Convention.”

“Democrats’ thinking was clear: We’re the only political party left for grown-ups, so we’d better make sure we have something to offer voters on both sides of the aisle.”

“There was a clear choice about tone, especially on the last two days of the convention: Speakers would not mock conservatives for getting into bed with Donald Trump. They would mock Trump and make the case that conservatives should be embarrassed and ashamed that their party nominated him — and should look across the aisle at a party that shares more of their goals and values than they may have realized.”

First Read: “Hillary Clinton’s speech Thursday accepting her party’s presidential nomination was OK; she is never going to rhetorically outshine President Obama or her husband Bill Clinton. But what she and Democrats did achieve was produce a powerful convention that contrasted with Donald Trump’s last week in Cleveland.”

“While the GOP convention had high-profile no-shows (the Bushes, Mitt Romney, John Kasich) and a speech by a candidate who didn’t endorse Trump (Ted Cruz), the Democrats trotted out Obama, Bill Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, First Lady Michelle Obama, and yes Bernie Sanders, who all testified on Hillary Clinton’s behalf. While the GOP convention focused on police, the Democrats featured both police and the mothers of Trayvon Martin and Sandra Bland. And while the GOP convention highlighted the violence that immigrants had committed and Benghazi, the Democrats introduced Khizr Khan, the father of a Muslim-American Army captain, who delivered arguably the week’s most stinging critique against Trump.”

“In totality, the Democratic convention itself was flawless — with two exceptions: 1) the Debbie Wasserman Schultz mess; and 2) the few dozen Sanders delegates who disrupted Clinton last night. Taken together, the two conventions matched the persona of their nominee: Cleveland was chaotic; Philadelphia was disciplined.”

“President Obama’s prime time speech lifted the Democratic convention to its third straight night of ratings wins over the Republican convention last week — and now the Trump campaign is exhorting supporters not to watch the Democrats’ final night,” CNN reports.

“Overnight Nielsen ratings indicate that Wednesday night’s DNC viewership was about 15% higher than last Wednesday night’s coverage of the RNC… The Democratic ratings advantage has come as something of a surprise, given Donald Trump’s reputation as a ratings magnet.”

“The Democratic party has yet to notify thousands of wealthy donors whose email addresses and other personal information have been exposed by a pernicious cyber-intrusion, including Hollywood stars, CEOs and some of America’s super rich,” ABC News reports.

Many of them are “listed on a massive spreadsheet the party called the ‘Big Spreadsheet of All Things,’ which appears to list data about every check written to the party, Hillary Clinton and President Obama going back to 2013. The file includes email addresses, phone numbers, and in some cases additional personal information not publicly available on FEC reports. Under FEC rules, contributors are required to reveal the amounts of their gifts and provide a mailing address, but not email or phone contact information.”

Open Secrets: “Email exchanges involving top officials at the Democratic National Committee released along with private documents by WikiLeaks show that DNC officials hoped to reward top donors and insiders with appointments to federal boards and commissions in coordination with the White House.”

“The revelations give an inside look into how the Democratic Party attempted to leverage its access and influence with the White House to bring in cash.”

“Philadelphia is buzzing with speculation that the Democratic National Committee will have to fire a slate of senior aides after WikiLeaks released 20,000 emails, some of which showed the party attempting to boost Hillary Clinton over her campaign rival Bernie Sanders. But Donna Brazile, the incoming interim chairman of the DNC, pushed back on that narrative in a Playbook interview, saying that no members of the party’s staff have offered to resign and she wouldn’t consider accepting any resignations until next week.”

Democrats will try to move past the controversy of their ousted party chair with speeches from Sen. Bernie Sanders, Michelle Obama and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Politico: “Trouble started early Monday, when Wasserman Schultz’s debut at the convention proved disastrous… There were also signs that Sanders’ supporters will not be accepting Clinton’s nomination quietly — and that Sanders’ camp was not actively trying to shut down some disturbances.”

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz told the Sun Sentinel that she won’t gavel her party’s national convention to order on Monday afternoon.

Said Wasserman Schultz: “I have decided that in the interest of making sure that we can start the Democratic convention on a high note that I am not going to gavel in the convention.”

She added: “I stepped down the other day because I wanted to make sure that having brought us to this momentous day and to Philadelphia and planned the convention that is going to be the best one that we’ve ever had in our party’s history that this needs to be all about making sure that everyone knows that Hillary Clinton would make the best president.”

James Hohmann: “The Democratic National Convention was supposed to be the flawless, slickly-produced one where the establishment struck back. Now, it threatens to devolve into a mess, maybe not as untidy as Cleveland but probably not the celebratory coronation that the Hillary Clinton campaign has spent the seven weeks since California’s primary trying to orchestrate.”

“Stepping on the message of unity and competence, Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned under pressure Sunday. She was forced aside after the emergence of thousands of internal emails that angered various constituencies within the party.”

“But the Florida congresswoman did not go quietly or without a fight. It took pressure from the White House – including a phone call with President Obama – to get her to finally see the writing on the wall. Two reliable sources say Wasserman Schultz was trying to make top aides take the fall, rather than take personal responsibility. Until the end, she struggled to understand what a lightning rod she’s become.”

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz was repeatedly interrupted and booed as she sought to speak to Florida’s delegation, The Hill reports.
