Climate-Linked Ills Threaten Humanity

September 5, 2023 · 3:41 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Pakistan is the epicenter of a new global wave of disease and death linked to climate change,” according to a Washington Post analysis.

“This examination of climate-fueled illnesses — tied to hotter temperatures, and swifter passage of pathogens and toxins — shows how countries across the globe are ill-prepared for the insidious, intensifying risks to almost every facet of human health.”

Republicans Asked if They Believe in Climate Change

August 24, 2023 · 7:34 am ET · Leave a Comment

“It was an unusual litmus test for a Republican primary debate, one that quickly descended into personal attacks and obfuscation: The candidates were asked whether humans had contributed to climate change,” the New York Times reports.

“There is no scientific dispute that the answer is yes, but hardly any of the Republican candidates gave a straight answer.”

Judge Rules in Favor of Montana Youths in Climate Case

August 14, 2023 · 2:50 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“In the first ruling of its kind nationwide, a Montana state court decided Monday in favor of young people who alleged the state violated their right to a ‘clean and healthful environment’ by promoting the use of fossil fuels,” the Washington Post reports.

“The court determined that a provision in the Montana Environmental Policy Act has harmed the state’s environment and the young plaintiffs, by preventing Montana from considering the climate impacts of energy projects. The provision is accordingly unconstitutional, the court said.”

“The win, experts say, could energize the environmental movement and reshape climate litigation across the country, ushering in a wave of cases aimed at advancing action on climate change.”

Arizona Republicans Won’t Talk About Climate Change

August 9, 2023 · 9:00 am ET · Leave a Comment

Politico: “With extreme and growing heat waves almost certainly fueled by climate change, Arizona might, in theory, be the kind of place where lawmakers grapple with this new reality. But the politics of climate change are just as paralyzed here as the rest of the country. Or perhaps it’s even worse.”

Biden to Create Grand Canyon National Monument

August 4, 2023 · 3:16 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“President Biden is leaning toward designating a vast area near the Grand Canyon as a national monument to safeguard it from uranium mining,“ the Washington Post reports.

“Leaders of local tribes and environmentalists have spent years lobbying to protect areas near the park from potential uranium mining, which they say would threaten aquifers and water supplies. They have asked Washington to double the protected area around the canyon by including 1.1 million acres of public lands in a Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument.”

Antarctica Is Missing 1 Million Square Miles of Ice

July 30, 2023 · 1:02 pm ET · Leave a Comment

CNN: “The sea ice has not returned to anywhere near expected levels. In fact it is at the lowest levels for this time of year since records began 45 years ago. The ice is around 1.6 million square kilometers (0.6 million square miles) below the previous winter record low set in 2022.”

“In mid-July, Antarctica’s sea ice was 2.6 million square kilometers (1 million square miles) below the 1981 to 2010 average. That is an area nearly as large as Argentina or the combined areas of Texas, California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado.”

Republicans Propose Planting One Trillion Trees

July 18, 2023 · 3:00 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “The idea — simple yet massively ambitious — revealed recent Republican thinking on how to address climate change. The party is no longer denying that global warming exists, yet is searching for a response to sweltering summers, weather disasters and rising sea levels that doesn’t involve abandoning their enthusiastic support for American-produced energy from burning oil, coal and gas.”

Floods, Fires and Deadly Heat Are Alarm Bells

July 13, 2023 · 7:27 am ET · Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Scientists say there is no question that this cacophony was caused by climate change — or that it will continue to intensify as the planet warms. Research shows that human greenhouse gas emissions, particularly from burning fossil fuels, have raised Earth’s temperature by about 1.2 degrees Celsius (2.2 Fahrenheit) above preindustrial levels. Unless humanity radically transforms the way people travel, generate energy and produce food, the global average temperature is on track to increase by more than 3 degrees Celsius (5.4 Fahrenheit), according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — unleashing catastrophes that will make this year’s disasters seem mild.”

“The only question, scientists say, is when the alarms will finally be loud enough to make people wake up.”

Meanwhile, a study in Nature Medicine finds that more than 61,000 people died because of last year’s brutal summer heat waves across Europe.

John Kerry Visit to China Could Jumpstart Climate Talks

July 11, 2023 · 8:51 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The Biden administration’s full-court press on climate change cooperation with Beijing could hinge on climate envoy John Kerry’s upcoming visit to China,” Axios reports.

“The U.S. and China are the world’s top two emitters of planet-warming greenhouse gases. Climate action between them could help to achieve global climate goals and pave the way for smoother negotiations at the COP28 summit in the United Arab Emirates later this year.”

It’s Toxic Slime Time on Florida’s Lake Okeechobee

July 10, 2023 · 11:57 am ET · Leave a Comment

“For thousands of years, Lake Okeechobee pumped life into Florida’s swampy interior. Summer rains swelled the shallow inland sea, creating seasonal overflows that sustained the Everglades and its alligators, panthers, spoonbills and snail kites,” the New York Times reports.

“But a vast re-engineering over the past century has transformed Okeechobee into something life-threatening as much as life-giving. Toxic algal blooms now regularly infest much of its 730-square-mile surface during the summer, producing fumes and waterborne poisons potent enough to kill pets that splash in the contaminated waters, or send their owners to the doctor from inhaling the toxins.”

Earth Entering Uncharted Territory

July 6, 2023 · 10:58 am ET · Leave a Comment

“A remarkable spate of historic heat is hitting the planet, raising alarm over looming extreme weather dangers — and an increasing likelihood this year will be Earth’s warmest on record,” the Washington Post reports.

“New precedents have been set in recent weeks and months, surprising some scientists with their swift evolution: Historically warm oceans, with North Atlantic temperatures already nearing their typical annual peak; unparalleled low sea ice levels around Antarctica, where global warming impacts had, until now, been slower to appear; and the planet experiencing its warmest June ever charted, according to new data.”

“And then, on Monday came Earth’s hottest day in at least 125,000 years. Tuesday was hotter.”
