Wonk Wire has a great round up of coverage of the congressionally mandated report released today.

National Journal: “For years, mentions of Earth Day have sprung up each April from members of both parties. In April 2010, Democrats spoke of Earth Day over 150 times, mostly in commemoration of its 40th anniversary. But no Republican has uttered the words “Earth Day” on the House or Senate floor since 2010.”

Wonk Wire notes a new report found Fox News only accurate 28% of the time on climate change.

Wonk Wire notes that 10,883 out of 10,885 scientists disagreed with you last year.

“In the summer of 2010, it was Harry Reid, the Senate’s Democratic leader, who squelched his party’s efforts to pass a climate change bill, declaring it could never attract enough votes to pass. In the years since, he has rarely spoken publicly about the issue,” the New York Times reports.

“But on Monday night, an impassioned Mr. Reid took to the Senate floor to kick off a nearly 15-hour climate-change talkathon by about 30 Senate Democrats, part of a campaign by a new Senate “climate caucus” to make it a politically urgent issue.”

Roll Call: “Thirty Senate Democrats are scheduled to stage an all-night talkathon to address climate change and its deniers, but notably missing from the extensive roster of speakers are moderate Democrats, especially those who are up for re-election in 2014.”

“Arguing that we need more carbon dioxide, not less, in the atmosphere,” Utah state Rep. Jerry Anderson (R) “has proposed legislation that would limit the state’s ability to regulate emissions of the greenhouse gas,” the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Said Anderson: “We are short of carbon dioxide for the needs of the plants. Concentrations reached 600 parts per million at the time of the dinosaurs and they did quite well. I think we could double the carbon dioxide and not have any adverse effects.”

“A billionaire retired investor is forging plans to spend as much as $100 million during the 2014 election, seeking to pressure federal and state officials to enact climate change measures through a hard-edge campaign of attack ads against governors and lawmakers,” the New York Times reports.

“The donor, Tom Steyer, a Democrat who founded one of the world’s most successful hedge funds, burst onto the national political scene during last year’s elections, when he spent $11 million to help elect Terry McAuliffe governor of Virginia and millions more intervening in a Democratic congressional primary in Massachusetts. Now he is rallying other deep-pocketed donors, seeking to build a war chest that would make his political organization, NextGen Climate Action, among the largest outside groups in the country, similar in scale to the conservative political network overseen by Charles and David Koch.”

Wonk Wire: Belief in climate change depends on the previous day’s weather.

Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) said that global climate change could have an upside for his state, the Bangor Daily News reports.

Said LePage: “Everybody looks at the negative effects of global warming, but with the ice melting, the Northern Passage has opened up. So maybe, instead of being at the end of the pipeline, we’re now at the beginning of a new pipeline.”

“The Northeast Passage, also known as the northern sea route, is a maritime route through the Arctic Circle that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, providing a shortcut from the U.S. East Coast to Asia — and all the markets therein — that shaves 40 percent off the distance of the traditional route through the Mediterranean Sea and the Suez Canal.”

Ruby Cramer and Evan McMorris-Santoro report that Al Gore’s climate change group, which was supposed to revolutionize the movement, has shrunk considerably in the last six years — down in employees, contributions, and expenditures.

“The numbers, according to a review of the nonprofit’s tax filings, show the change has been severe. In 2009, at its peak, Gore’s group had more than 300 employees, with 40 field offices across 28 states, and a serious war chest: It poured $28 million into advertising and promotion, and paid about $200,000 in lobbying fees at the height of the “cap and trade” energy bill fight on Capitol Hill.”

“Today, the group has just over 30 people on staff and has abandoned its on-the-ground presence — all of its field offices have since shut down — in favor of a far cheaper digital advocacy plan run out of Washington. Advertising expenses have decreased from the millions to the thousands, and the organization no longer lobbies lawmakers.”

— Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), quoted by Tulsa World, adding that he thinks the evidence points that the Earth is moving into a “mini-ice age.”

“As she marveled at the site of a shrinking Alaska glacier, the newly installed leader of the Environmental Protection Agency said that the president told her that fighting climate change should be her primary focus,” the Anchorage Daily News reports.

Said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy: “The president’s main priority for me was to recognize when I was coming in here that this is going to be a significant challenge and one in which the administration was going to begin to tackle.”

“I think it’s arrogant that we think as people that we can somehow change the climate of the whole earth when science is telling us that there’s a cycle to all this. And that cycle was occurring before the industrial revolution and I suspect will occur way into the future.”

Wonk Wire: Obama returns solar panels back to the White House.

President Obama said the Keystone XL pipeline “should be approved only if it doesn’t ‘exacerbate’ carbon pollution, as he unveiled a sweeping new plan to tackle climate change,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

In a closely watched speech, Obama “also said he would direct the Environmental Protection Agency to create carbon standards for both new and existing power plants, one of the largest sources of greenhouse-gas emissions in the U.S.”
