A Few Thoughts for the End of the Week

December 2, 2022 at 9:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Several readers have asked me to write about Sam Bankman-Fried and the epic collapse of his cryptocurrency exchange FTX.

Since Bankman-Fried was once worth more than $25 billion and became a top Democratic donor — and a secret Republican donor as well — there’s certainly a political angle to the story.

Biden Challenges His Base

November 30, 2022 at 1:45 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

On the first Labor Day after he took office, President Biden promised to be “the most pro-union President leading the most pro-union administration in American history.”

He did so while crediting organized labor with his 2020 victory: “It’s not hyperbole, it’s a fact!”

There Was a Conspiracy to Overthrow the Government

November 30, 2022 at 11:06 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

With a jury yesterday finding two people guilty of seditious conspiracy, that establishes the fact that a conspiracy existed.

The verdicts are a big deal politically. They underline the gravity of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. It was far from a “normal tourist visit” as some Republicans have ridiculously maintained.

The Week Ahead

November 28, 2022 at 9:58 am EST By Peter Orvetti Leave a Comment

Turkey was for last week. This week, Congress digs in on a feast of lame duck.

The Senate is back Monday for action on the Respect for Marriage Act, which passed a test vote 62-37 before the break. It should pass by Thursday, codifying same-sex marriage protections into federal law. But while this landmark step, with bipartisan support, would have been unfathomable just two decades ago, it may be the easiest part of the lame duck session.

For members: The new issue of Ballot Access News.

“Never in history has the electoral college damaged the Republican Party. In 1876, 1888, 2000, and 2016, the Democratic Party presidential nominee won the most popular votes but still lost the presidency.”

Trump Had a Very Bad Day in Court

November 22, 2022 at 5:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In just a few hours, Donald Trump lost at the Supreme Court and saw his lawyers face a very skeptical panel of judges on the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.

It must be hard for Trump to focus on his new presidential campaign.

Donald Trump Is a Loser

November 19, 2022 at 3:16 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

When Donald Trump entered the Republican presidential primary in 2015, he was mocked by Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, no major donors supported him and establishment Republicans wanted nothing to do with him.

That’s exactly how his entry into the 2024 presidential race was greeted.

A Few Thoughts for the End of the Week

November 18, 2022 at 9:36 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

I recently checked my spam folder and found more than 2,000 emails sent by a disgruntled reader over the last two years.

The reader claimed over and over that Political Wire‘s coverage was misleading and that a giant “red tsunami” was coming. He promised Republicans would rack up massive majorities and that I was ignoring the “correct” polls. He sent links to fringe websites to back up his claims.

Kevin McCarthy’s Raucous Caucus

November 17, 2022 at 4:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Here’s what Rep. Kevin McCarthy (D-CA) is about to find out: A simple majority and a governing majority are not the same thing.

That’s assuming McCarthy can even wrangle the 218 votes he needs to be elected Speaker on January 3 — not a sure thing at this point.
