The Week Ahead

January 22, 2023 at 5:51 pm EST By Peter Orvetti Leave a Comment

The Republican National Committee will gather in Dana Point, California, to choose between Harmeet Dhillon, Mike Lindell, and current chair Ronna McDaniel to lead the party for the next two years. Though McDaniel says more than 100 of the 168 voting RNC members are behind her, and Dhillon publicly claims just 28 backers, the campaign has been bitter and personal.

Donald Trump, who has done little since declaring his 2024 presidential candidacy more than two months ago, will travel to South Carolina on Saturday for his first major public event of the campaign. But while Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) — who once called Trump a “race-baiting, xenophobic bigot” and said the GOP should tell Trump “to go to hell” — will attend to offer Trump a de facto endorsement, other major Palmetto State Republicans like Nikki Haley and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) are considering their own presidential bids.

Brace Yourself for the Hearings on Biden’s Documents

January 20, 2023 at 9:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The White House wants you to believe that an aide to then-Vice President Joe Biden inadvertently packed some classified documents which were then transported to his home and private office at the University of Pennsylvania.

That may be exactly what happened. But here’s what a third or more of the country will believe soon:

The New Republican Tax

January 18, 2023 at 10:34 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) confirmed to Politico that Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) promised a floor vote on his proposed Fair Tax Act.

The bill abolishes the IRS and streamlines the tax code by replacing income taxes with a national consumption tax.

There’s Nothing ‘Conservative’ About the Freedom Caucus

January 17, 2023 at 11:06 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

If you pay strict attention to what House Freedom Caucus members say they want, you might see why they’re so angry.

Over the last 40 years, the Republican Party has completely failed in its promise to make government smaller.

The Week Ahead

January 15, 2023 at 4:40 pm EST By Peter Orvetti Leave a Comment

President Biden marked the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., at King’s Ebenezer Baptist Church on Sunday, and will mark the Monday national holiday commemorating King’s birth with Al Sharpton at the National Action Network Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Breakfast in Washington.

The events grant Biden a brief respite from the growing calls from Democrats for the White House to be more forceful and transparent in discussing the recent discoveries of classified documents at Biden-associated properties.

Two Things Can Be True at the Same Time

January 12, 2023 at 2:49 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Some news reports of the classified documents found at Joe Biden’s home and office are implying that it’s similar — or even the same — as the case of classified documents found at Donald Trump’s beach club. It’s lazy reporting at best.

The two episodes are obviously very different:

It’s Easier for Democrats to Stick Together Now

January 11, 2023 at 9:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The last two years showed how hard it is to govern.

With very narrow majorities in the House and Senate, Democrats had to carefully balance competing interests — from Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) on the right to the House Progressive Caucus on the left — to cobble together the votes to actually pass legislation.

When Will Kevin McCarthy Be Forced Out?

January 9, 2023 at 11:32 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

At first glance, there seems to be little consensus from Political Wire members about when Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) might be forced out of his job.

The chart slightly peaks around September when the U.S. is expected to hit the federal debt ceiling.

The Week Ahead

January 8, 2023 at 6:23 pm EST By Peter Orvetti Leave a Comment

Now comes the hard part.

After going 15 rounds to limp into the speaker’s chair shortly after midnight on Saturday, Kevin McCarthy must now try to lead a House Republican majority that is both narrow and bitterly divided. The House convenes at 5:00 p.m. on Monday for an uncertain vote on the rules package McCarthy hammered out with Freedom Caucus rebels.

How Long Will Kevin McCarthy Last as Speaker?

January 8, 2023 at 11:29 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) made massive concessions to a group of 20 Republican holdouts in order to finally secure the votes he needed for the gavel in the 15th round of voting. We still don’t know everything he promised.

As a result, he’s likely to be dramatically weaker than his predecessors.
