A Long History of Scientific Mistrust

March 9, 2021 · 3:00 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Michael Gerson: “From the mid-19th to the early 20th centuries, evangelicals developed a strained relationship with modern science. Geology revealed ancient fossils and an old Earth. Biology traced the course of human evolution. Cosmology attributed the beginnings of an expanding universe to a Big Bang.”

“For many evangelical believers, the scientific description of reality did not look like the universe of their imagination. The scientific profession became an object of suspicion. And this distrust was only exacerbated by a resurgence of fundamentalism in the late 20th century.”

What Fuels Skeptics of Science

March 3, 2021 · 4:00 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Vox: “There is reason to think that many so-called ‘skeptics’ aren’t experiencing doubt at all. Instead, says Robbie Sutton, a social psychologist at the University of Kent who studies belief in conspiracy theories, studies have shown that people who question scientific conclusions are often motivated by a range of religious, economic, political, and personal convictions.”

“Evolution skepticism, for example, is more common among people who have strong beliefs about the relationship between God and humans. Climate change skepticism, by contrast, may be camouflaging resistance to climate action: In one 2014 study, Republicans expressed less skepticism about climate change when they were presented with free market solutions like technological innovation compared to traditionally liberal solutions like emissions restrictions. This wasn’t climate skepticism, the researchers concluded, but ‘solution aversion.’”

NASA Rover Expected to Land on Mars

February 18, 2021 · 3:30 pm ET · Leave a Comment

The Perseverance rover is expected to set down on Mars at 3:55 pm ET.

Fox Orlando: “It will take the rover seven minutes to get through the atmosphere, speeding at 12,000 miles per hour, before touching down on the Red Planet. Astronomers call that the ‘seven minutes of terror.’ Officials believe those minutes will be excruciating as they await confirmation of a safe landing.”

White House Sidelines Key Climate Scientist

November 10, 2020 · 7:12 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The White House has removed the scientist responsible for the National Climate Assessment, the federal government’s premier contribution to climate knowledge and the foundation for regulations to combat global warming, in what critics interpreted as the latest sign that the Trump administration intends to use its remaining months in office to continue impeding climate science and policy,” the New York Times reports.

Scientific American Endorses Joe Biden

September 15, 2020 · 11:44 am ET · Leave a Comment

Scientific American made its first-ever presidential endorsement:

Scientific American has never endorsed a presidential candidate in its 175-year history. This year we are compelled to do so. We do not do this lightly.

The evidence and the science show that Donald Trump has badly damaged the U.S. and its people—because he rejects evidence and science. The most devastating example is his dishonest and inept response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which cost more than 190,000 Americans their lives by the middle of September. He has also attacked environmental protections, medical care, and the researchers and public science agencies that help this country prepare for its greatest challenges. That is why we urge you to vote for Joe Biden, who is offering fact-based plans to protect our health, our economy and the environment. These and other proposals he has put forth can set the country back on course for a safer, more prosperous and more equitable future.

During President Trump’s briefing on the west coast wildfires, California Natural Resources chief Wade Crowfoot emphasized that climate change was exacerbating the crisis:

TRUMP: It’ll start getting cooler, you just watch.

CROWFOOT: I wish science agreed with you.

TRUMP: I don’t think science knows actually.

Philip Bump: The president who says the coronavirus will go away makes the same prediction about global warming.

Trump Adds Adviser Who Mimics His Unscientific Claims

August 12, 2020 · 12:30 pm ET · Leave a Comment

President Trump added a new adviser on the coronavirus pandemic, CNN reports.

Dr. Scott Atlas “frequently appears on Fox News and has advised Republicans in the past. And crucially, unlike the government’s medical experts who have advised Trump until now, has adopted a public stance on the virus much closer to Trump’s — including decrying the idea that schools cannot reopen this fall as ‘hysteria’ and pushing for the resumption of college sports.”

Said Trump: “He’s working with us and will be working with us on the coronavirus. And he has many great ideas. And he thinks what we’ve done is really good, and now we’ll take it to a new level.”

Silent Spread of Virus Keeps Scientists Grasping

July 22, 2020 · 7:28 am ET · Leave a Comment

“One of the great mysteries of the coronavirus is how quickly it rocketed around the world,” the AP reports.

“It first flared in central China and, within three months, was on every continent but Antarctica, shutting down daily life for millions. Behind the rapid spread was something that initially caught scientists off guard, baffled health authorities and undermined early containment efforts — the virus could be spread by seemingly healthy people.”

“As workers return to offices, children prepare to return to schools and those desperate for normalcy again visit malls and restaurants, the emerging science points to a menacing reality: If people who appear healthy can transmit the illness, it may be impossible to contain.”

Rancor Between Scientists and Trump Grows

July 17, 2020 · 9:02 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“This week’s remarkable character assault by some top White House advisers on Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious-disease expert, signified President Trump’s hostility toward medical expertise and has produced a chilling effect among the government scientists and public health professionals laboring to end the pandemic, according to administration officials and health experts,” the Washington Post reports.

“As novel coronavirus cases surge out of control coast to coast, the open rancor between the scientific community and a White House determined above all to resuscitate the economy and secure a second term for Trump threatens to further undermine the U.S. response, which already lags behind those of many other developed nations.”

‘Science Should Not Stand in the Way’

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters that President Trump wants schools to open “and when he says open, he means open and full, kids being able to attend each and every day.”

Said McEnany: “The science should not stand in the way of this,” before quickly adding, “the science is on our side here.”

Weather Agency Violated Scientific Integrity Policy

In a long-awaited report, an investigation conducted on behalf of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found that agency leadership violated its scientific integrity policy through actions that led to the release of a statement that backed President Trump’s false statement about the path of Hurricane Dorian, the Washington Post reports.

The scandal over the forecast for Hurricane Dorian has come to be known as “Sharpiegate,” after President Trump modified a NOAA forecast map shown in an Oval Office briefing to depict the storm threatening Alabama.

Space X to Launch Astronauts

May 27, 2020 · 2:30 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Today at 4:33 ET — but only if the weather in Florida cooperates — two NASA astronauts plan to strap themselves into a capsule atop a SpaceX rocket and travel to space, Nature reports.

“If the launch succeeds, it will mark a number of firsts in human spaceflight. It will be the first time a private company has flown humans to orbit, and the first time astronauts have launched from US soil since NASA retired the Space Shuttle in 2011. Perhaps most significantly, it is the first time in 17 years that anyone has launched a new type of spaceship to carry humans to Earth orbit.”

You can watch live streams now from both NASA and Space X.

Update: The launch was scrubbed until May 30.

Democrats Lean Into Science

May 10, 2020 · 11:29 am ET · Leave a Comment

CNN: “Democrats and Republicans with medical backgrounds have long used their MDs to convey competency, compassion and a commitment to service when running for Congress. But Democrats, especially, think the coronavirus pandemic has become a strong proof point in their argument that the defense of science can be a winning campaign message — and some party strategists think that’s given candidates with scientific backgrounds an advantage.”

“They’re drawing contrasts between their candidacies and the GOP — namely the President and the down-ballot Republicans who have mostly stood by him.”

Scientists Overruled In Push to Restart Fever Screenings

May 10, 2020 · 7:35 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The White House is pushing a return to its failed experiment in relying on temperature screening of air travelers to detect coronavirus despite vehement objections from the nation’s top public health agency,” internal documents obtained by USA Today show.

“The discord underscores the administration’s disregard for science and the diminished standing of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at a moment when local governments, businesses and community leaders are seeking direction on how to reopen safely.”
