Gowdy Says Trump Should Let Himself Be Indicted

May 30, 2019 at 11:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) told Fox News that President Trump should consider opening himself up to being indicted for obstruction of justice.

Said Gowdy: “I’d take my chances with 12 reasonable minded fellow citizens than I would the House Democrats.”

He added: “You can waive any right you have. You have the right to remain silent, but you can talk to the police if you want to. You have a right to a jury trial, but you can plead guilty if you want to. I’ll bet the president has a right to say, go ahead, indict me. If you have enough — the Supreme Court’s never said that I can’t be indicted. This is DOJ. I’m the head of DOJ. I run the executive branch. If you have enough to indict me, go ahead and do it. At least you’ll have some clarity.”

How One Political Story Gets Told Differently

When a major news event breaks, it’s often covered by dozens — sometimes hundreds — of outlets. But the framing isn’t the same. Some headlines amplify outrage. Others minimize it. And some stories barely register on one side of the political spectrum at all.

That’s exactly why I chose to partner with Ground News.

As someone who spends every day immersed in political coverage, I wanted a tool that helps cut through narrative spin — not add to it. Ground News makes those differences visible.

For any major story, you can see how many sources are covering it, whether coverage skews left or right, and how headlines change depending on the outlet. Side-by-side comparisons reveal gaps and blind spots you’d otherwise miss.

If you want to understand how political news is being framed — not just what happened — Ground News is genuinely useful.

Impeachment Is Not the Answer

May 30, 2019 at 9:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Frum: “Right now Trump is fighting on many fronts to suppress many investigations of many different forms of alleged wrongdoing. He must plug more holes in the dike than he has fingers. But submerge all those many stories into one big question—“remove or don’t”—and the impeachers will have to focus their energy on the most salient allegations. The battlefront will narrow, and as it narrows, the unity of the executive branch will confer a tactical advantage on even a weak presidential defense over the fissiparous offense in the House of Representatives.”

“Impeachment at this point is all but certain to end in Trump’s acquittal in the Senate… It will change only if new real-world facts materialize—either legal facts (evidence of other crimes) or political facts (a collapse in Trump’s support in the country).”

“A Trump facing impeachment will rally reluctant Republicans to him, with the argument, so effective for Bill Clinton in the 1990s, Even if he did something wrong, it does not merit removal from office.“

Trump Slams ‘Highly Conflicted’ Mueller

May 30, 2019 at 8:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump tweeted that he “had nothing to do with Russia helping me get elected” while slamming special counsel Robert Mueller again.

Tweeted Trump: “The Greatest Presidential Harassment in history. After spending $40,000,000 over two dark years, with unlimited access, people, resources and cooperation, highly conflicted Robert Mueller would have brought charges, if he had ANYTHING, but there were no charges to bring!”

Axios: “While it’s not the first time Trump has admitted that Russia interfered in 2016, it’s the first time Trump has stated it could have helped him win.”

Washington Heard Two Different Things from Mueller

May 30, 2019 at 6:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “At long last, the sphinx of Washington spoke on Wednesday, and here is what President Trump heard: ‘Case closed.’ Here is what the president’s adversaries heard: ‘Time to impeach.'”

“The much-anticipated public debut of Robert Mueller as special counsel proved as polarizing and unsatisfying as almost everything else about the two-year investigation he led into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election in support of Mr. Trump’s candidacy.”

Misjudging Mueller

May 30, 2019 at 6:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “At the end of the day, all Robert Mueller really did was reiterate what was in Volume II of his report: He wasn’t allowed to indict the president for anything, so the special counsel’s office didn’t consider it. To the extent that he leaned into the idea of impeachment, all he did was note the fact that it was up to others — i.e., Congress — to figure that out.”

“Maybe Robert Mueller is exactly who we thought he was: someone who follows rules to the letter, and views his mission in the narrowest terms possible. And maybe folks on the left are investing too much of their hopes in a guy who just doesn’t want the entire weight of American democracy on his shoulders — and never has.”

The Atlantic: “Wednesday’s press conference was consistent with Mueller’s image as a classic just-the-facts-ma’am G-man, a persona that frustrates anti-Trump partisans who dreamed of him as an avenging superhero.”

Christie Says Mueller Clearly Contradicted Barr

May 29, 2019 at 2:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Gov. Chris Christie (R) said that special counsel Robert Mueller contradicted Attorney General William Barr in comments earlier that morning, The Hill reports.

Said Christie: “Those comments by Bob Mueller about the other processes — obviously impeachment being the only constitutional way — definitely contradicts what the attorney general said when he summarized Mueller’s report and said he then had to draw the conclusion on that. Mueller clearly contradicts that today in a very concise way.”

Mueller Won’t Comment Beyond Report

May 29, 2019 at 11:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Special counsel Robert Mueller publicly stated that he will not speak beyond what’s contained in his report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Said Mueller: “The report is my testimony.”

New York Times: “Mueller reemphasized the report’s main findings, including that there was not enough evidence to prove a criminal conspiracy with Russia’s interference and that he made no decision on possible obstruction of justice because of a Justice Department policy on not indicting sitting presidents.”

Mueller also announced his retirement from the Justice Department.

May 29, 2019 at 7:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Four months before a Chinese woman was accused of lying to get into Mar-a-Lago, an 18-year-old college freshman in November fooled Secret Service agents into thinking he was a club member and wandered the grounds for 20 minutes before he was arrested.,” the Palm Beach Post reports.

“An apologetic Mark Lindblom on Tuesday told a federal magistratethat he had no evil intentions when he decided to try and enter the club on the day after Thanksgiving while President Donald Trump and his family were visiting. The Washington, D.C. teenager said he just wanted to see if he could do it.”

Democrats Take Trump On Over Deferments

May 28, 2019 at 9:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump, who has touted himself as an unmatched ally of military veterans, is facing pointed new attacks from Democratic presidential candidates who question his medical deferment from service in Vietnam — and, in turn, his patriotism and integrity,” the Washington Post reports.

“Leading the assault are two military veterans: Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA). They have offered searing assessments of Trump, accusing the president of faking a disability and forcing another American of Trump’s generation to risk his life in the jungles of Southeast Asia.”

‘The President Is a Liar’

May 28, 2019 at 5:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

James Comey: “It is tempting for normal people to ignore our president when he starts ranting about treason and corruption at the FBI. But we shouldn’t, because millions of good people believe what a president of the United States says.”

“In normal times, that’s healthy. But not now, when the president is a liar who doesn’t care what damage he does to vital institutions. We must call out his lies that the FBI was corrupt and committed treason, that we spied on the Trump campaign, and tried to defeat Donald Trump.”

Trump Moves Ahead to Commandeer July 4th Festivities

May 28, 2019 at 12:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

ABC News: “While details of the president’s event have yet to be finalized, the White House is facing pushback over the security, logistical and financial strains a presidential event would add on a day where additional security protocols already are in place for the hundreds of thousands expected to flock to the Mall to picnic and watch fireworks.”

“In addition to a presidential address, the administration has ordered that the location of the fireworks display be moved. A source familiar with planning said there have also been talks about adding additional military elements to the regular Fourth of July parade, while the president’s orders for a separate, grand military parade remain on perpetual delay.”
