Idaho Republicans Kill Presidential Caucus

January 5, 2014 at 12:38 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The presidential caucus system established by the Idaho Republican Party in 2012 to give the state more say in the selection of a presidential candidate was killed by the Republican State Central Committee, the Idaho State Journal reports.

Josh Putnam: “Idaho Republicans are now without a specific means of allocating delegates in 2016. The presumption — the intent — is that Republicans in the Gem state will simply revert to their later primary election. That may be the eventual course of action, but as a part of the transition to caucuses in 2012, the Idaho state legislature permanently removed the presidential primary line from the May primary ballot.”

Quote of the Day

January 5, 2014 at 12:14 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I don’t know. I wish I could go back and turn back the clock and take another try.”

— Mitt Romney, in an interview on Fox News, when asked if he felt he would have won the 2012 presidential election if President Obama had not lied about Americans being able to keep their health insurance.

January 5, 2014 at 12:09 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Jim Greer, the disgraced former chairman of the Florida GOP, is now selling La-Z-Boy recliners for $8 an hour plus commission at an Orlando-area furniture store as part of a prison work release program,” the Orlando Sentinel reports.

“Greer still has seven months left on his prison sentence for stealing $125,000 from the state GOP.”

January 5, 2014 at 12:02 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) “said he was not currently considering an elimination of the filibuster for legislation, but he warned that the country could not remain ‘paralyzed’ by Republican obstruction,” The Hill reports.

Said Reid: “We’re not there yet. No, I’m not thinking about that today.”

Revolving Door Turns Again

January 5, 2014 at 12:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As of this week, nearly 250 former congressional employees can legally begin lobbying their former colleagues, the Sunlight Foundation‘s post-employment lobbying tracker reveals. Included in that list are 71 former members of Congress, some of whom already have secured berths at K Street influence shops even before they were legal to lobby. (House members must wait one year after leaving office before embarking on a lobbying career; for former senators, the cooling-off period is two years.)”

Cuomo Set to Loosen Marijuana Laws

January 4, 2014 at 11:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Joining a growing group of states that have loosened restrictions on marijuana, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York plans this week to announce an executive action that would allow limited use of the drug by those with serious illnesses,” the New York Times reports.

“The shift by Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat who had long resisted legalizing medical marijuana, comes as other states are taking increasingly liberal positions on it — most notably Colorado, where thousands have flocked to buy the drug for recreational use since it became legal on Jan. 1.”

Lawmaker Erased Family from His Biography

January 4, 2014 at 10:40 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After Bill Young died Oct. 18 at 82, he was given a funeral befitting a legend. Speakers — including House Speaker John Boehner and high-ranking military officials — praised his skills at crafting legislation and advocating for his constituents,” the Tampa Bay Times reports.

“There was a second theme amid the accolades: Bill Young, family man.”

“A lengthy photo montage showed the congressman with the three sons (one adopted) and eight grandchildren who resulted from his marriage to Beverly. But no one mentioned the three children, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren from his marriage to the former Marian Ford. Nor were any of those family members included in the photo presentation.”

Actor Steven Seagal told KNXV-TV that he is considering a run for Arizona governor.

Campaign Fundraisers Get Creative

January 4, 2014 at 10:32 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Los Angeles Times: “Forget the chicken dinner, the rubbery staple of the political fundraising circuit… The push to be creative and different — did we mention the food truck serving lobster or the trip to the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race? — grows out of the fierce competition for limited campaign dollars, reflected by the more than two dozen invitations that some Washington lobbyists say arrive in the mail every day.”

“This being Washington, politicians, as always, are looking for ways to stand out.”

An Insult Running for Senate

January 4, 2014 at 10:29 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) “might be the closest thing in this election year to a middle finger running for the U.S. Senate by itself,” the Washington Post reports.

“This man is running for the Senate in a state with 26 million people. By conventional measures, he is not doing it well. One recent poll had him down by 44 points… But Stockman seems to be betting — again — on his talents for nation-scale insult comedy, for grabbing free publicity with over-the-top attacks on the hard right’s enemies.”

Obama Finally Gets a Vacation

January 4, 2014 at 10:26 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Air Force One was barely off the ground for the 10-hour flight when White House aides began making bold predictions: They expected no urgent news to break during the trip. And this year — for the first time since Mr. Obama took office and began making a regular Christmas sojourn to Hawaii, where he lived as a teenager — they were right.”

“Mr. Obama’s winter vacation has often been delayed, cut short or interrupted by the demands of the Oval Office — in 2009 by the fight over the health care law, in 2010 by the question of extending President George W. Bush’s tax cuts and in 2011 by the extension of unemployment insurance and a reduction in payroll taxes. (Mr. Obama was also in Hawaii in 2009 when a terrorist tried to bring down a trans-Atlantic flight bound for Detroit with a bomb concealed in his underwear.)”

Washington Post: “America’s 50th state, and its most isolated and exotic paradise, is not only the president’s birthplace and holiday getaway. It’s also his political utopia, which has embraced policies that have been coldly received on the mainland.”

The Other NRA

January 3, 2014 at 11:40 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“If you ask most Americans about the NRA, they will think of the National Rifle Association. But another powerful industry trade group bearing those initials, the National Restaurant Association, conducts its own campaign of duplicitous lobbying and outright deception at the expense of the public interest,” Al Jazeera reports.

“Restaurants employ more than 13 million workers, so it is no surprise that industry lobbyists are paid a lot of money to ensure this workforce remains disempowered. The NRA, which has a staff of 750 people, spent more than $4 million in 2012 alone currying favor in Washington, D.C. But with recent fast-food strikes and restaurant workers increasingly speaking out against low wages and other forms of labor exploitation, the mask of the other NRA is slowly peeling away.”

The Senate Will Only Get More Polarized

January 3, 2014 at 8:19 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ron Brownstein: “It’s too early to confidently predict which party will hold the U.S. Senate after the November election. But it’s a safe bet the next Senate will more closely reflect the nation’s entrenched red-blue presidential divide. And that’s a recipe for even more polarization and gridlock.”

“This year’s races will likely provide more evidence of voters’ growing inclination to support Senate candidates from the same party as that of their presidential choice. This has made it much tougher than a generation ago for either party to elect senators from states that typically back the other side in presidential elections.”

“The tightening correlation between presidential and Senate voting represents a back-to-the-future trend in national politics. Through the first half of the 20th century, party-line voting was common. After Franklin Roosevelt’s first two victories in 1932 and 1936, for instance, Democrats held 89 percent of the Senate seats in the 40 states that supported him both times.”

Obama’s Priorities Face Early Tests in Congress

January 3, 2014 at 8:09 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The start of 2014 brings two quick tests of President Barack Obama’s ability to move his agenda through Congress, as the White House tries to persuade lawmakers to restore recently expired unemployment benefits and to increase the nation’s borrowing limit,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The Senate is expected to hold an initial vote as soon as Monday on a plan to renew expanded jobless benefits, which Mr. Obama supports. And within the next couple of months, lawmakers must grapple again with terms for raising the debt ceiling.”

Access to Abortion Falling

January 3, 2014 at 8:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A three-year surge in anti-abortion measures in more than half the states has altered the landscape for abortion access, with supporters and opponents agreeing that the new restrictions are shutting some clinics, threatening others and making it far more difficult in many regions to obtain the procedure,” the New York Times reports.

“Advocates for both sides are preparing for new political campaigns and court battles that could redefine the constitutional limits for curbing the right to abortion set by the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and later modifications by the Supreme Court.”
