Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo (D) issued an executive order to eliminate the word “plantations” from state documents, symbols and related government websites.
The state seal currently includes a golden anchor along with the word “hope” and the phrase “the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.”

Goddard earned degrees from Vassar College and Harvard University. He lives in New York with his wife and three sons.
