Deal Reached on January 6 Commission

House Homeland Security Chair Bennie Thompson (D-MS) announced that he’s reached a deal with Republicans over an independent commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection.

  • There will be 10 people on the commission, five appointed by Democrats and five appointed by Republicans.
  • Commission members can’t be in government and must have experience in law enforcement, civil liberties and intelligence.
  • The panel will have subpoena power.
  • It will be disbanded at the end of the year.
This is interesting: House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy says he did not sign off on the commission.
