My dear mother-in-law, Lucy Waring, passed away early this morning.
Lucy was one of the most unique people I’ll ever know. She saw things in the world that most of us ignore. It was not unusual for her stop in the middle of a street to observe the pattern on a manhole cover or take a photo of a rusted piece of metal because she loved the color. Her perspective lives on forever in her art.
Lucy saw so much of the world too. She grew up abroad as a Navy brat, raised her four daughters in Southeast Asia and spent the last thirty years living in London and then New York City. She embraced the many ways people lived and celebrated humanity’s diversity.
And Lucy absolutely adored animals. It was not uncommon for her to have multiple dogs, cats and even birds in her home. Her beloved Peggy the Pitbull died just a few weeks ago, seemingly a signal that it was OK to finally let go herself after several years of illness.
Sara lost her mother today and our three boys lost their grandmother. And I lost a friend who showed me a world that was bigger and more interesting than I ever imagined.
