“During an absolute blizzard of other news on Friday afternoon, two Republican lawmakers—Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York and Sen. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming—announced they would not seek re-election next year,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“That brings the total number of lawmakers who aren’t running for re-election to 52, according to Ballotpedia. The most in any election cycle since 2012 are the 54 who retired in 2018. This Congress is likely to surpass that total, perhaps by a huge margin (a lot of lawmakers will chat about their political futures over the holidays with family and, well, the tide seems to be going out, not coming in).”
