Postcard from the Gobi

July 22, 2026 · 7:00 am ET · Leave a Comment

There are few places left on Earth that still feel like the middle of nowhere. Mongolia’s Gobi Desert is one of them.

The landscape stretches endlessly in every direction, interrupted only by the occasional herd of wild horses, a caravan of camels or a traditional ger camp.

With one of the lowest population densities anywhere in the world, it’s the rare place where silence is definitely part of the experience.

We even spent our nights sleeping in a traditional ger, the round felt tents that have sheltered Mongolian nomads for centuries.

We rode Bactrian camels across the dunes, tried our hand at Mongolian archery and explored the landscape on horses.

We also visited ancient petroglyphs—stone carvings created roughly 5,000 years ago—that offer a remarkable glimpse into the lives of the people who once inhabited this harsh landscape.

The Gobi isn’t just sand in the way most of us imagine a desert. It’s a vast mix of rocky plains, dramatic cliffs and grasslands that once supported dinosaurs.

The Flaming Cliffs are where some of the world’s most important fossil discoveries—including the first dinosaur eggs ever found—were unearthed, and it’s impossible not to imagine what roamed this terrain millions of years before humans left their marks on the rocks.

It’s a reminder that while the modern world feels increasingly crowded and connected, there are still places where distance, history and nature overwhelm everything else.
