Both Parties See Wide-Open House Map

October 8, 2026 · 5:50 am ET · Leave a Comment

“With just under a month to go until Election Day, financial decisions made by both parties appear to suggest the question being asked is not if Democrats take control of the House, but how large the majority may be,” NPR reports.

“Currently, Republicans hold a narrow 218-214 seat advantage. In February 2025, the Cook Political Report’s initial ratings for the midterms found a small slice of 39 races listed as competitive, with 18 classified as ‘toss-ups.'”

“That topline number has shifted, with Cook currently listing 43 districts as competitive, including 22 toss-ups. But beyond that, under the hood, Democratic and Republican groups are marshalling hundreds of millions of dollars to influence an electoral landscape that is much larger.”

Democrats Make Corruption a Campaign Focus

October 8, 2026 · 5:49 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Across the country, Democrats running to flip some of the nation’s most high-profile House seats this cycle are offering a similar pitch: Vote for me to clean up corruption in Washington,” MS NOW reports.

“While the specifics may vary, candidate after candidate is offering their own plans to rein in malfeasance. Most hit on similar themes: ban stock trading by members of Congress, bar corporate dollars in politics, impose term limits — even on members of the Supreme Court — and restrict members of Congress from becoming lobbyists.”

“It’s part of a larger trend this cycle, with Democrats making corruption a central tenet of their ads and campaign messaging, often incorporating it into their broader argument about addressing the cost of living.”

Trump Hopes Voters Will Reward His Support for Columbus

October 8, 2026 · 5:47 am ET · Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Trump on Friday will host a celebration of the Italian explorer at the White House, highlighted by his installation of a 13-foot Columbus statue on the presidential grounds.”

”The event is timed ahead of Columbus Day, a holiday that Trump vowed to resurrect ‘from the ashes’ after years of historians and politicians rethinking the legacy of Columbus, whose 1492 arrival in the Caribbean set the stage for colonization and enslavement.”

Italy Weighs Giving Bonus Seats to Election Winners

October 8, 2026 · 5:45 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Italian lawmakers on Thursday prepared to vote on a controversial new law that would award bonus seats in Parliament to election winners, a move supporters say will help prevent governments from collapsing and detractors denounce as unconstitutional and antidemocratic,” the New York Times reports.

“Championed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has threatened to resign should it not pass, the new law would give a bonus to the winning party or coalition of an election: 70 seats in the lower house of Parliament and 35 in the Senate, provided the party or coalition reaches 42 percent in both houses.”

The White House Has Unleashed RFK Jr.

“Consider Robert F. Kennedy Jr. unleashed,” the Washington Sun reports.

“Muzzled earlier this year by White House officials uneasy with the health secretary’s fringier views, the Trump administration is now trying to leverage Kennedy and his Make America Healthy Again movement for Republicans ahead of the midterm elections.”

Trump and Paxton Make for an Awkward Pair

October 8, 2026 · 5:31 am ET · Leave a Comment

“President Trump held a rally in San Antonio, Texas, Wednesday night to help out the Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton, whose race has gone wobbly with less than a month to go before the midterm elections,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Trump was in fighting form, tossing out red meat reminders to Texans about why they voted for him in 2024. He was interrupted nearly a dozen times by protesters, several of whom were led out in handcuffs. He talked a lot about the border, and Democrats, and himself.”

“What he didn’t talk a lot about was Ken Paxton.”

What Six Years of Inflation Mean for the Midterms

October 8, 2026 · 5:26 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Four years ago, in the run-up to the last midterm elections, prices were rising more than twice as quickly as they are now. President Trump has repeatedly reminded voters of the 2022 inflation rate, blaming high prices on his predecessor,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“But Americans, weary from six years of quickly rising prices that have eaten away at their paychecks, might blame Republicans anyway as they head to the polls next month.”

“Inflation sits at about 3.4%, far lower than its recent peak in 2022, when it topped 9%. Yet that means prices are still rising, adding to the higher costs consumers have absorbed in previous years. All kinds of everyday goods are 30% more expensive than they were in 2020.”

Can Democrats Win in Iowa?

October 8, 2026 · 5:23 am ET · Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “In the midst of a brutal political environment for Iowa Republicans, Josh Turek is within striking distance of becoming the first Democrat to win a Senate election here since 2008.”

”A Democratic flip in Iowa was practically unthinkable at the start of the cycle. President Donald Trump was fresh off a 13-point win in the Hawkeye State. Republicans control all the key statewide offices and dominate the legislature.”

”But in the two years since his return to the Oval Office, Iowa voters have soured on Trump’s economy and the Iran war. The dismal economic outlook has created an opening for a Turek victory, which would boost Democratic chances of winning back control of the Senate.”

Key Takeaways from Midterm Campaign Advertising

“Campaign ads are all about the economy. Republicans highlight immigration and social issues in commercials more than Democrats. But they rarely mention President Donald Trump,” the Washington Post reports.

Schumer’s Leadership Chances Are Better Than Ever

October 8, 2026 · 5:08 am ET · Leave a Comment

“It wasn’t long ago that Chuck Schumer was the most vilified man in the Democratic Party, but his political fortunes have boomeranged, and he appears on track to become the elected Senate leader again, barring a massive Democratic underperformance,” the Washington Sun reports.

“Last fall, the New York senator faced intense backlash from angry Democrats who felt he wasn’t doing enough to stand up to Donald Trump as leader of the opposition in the Senate. Many wanted him to step aside and make way for someone new.”

“Now, with most polls pointing to a blue wave in the November midterm elections, Democrats are on the verge of something many believed near impossible: a majority in the upper chamber next year, thanks in part to Schumer’s strong fundraising efforts and successful recruitment of quality candidates in battleground states like North Carolina, Ohio and Alaska.”
