Republicans Doubt Their Big Lame-Duck Ambitions Pan Out

October 13, 2026 · 5:51 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Republicans have had to defer many of their legislative dreams, hoping the post-election release of political pressure could set up a productive ‘lame duck’ session before a new Congress is seated,” Politico reports.

”Fat chance, many GOP lawmakers now say.”

“Beyond the uncertainties surrounding the midterms and a potential transition of power on Capitol Hill, members will return to Washington facing a considerable list of must-pass bipartisan bills but also potentially messy internal leadership fights, a foul national mood and a mere 24 legislative days to get anything done.”

“Drivers in three key swing states are about to see even more billboards blaming President Donald Trump for rising prices, according to details shared first with Semafor,” Semafor reports.

“Home of the Brave is nearly doubling its billboard campaign in Michigan, Ohio, and Iowa, adding $1 million in new billboards on top of the $1.25 million the group already spent.”

“Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a candidate for U.S. Senate, received campaign contributions from the staff or political arms of five organizations with interests in legal matters on which his office weighed in,” the Washington Post reports.

”The size of the contributions varied, with money from some firms or members of their staff totaling tens of thousands of dollars.”

Democrats Eye a Bigger 2028 Battleground Map

October 13, 2026 · 5:47 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Move over Wisconsin and Arizona. With Democrats making Republicans sweat in a host of red-state Senate races, a new batch of swing states may be emerging,” Axios reports.

“Some of the closest Senate races are in Nebraska, Ohio, Texas, Iowa and even Kansas. Sure, this could be a blip — or a reminder that it’s a 50-50 moody nation, even in a bunch of red states.”

”The conditions that helped Barack Obama carry conservative states like Indiana and North Carolina in 2008 — an unpopular war, a bruising economy, an electorate hungry for change — could resonate again in 2028.”

Home Insurance Premiums Jump 46 Percent Since 2021

October 13, 2026 · 5:43 am ET · Leave a Comment

New York Times: “In the angry debate over soaring costs of living this campaign season, the price of keeping a roof overhead — specifically insurance and property taxes — has joined gas, diesel, and groceries as a top voter concern three weeks before the midterm elections.”

“Rising homeowners rates — driven by the fires, hurricanes and tornadoes worsened by climate change — have helped put reliably Republican states like Kansas and Florida onto the battlefield, pushed North Carolina toward the Democrats and roiled Democratic politics in California.”

“Home-insurance premiums have climbed 46 percent since 2021, nearly triple the rate of inflation. One recent survey found that 58 percent of Americans said rising insurance costs would make them more likely to vote.”

“New controversies concerning the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement and foreign lobbying aren’t steering Democrats away from their focus on affordability in the final three weeks before the midterms,” Semafor reports.

Republicans Fear Evangelicals Will Stay Home

October 13, 2026 · 5:40 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Conservative leaders are sounding the alarm that more needs to be done in the final weeks before the midterm elections to educate and mobilize White evangelicals, a critical voting bloc in the president’s coalition,” CNN reports.

”Republicans fear if they stay home, that could hand victories to Democrats in key races across the country with control of Congress at stake.”
