Cleaning House After Kristi Noem

May 14, 2026 at 9:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has embarked on a wholesale effort to clean house at his embattled department, firing officials closely associated with his predecessor’s leadership and reviewing her spending decisions,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Mullin’s moves follow the ouster of former Secretary Kristi Noem, who attracted unflattering attention for her department’s aggressive immigration enforcement—culminating in the killing of two U.S. citizen protesters in Minneapolis—as well as her spending millions on a flashy government-run ad campaign prominently featuring herself.”

Trump-Ordered Citizenship Lists for Voting Are Not Reliable

May 14, 2026 at 9:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Citizenship lists that the Trump administration has ordered be compiled and shared with state election officials this year are likely to be incomplete and unreliable for determining voter eligibility, the Justice Department told a federal judge on Thursday.”

“The admission, in Federal District Court in Washington, came in a lawsuit challenging an executive order President Trump signed in March that would create state registries of citizens using federal data, and require the U.S. Postal Service to regulate mail-in voting.”

Key Jeffries Ally Endorses Aggressive New Maps

May 14, 2026 at 7:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Greg Meeks (D-NY), who has close ties to Hakeem Jeffries, “endorsed carving up majority-minority districts to ensure Democratic redistricting gains ahead of the 2028 elections,” Politico reports.

Said Meeks: “I’m supportive of winning and being in the majority. I think we can do that. I’m supportive of preserving our Democrats in the South, which is important, and I think that we can win and do what we need to do in other districts.”

He added: “Trump changed the rules. I don’t like those rules, but we’re going to do what we have to do to win.”

The Stories Missing From Your Feed

You already know the problem: the same story can look completely different depending on where you read it — and some barely show up at all because algorithms decide what you see.

My goal for Political Wire is to help you get outside those filters — to understand not just what happened, but how it’s being covered and who might be missing it. That’s why I use and recommend Ground News.

It’s an app and website that brings together global news from across the political spectrum, showing each source’s bias, factuality, and ownership.

What I find especially useful is the Blindspot Feed. It highlights stories getting heavy coverage on one side but little on the other — a quick way to see what your usual news diet may be missing.

“The U.S. is taking steps to indict Raúl Castro, the 94-year-old former president of Cuba and brother of Fidel, in connection with the downing of planes 30 years ago,” CBS News reports.

“The potential indictment — which would need to be approved by a grand jury — is expected to focus on Cuba’s deadly 1996 shootdown of planes operated by humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue.”

Kash Patel Went on ‘VIP Snorkel’ at Pearl Harbor

May 14, 2026 at 5:53 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When Kash Patel visited Hawaii last summer, the FBI took pains to note the director was not on vacation, highlighting his walking tour of the bureau’s Honolulu field office and meetings with local law enforcement,” the Associated Press reports.

“Left out of the FBI’s news releases was an exclusive excursion that Patel took days later when he participated in what government officials described as a “VIP snorkel” around the USS Arizona in an outing coordinated by the military. The sunken battleship entombs more than 900 sailors and Marines at Pearl Harbor.”

Supreme Court Upholds Mail Access to Abortion Pill

May 14, 2026 at 5:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CBS News: “The Supreme Court on Thursday maintained mail access to the abortion pill mifepristone, setting aside for now a lower court order that blocked abortion providers from prescribing the widely used drug through telehealth and shipping it to patients.”

“The high court’s unsigned decision ensures that patients nationwide will continue to have broad access to mifepristone while litigation in a challenge to the Food and Drug Administration’s relaxed policy for obtaining the drug brought by the state of Louisiana moves forward.”

Washington Post: Supreme Court temporarily clears way for mail distribution of widely used abortion pill.

U.S. Commander Dismisses Reports of Civilian Deaths

May 14, 2026 at 4:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The senior U.S. officer overseeing combat operations in Iran told the Senate on Thursday that the military had identified only one potential incident in which Iranian civilians were mistakenly killed out of about 13,600 U.S. airstrikes, a statement that human rights groups and some lawmakers said was not remotely credible.”

The Parties Don’t Like Open Primaries

May 14, 2026 at 3:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “In a year when House control could hinge on a handful of races, Republicans and Democrats alike have embraced a win-at-all-costs mentality. An all-out war to redraw House maps has consumed statehouses in recent weeks. But open primaries can impede such partisan gains, because they allow voters across the political spectrum to choose candidates, often resulting in centrist choices.”

“Open primaries, the thinking goes, allow non-party faithful to vote — and run — which increasingly polarized party leaders see as a potential forfeit of power. They also claim that open primaries, and more complicated systems that let voters rank candidates, are confusing and unfairly reduce the influence of loyal party voters.”

May 14, 2026 at 3:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Trump Was Flattering, Xi Was Resolute

May 14, 2026 at 3:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “For President Trump, the first day of his visit to Beijing was all about the personal relationship between him and Xi Jinping, the Chinese leader.”

Said Trump: “You’re a great leader. I say it to everybody.”

“Mr. Xi, unsurprisingly, spent little time on flattery. Once the 21-gun salute and precision-marching by units of the People’s Liberation Army were finished, the disciplined Chinese leader plunged right away into setting boundaries for the two country’s relations.”
