When a producer for Tucker Carlson accused Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) of “spearheading” the effort to derail the short term spending bill, Crenshaw blew up at him: “Yeah or maybe you’re a fucking lying piece of shit because I’m not even on the YES list for the whip team. Never have been. But hey, whatever gets you pathetic bottom feeders your click bait. Fucking incels.”
But His Emails?
Politico: “Trump — who attacked his then-opponent Hillary Clinton over her use of a private email server for official business during his first presidential run — is overseeing a fully privatized transition that communicates from an array of @transition47.com, @trumpvancetransition.com and @djtfp24.com accounts rather than anything ending in .gov, and uses private servers, laptops and cell phones instead of government-issued devices.”
Stephanopoulos Was Repeatedly Warned Before Broadcast
The New York Post reports George Stephanopoulos “was warned” by his executive producer not to accuse Donald Trump of rape before the “This Week” broadcast that got ABC News a defamation suit.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times reports Stephanopoulos signed new deal with ABC News.
Elon Musk Fueled Outrage with Series of False Claims
“A bipartisan deal to avert a government shutdown collapsed Wednesday amid a sustained campaign against the package led by billionaire Elon Musk — one featuring a series of false and misleading statements,” Politico reports.
“Musk used his social network X to stir Republicans into a frenzy over the stopgap spending bill filed the night before by House Speaker Mike Johnson, who was forced by his thin majority to negotiate with Democrats on a resolution that could pass in time to avert a government shutdown that would start 12:01 a.m. Saturday.”
Tim Walz Ices Out His Lieutenant Governor
“Gov. Tim Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan haven’t been seen together publicly in seven weeks and the two aren’t communicating or meeting privately, a rift that coincided with his return from the national campaign,” the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
“The first public indication that something was amiss came just three days after the election. That afternoon, Walz gave his homecoming speech to staff, commissioners and invited DFL guests at Eagan High School. Flanagan wasn’t there and sources with knowledge of the situation said she wasn’t invited.”
Can Mike Johnson Survive As Speaker?
Punchbowl News: “The speaker election is in 15 days. There are members–more than a dozen–who assert that Johnson won’t be the speaker in the next Congress. It’s early. Let’s see how Johnson gets out of this mess.”
Politico: “Rep. Thomas Massie, a frequent Johnson antagonist, on Wednesday became the first Republican to publicly say he will vote against him for speaker on Jan. 3. Other Republicans, including some who previously said they would support him, now won’t commit to backing him, despite Trump endorsing Johnson just over a month ago.”
Washington Post: “Two other GOP members, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive topic, said the question of support for Johnson was likely moot: Based on defections that had yet to become public, Johnson would probably be forced out of the running before lawmakers would have to make up their minds on Jan. 3, the member said.”

Bernie Sanders Blasts ‘President Elon Musk’
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) took aim at tech mogul Elon Musk for saying any lawmaker supporting the newly unveiled end-of-the-year continuing resolution funding deal should be voted out of office, The Hill reports.
Said Sanders: “Democrats and Republicans spent months negotiating a bipartisan agreement to fund our government. The richest man on Earth, President Elon Musk, doesn’t like it. Will Republicans kiss the ring?”
Trump Calls for Abolishing the Debt Ceiling
“President-elect Donald Trump said Thursday that Congress should get rid of the debt ceiling, a day after he came out against a deal reached by congressional lawmakers to fund the government before a shutdown occurs,” NBC News reports.
Trump said getting rid of the debt ceiling entirely would be the “smartest thing Congress could do. I would support that entirely.”
He added: “The Democrats have said they want to get rid of it. If they want to get rid of it, I would lead the charge.”
Elon Musk’s America
“Elon Musk is arguably the most powerful person in business, the most powerful man in media and, at least at this moment, the most powerful man in politics,” Axios reports.
“This much power, across this many pillars of society, is without precedent. Musk yesterday single-handedly, his voice amplified by his daylong bombardment of scores of tweets on his X platform, sank a 1,547-page, bipartisan House spending bill aimed at preventing a government shutdown at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.”
“It’s a breathtaking preview of the new power centers that will rewire Washington beginning with Trump’s inauguration 32 days from now.”
Meanwhile, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) floated Elon Musk as a replacement for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
Josh Hawley Calls for New Leadership in Congress
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) slammed Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) for having “cooked” up a massive year-end spending bill that he claims is full of Democratic priorities and declared: “We need to have a serious look at who is leading this Congress,” The Hill reports.
Said Hawley: “Why would you saddle Donald Trump with this terrible spending bill before he even gets into office? I tell you what, we need to have a serious look at who is leading this Congress, because if this is the best they can do, I mean, it is total incompetence. This is a disaster.”
Appeals Court Strips Fani Willis of Trump Election Case
“The Georgia Court of Appeals ruled on Thursday that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her office should be removed from the 2020 election interference case, a bombshell decision that will upend the last remaining criminal case against incoming President Donald Trump,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
“A panel of three judges, all GOP appointees, concluded that Willis’ onetime romantic relationship with former special prosecutor Nathan Wade constituted a conflict of interest that merited her dismissal from the case.”
U.S. Economic Growth Revised Up in Third Quarter
The U.S. economy grew at a 3.1% annualized pace in the third quarter — stronger than previously thought, Axios reports.
Trump Sets Conditions on Johnson Remaining Speaker
President-elect Donald Trump told Fox News that House Speaker Mike Johnson will “easily remain speaker” for the next Congress if he “acts decisively and tough” and eliminates “all of the traps being set by Democrats” in the spending package.
Said Trump: “Anybody that supports a bill that doesn’t take care of the Democrat quicksand known as the debt ceiling should be primaried and disposed of as quickly as possible.”

Republicans Give Democrats an Early Present
Punchbowl News: “In some ways, this lame-duck drama is the best thing that happened to Democrats — although maybe not the country — since Election Day. A demoralized Democratic Party has been grappling over its failed campaign messaging, pointing fingers at President Joe Biden and wondering whether it can still connect with blue-collar Americans.”
“But after Wednesday’s CR implosion, Johnson and the House GOP Conference are in disarray, with the speaker facing questions over whether he can survive this debacle. Trump is threatening to primary Republicans who don’t vote for a debt-limit increase. And Democratic lawmakers are looking to hype up a rivalry between Trump and mega-billionaire Elon Musk, who spent all day trashing Johnson’s CR plan before the president-elect joined in as well.”
Trump and Musk Unleash a New Kind of Chaos
CNN: “The sabotaging of Johnson’s funding initiative triggered shock and confusion on Capitol Hill. But for many of Trump’s supporters and boosters in the conservative media who are anticipating massive cuts to federal programs, the mayhem is the point. Even if the impasse leads to a damaging government shutdown, that may represent progress for some since the government itself is viewed with disdain on the populist right. And by taking aim at the Washington status quo even before he takes the oath of office, Trump is doing exactly what he said he’d do on the campaign trail.”
“But the sudden imbroglio also highlighted one of the key issues facing Trump in his second term: If he wants to pass his tax cuts, push through his immigration overhauls, defend the country and leave a meaningful legacy, he will have to find some way to govern – even if that draws him into conflict with base voters and MAGA ideologues who seem happy to burn government to the ground.”
How the White House Ran With a Diminished Biden
Wall Street Journal: “To adapt the White House around the needs of a diminished leader, they told visitors to keep meetings focused. Interactions with senior Democratic lawmakers and some cabinet members—including powerful secretaries such as Defense’s Lloyd Austin and Treasury’s Janet Yellen—were infrequent or grew less frequent. Some legislative leaders had a hard time getting the president’s ear at key moments, including ahead of the U.S.’s disastrous pullout from Afghanistan.”
“Senior advisers were often put into roles that some administration officials and lawmakers thought Biden should occupy, with people such as National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, senior counselor Steve Ricchetti and National Economic Council head Lael Brainard and her predecessor frequently in the position of being go-betweens for the president.”
“Press aides who compiled packages of news clips for Biden were told by senior staff to exclude negative stories about the president. The president wasn’t talking to his own pollsters as surveys showed him trailing in the 2024 race.”
