June 30, 2026 at 6:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump announced on Tuesday that the Republican Party would hold an unusual midterm convention in September in Dallas as he seeks to mobilize his party before the fall elections,” the New York Times reports.

“Party conventions are typically held only in presidential election years. But Mr. Trump became enamored with the idea of a splashy midterm convention last year, and party officials have been planning the logistics of the event for months.”

“The convention will be held from Sept. 9-10, Mr. Trump said.”

Americans Remain Gloomy About the Economy

June 30, 2026 at 5:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Americans’ attitudes toward the economy improved slightly this month as gas prices declined, but their outlook is still mostly negative by historical standards,” the Associated Press reports.

“The Conference Board said Tuesday that its consumer confidence index rose 0.6 point to 91.2 in June, a figure that is still below its year-ago reading of 95.2. Consumer attitudes worsened after the Iran war caused oil and gas prices to spike, accelerating inflation and causing Americans’ inflation-adjusted incomes to decline. Before the pandemic, the index regularly topped 120.”

— Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), quoted by Politico, on Rep. Tom Kean (R-NJ) being so secret about his absence from Congress due to a diagnosis of depression.

CIA Reorganization Prioritizes Cyberoperations

June 30, 2026 at 4:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“John Ratcliffe, the CIA director, announced on Tuesday that the agency was reorganizing to ensure that it can adopt technology faster and further develop offensive cyberoperations division,” the New York Times reports.

“He promised that the agency would use new technology more aggressively and take ‘smart risks,’ even as it prioritized human decision making and oversight of artificial intelligence and other innovations.”

“The changes are intended to strengthen the CIA’s ability to collect intelligence by gaining access to additional computer networks or communications, or even just locating additional potential human sources.”

Most Americans Support Birthright Citizenship

June 30, 2026 at 3:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down President Trump’s executive order limiting birthright citizenship, reaffirming the constitutional guarantees that nearly all children born on U.S. soil are citizens,” the New York Times reports.

“The ruling puts the court in line with the views of a majority of Americans, with 55 percent saying they oppose ending birthright citizenship in a Reuters/Ipsos poll taken last week.”

“That support is largely driven by Democrats, 72 percent of whom oppose ending birthright citizenship. They are joined by more than half of political independents, and a sizable 38 percent of Republicans who want to protect the right.”

Amy Coney Barrett Faces Right-Wing Ire

June 30, 2026 at 3:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett faced a torrent of attacks from right-wing commentators after she voted this week to strike down two key pillars of the Trump administration’s agenda, including the effort to end birthright citizenship,” the New York Times reports.

“Prominent GOP officials and pundits cast Justice Barrett’s votes as part of a pattern of betrayal of Mr. Trump and the Republican Party. She has become the Republican-appointed justice most likely to be in the majority in decisions that reach a liberal outcome.”

Mediaite: Steve Bannon shreds Amy Coney Barrett: “Did anybody do any due diligence?!”

Trump Urges Congress to Take up Birthright Citizenship

June 30, 2026 at 3:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump on Tuesday called the Supreme Court ruling upholding birthright citizenship ‘too bad for our country,’ and falsely asserted that Congress could reverse the decision through legislation,” the New York Times reports.

Said Trump: “No long and unwieldy Constitutional Amendment is necessary! Congress should start TODAY to work on ending expensive and unfair to our Country, Birthright Citizenship. They will have my Complete and Total Support!'”

Trump’s July 4th Speech Throws Off Fireworks Timing

June 30, 2026 at 2:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“One big reason why D.C.’s July 4 fireworks show is being pushed later: President Trump is scheduled to give a 45-minute speech on a National Mall stage,” Axios reports.

“With temperatures expected to hit 102 and inauguration-level security on the Mall, every delay ripples through the evening — keeping people in the heat longer, slowing trips home and pushing bedtimes.”

“Yes, but: Trump’s penchant for rollicking speeches makes it hard to pinpoint when the show starts.”

June 30, 2026 at 2:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) lost a critical procedural vote on the floor, leaving them once again unable to bring party-line bills to the floor this week, Punchbowl News reports.

This was the fifth rule that failed this Congress.

Politico: House floor is frozen after GOP holdouts reject Johnson’s election-bill plan.

Ex-Aide Walks Back Claim Clinton Visited Epstein Island

June 30, 2026 at 2:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A longtime aide to Bill Clinton walked back a prior claim that the former president visited Jeffrey Epstein’s island, according to two sources familiar with closed-door testimony on Capitol Hill,” CNN reports.

“Doug Band, the former Clinton aide, is the 17th person to testify behind closed doors as part of the House Oversight Committee’s sprawling probe into Epstein’s orbit and how previous investigations were handled.”

“In 2020, Band told Vanity Fair that Clinton visited Epstein’s private island in 2003.”

Why the Supreme Court Decision Benefits the GOP More

June 30, 2026 at 1:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “Party committees like the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the plaintiff in the case, can now spend unlimited sums on advertising in cooperation with campaigns after the court tossed out limits that were set as low as $130,600 for some Senate races.”

“The GOP will benefit more, at least in the current cycle. The Republican National Committee, the NRSC and the National Republican Congressional Committee, which focuses on House races, had $256 million in the bank at the end of May, twice as much as their Democratic counterparts. The party that holds the White House generally has an edge when it comes to raising money — though it also tends to lose seats in Congress in the midterms.”

“And political parties can now stretch their dollars further, because the ruling means both sides can buy the time at the same bargain-basement prices that stations are required to offer to candidates.”

Karl Rove Warns Iran Could Influence the Midterms

June 30, 2026 at 1:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republican strategist Karl Rove on Monday said Iran could create ‘problems’ to hurt President Trump ahead of November’s midterm elections,” NewsNation reports.

Said Rove: “The Iranians are not dumb. They know that the fall campaign starts in earnest on Labor Day. I would not be surprised to see them attempt to have an influence on the outcome by creating problems in mid-August and causing oil prices to rise and uncertainty to grow.”

Trump Praises Supreme Court, Despite Birthright Ruling

June 30, 2026 at 1:53 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump does not appear to be letting the Supreme Court ruling against him on birthright citizenship ruin his day. Instead, the president jumped on Truth Social to give the Supreme Court kudos for its slate of new rulings,” Mediaite reports.

Said Trump: “The Republican Party was treated very fairly.”

“He followed that up 45 minutes later with a sardonic post saying he would like to ‘congratulate President Xi, and the Great Country of China, on their massive Birthright Citizenship WIN!'”
