The Tension Roiling the House GOP Leadership

September 14, 2024 at 8:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “Things are getting tense inside the House Republican leadership suite as the GOP struggles to find a path forward on funding the government. Speaker Mike Johnson had to abruptly cancel a floor vote on his six-month stopgap spending bill with the SAVE Act attached this week amid a dozen or so GOP defections and near-unified Democratic opposition.”

“Johnson’s decision to pull the bill was yet another public blow for the speaker on spending, which has been a sore spot for Republicans throughout the entire 118th Congress. But the real drama right now is taking place behind the scenes, as GOP leadership offices grow increasingly frustrated with the situation – and one another.”

Harris and Trump Place Their Chips on Different States

September 14, 2024 at 7:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats have spent the last year eyeing a familiar trio of northern states that would deliver the White House in November: Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania are the ‘clearest pathway’ to victory, Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign leaders wrote in July — as long as she also picks up a single electoral vote in the Omaha area,” the Washington Post reports.

“The Trump team, meanwhile, has been focused on its own path in the Eastern time zone, a veritable ‘Red Wall’ trifecta that overlaps with the northern ‘Blue Wall’ around the Great Lakes.”

Said one Trump campaign official: “As long as we hold North Carolina, we just need to win Georgia and Pennsylvania. That is all we need to win. So when everybody is running around with all the machinations, she’s still playing defense.”

Politico: Where Harris chooses to campaign tells an important story about her strategy.

Trump Keeps Talking About January 6

September 14, 2024 at 7:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When a moderator asked Donald Trump about Jan. 6, 2021, at the presidential debate, the former president slipped immediately into a now-familiar revisionist history of the attack on the U.S. Capitol,” the New York Times reports.

“He falsely claimed that he had nothing to do with the assault, blaming it on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the police officers who protected the building that day against a mob of his supporters.”

“But then Mr. Trump made a brief but telling remark: He used the pronoun ‘we’ to describe some of the rioters, grammatically placing himself among those who have been charged with storming into the Capitol.”

Ballots with Incorrect Dates Won’t Count in Pennsylvania

September 13, 2024 at 9:53 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled Friday that mail ballots that are improperly dated won’t be counted in November, a move that could have major implications in the closely divided battleground state,” NBC News reports.
