Clinton’s White House Faced Impeachment With Discipline

September 27, 2019 at 3:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The last time Congress tried to impeach a president, the White House chief of staff had one rule: No one who wasn’t working directly on impeachment, including the president himself, was ever allowed to talk about it,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Clinton’s aides had studied Watergate, and their takeaway was that the public believed President Richard M. Nixon was being buried by the scandal, in part, because he talked about it endlessly. So their approach was that the only way to survive and to keep his job approval rating up was to demonstrate that the White House was still working, and that Mr. Clinton was still doing the job he was elected to do for the people.”

“But the approach is unlikely to succeed with President Trump, someone less concerned with policy than he is with how things play in distinct, daily news cycles. He heads into what appears to be a rapidly unfurling impeachment inquiry unprepared temperamentally, and with a depleted staff, many of whom are shrugging off the seriousness of what the president faces.”

How GOP Senators Respond to Whistleblower Report

September 27, 2019 at 2:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Reporter Laura Litvan says she gets three responses from Republican senators when she asks them about the whisteblower report:

1. “I haven’t seen the whistleblower report so I can’t comment.”

2. “I’m a potential juror if there’s a Senate trial so I shouldn’t comment.”

3. Radio silence, pursed lips, rapid escape

Tulsi Gabbard Now Backs Impeachment Inquiry

September 27, 2019 at 1:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) reversed herself and now backs an impeachment inquiry into President Trump, stating that her review of the whistleblower complaint, the memo of Trump’s July call with Ukraine’s president and Trump’s comments over the past few days swayed her decision, Axios reports.

While some have have speculated that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) would not hold a Senate trial if President Trump were impeached by the House, he told NPR that the Senate would indeed hold a trial.

Hearing on Whistleblower Report Possible Next Week

September 27, 2019 at 1:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff is eyeing a hearing on the whistleblower complaint next Friday, Politico reports.

“The precise details of that hearing — including whether it will be public — depends on whether the committee can schedule an interview with the whistleblower, and if it obtains the full inspector general’s report on the whistleblower’s complaint.”

Castro Will End Campaign If He Misses November Debate

September 27, 2019 at 12:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Julián Castro warned supporters that his presidential campaign will be over if he does not qualify for the November debate, the Texas Tribune reports.

“The email sought donations for ads to help him reach the new polling threshold: 3% in four national polls or 5% in two surveys from the first four early voting states. Castro has already met the donor requirement of 165,000 individuals but hasn’t met the polling requirement — or even come close.”

Karen Pence Is No Fan of Donald Trump

September 27, 2019 at 12:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A New York Times review of Piety & Power: Mike Pence and the Taking of the White House by Tom LoBianco includes this amazing anecdote on the vice president’s wife, Karen.

“Her influence seems significant. The cherry-red telephone on his desk as governor was a direct line to Karen, who maintained an office across the statehouse atrium but preferred phone conversations to avoid prying eyes. Karen ‘was livid’ at Trump’s prurient comments in the Access Hollywood tape, but her husband concluded it was too late to drop off the ticket. On election night, 2016, Karen refused to kiss Pence.”

Said Karen: “You got what you wanted, Mike. Leave me alone.”

Trump’s Attack on Whistleblower Caught on Video

September 27, 2019 at 12:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg got video of President Trump’s closed-door remarks to U.S. diplomats yesterday that were often unhinged.

Said Trump: “We’re at war. These people are sick. They’re sick.”

Both Biden and Warren Do Well with White Working Class

September 27, 2019 at 12:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Democracy Corps (D) survey finds Democrats have two electable candidates at the moment — Joe Biden (leads by 8 points) and Elizabeth Warren (leads by 7), with Bernie Sanders at the edge (5 percent).

“One of the reasons both Biden and Warren are proving to be electable is the surprising result with white working class voters. While Biden has more of a working class base in the Democratic primary, the 2020 election is being shaped by bigger forces. In this combined sample of white working class women (643 respondents), Biden loses by 9 points (50 to 41 percent) and Warren by 10 (51 to 41 percent). Both are gains on 2018 and a dramatic shift from 2016. That means the 13-point shift to the Democrats in the off-year has continued another 4 points now.”

“They both lose to Trump among white working class men (combined sample of 562) by a much bigger margin — 31 points and 33 points respectively. As daunting as that appears, the trend with men is encouraging as well. Democrats gained 14 points in 2018 and Biden would take those gains 3 points further. Warren holds the 2018 gains, as there is no evidence of working class voters going back to the 2016 Trump margins.”

Key takeaway: “Both Biden and Warren perform comparably with the white working class, and both make impressive gains with the women. That may be the unfolding story in the 2020 elections.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

September 27, 2019 at 12:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“There would be at least 35.”

— Former Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), quoted by Fox News, on the number of Republican senators who would vote to convict Trump if it was done anonymously.

Trump Loses Control of the Story

September 27, 2019 at 12:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Margaret Sullivan: “Donald Trump’s presidency would have been impossible without his reality-TV fame from NBC’s The Apprentice. And he is skilled at dominating the visual medium that still matters so much — even in our digital age — from his raucous rallies to his impromptu media gaggles outside a whirring helicopter to his symbiotic relationship with Fox News.”

“But not this week.”

“In a tectonic shift of media attention, every major television network — broadcast and cable alike — focused on a deeply damaging story that Trump can’t control.”

Ex-North Carolina GOP Chair to Plead Guilty

September 27, 2019 at 11:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Robin Hayes has agreed to plead guilty to lying to the FBI and faces a court hearing next week, the Raleigh News & Observer reports.

“Prosecutors accused Hayes of lying to FBl agents in a case that led to indictments not only of Hayes but businessman and political contributor Greg Lindberg. In April a federal grand jury indicted them and two of Lindberg’s associates on conspiracy and bribery charges for their alleged attempts to influence N.C. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey.”

What If John Ratcliffe Got the Job?

September 27, 2019 at 11:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

James Hohmann: “The Ukraine donnybrook shows the degree to which institutions depend on the individuals inside of them to function as they were designed. The whistleblower who sounded an alarm while others bit their tongues showed that. So did the inspector general who alerted Congress to his complaint when President Trump’s loyalists were trying to keep it secret. And the public got a glimpse during a House committee hearing on Thursday of how differently this scandal might have played out if Trump’s previous pick to lead the nation’s intelligence community had been confirmed.”

“The temperamental contrast was stark between Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-TX), the hyper-partisan congressman who wanted the job, and Joe Maguire, the decorated military hero who got it instead and seemed eager to show he’s no one’s toady. Democrats faulted Maguire, as the acting director of national intelligence, for checking in with the very entities who a CIA whistleblower had accused of wrongdoing, including Bill Barr’s Justice Department and Trump’s White House counsel’s office, to see if they wanted to claim executive privilege to prevent the disclosure of his allegations.”

Democrats Will Keep Next Debate to Single Night

September 27, 2019 at 11:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The DNC said that at least 12 presidential hopefuls are expected to appear together on a single night at next month’s televised debate in Ohio, the New York Times reports.

“The Ohio debate, on Oct. 15, is set to include the 10 candidates who appeared at this month’s debate in Houston… In addition to that group, the billionaire Tom Steyer and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard are scheduled to take the stage.”

Trump Mocks CNN Typo in Tweet Strewn With Mistakes

September 27, 2019 at 11:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “Donald Trump tried to take his mind off impending impeachment proceedings Friday morning by trying to rip CNN for an on-screen chyron mistake, but his barely comprehensible tweet suggests he may not know what a hyphen is.

Tweeted Trump: “To show you how dishonest the LameStream Media is, I used the word Liddle’, not Liddle, in discribing Corrupt Congressman Liddle’ Adam Schiff. Low ratings CNN purposely took the hyphen out and said I spelled the word little wrong. A small but never ending situation with CNN!”

“Trump appears to have confused a hyphen with an apostrophe. And, even if he had correctly identified it, it’s unclear why an apostrophe would be needed there. Oh, and he misspelled ‘describing.’ And ‘never-ending’ has a hyphen, and ‘low-ratings’ could use one in that context, too. And ‘liddle’ isn’t really a word. But at least the president is keeping himself busy.”

Feinstein Demands Verbatim Transcript of Call

September 27, 2019 at 11:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said after closed-door briefings with the acting director of national intelligence and the intelligence community inspector general that she wants a “word-for-word” transcript of President Trump’s call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, The Hill reports.

She noted the whistleblower complaint “suggests that an ‘official word-for-word transcript of the call was produced.”
