Gates Says Age of Some Candidates Is ‘Problematic’

May 12, 2019 at 9:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates told CBS News that age is a “problematic” issue in the 2020 presidential election.

Gates said candidates in their late seventies — like former Vice President Joe Biden, who is 76, and Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is 77 — don’t have the “kind of energy that I think is required to be president.” He also said he believes President Trump, at 72, may also be too old for the job.

Gates added: “I’m not sure you have the intellectual acuity that you might have had in your 60s. The thought of taking on those responsibilities at this point in my life would be pretty daunting.”

Trump Says He Wanted to Fire McGahn

May 12, 2019 at 8:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump tweeted he was “never a big fan of” former White House Counsel Don McGahn.

Said Trump: “I was NOT going to fire Bob Mueller, and did not fire Bob Mueller. In fact, he was allowed to finish his Report with unprecedented help from the Trump Administration. Actually, lawyer Don McGahn had a much better chance of being fired than Mueller. Never a big fan!”

Three Rogue Nations Challenge Trump

May 12, 2019 at 8:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Three nations that have long defined themselves as bitter adversaries of the United States — North Korea, Iran and Venezuela — decided this week they could take on President Trump,” the New York Times reports.

“Each one is betting that Mr. Trump is neither as savvy a negotiator nor as ready to use military force as he claims. Each also poses a drastically different challenge to a president who has little experience in handling international crises, has struggled to find the right balance of diplomacy and coercion and has not always been consistent in defining his foreign policy.”

“The rising tensions with all three serve as reminders that Mr. Trump’s constant talk about taking care of problems that he has accused his predecessors of aggravating, or failing to confront, is difficult to convert into real-world solutions — as events of recent days have shown.”

Trump Blocking More Than 20 Investigations

May 11, 2019 at 8:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump and his allies are working to block more than 20 separate investigations by Democrats into his actions as president, his personal finances and his administration’s policies, according to a Washington Post analysis, amounting to what many experts call the most expansive White House obstruction effort in decades.”

“Trump’s noncooperation strategy has shifted from partial resistance to all-out war as he faces mounting inquiries from the Democratic-controlled House — a strategy that many legal and congressional experts fear could undermine the institutional power of Congress for years to come. All told, House Democrats say the Trump administration has failed to respond to or comply with at least 79 requests for documents or other information.”

May 11, 2019 at 8:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Actress Alyssa Milano called for women to join her in a sex strike to protest strict abortion bans passed by Republican-controlled legislatures, NBC News reports.

The former star of “Charmed” and “Melrose Place” urged women in her tweet to stop having sex “until we get bodily autonomy back.”

Trump Seeks to Limit Judges’ Powers

May 11, 2019 at 4:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump is looking to stop lower courts from being able to issue wide-ranging injunctions in a move that could dramatically limit the authority of judges,” The Hill reports.

“The plan comes as groups opposed to Trump have been able to get several of his policies, including those seeking to limit immigration, put on hold by nationwide orders issued by lower courts in battles that were eventually decided by the Supreme Court.”

Leaked Letters Reveal NRA Chief’s Spending

May 11, 2019 at 4:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre billed the group’s ad agency $39,000 for one day of shopping at a Beverly Hills clothing boutique, $18,300 for a car and driver in Europe, and had the agency cover $13,800 in rent for a summer intern, according to newly revealed NRA internal documents,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The documents, posted anonymously on the internet, provide new details of the clothing, travel and other expenses totaling more than $542,000 that Ackerman McQueen Inc. alleges Mr. LaPierre billed to it.”

Pence Warns Graduates Christians Will Be Ridiculed

May 11, 2019 at 2:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vice President Mike Pence, who has been facing criticisms of his own religious views, warned Liberty University graduates that they have to stay strong against the challenges they’ll face from Hollywood, the media and the secular left, USA Today reports.

Said Pence: “Some of the loudest voices for tolerance today have little tolerance for traditional Christian beliefs. Be ready.”

He added: “Throughout most of American history, it has been pretty easy to call yourself Christian. It didn’t even occur to people that you might be shunned or ridiculed for defending the teachings of the Bible. But things are different now.”

The Founders Never Anticipated Donald Trump

May 11, 2019 at 2:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jeffrey Toobin: “Our constitutional system never contemplated a President like Donald Trump. The Framers anticipated friction among the three branches of government, which has been a constant throughout our history, but the Trump White House has now established a complete blockade against the legislative branch, thwarting any meaningful oversight. The system, it appears, may simply be incapable of responding to this kind of challenge.”

Obama Loyalists Stay on Sidelines

May 11, 2019 at 1:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Only one of the 21 Democrats running for president wants voters to see him as the establishment choice best able to fulfill the promise of President Barack Obama’s third term. But former vice president Joe Biden has yet to become a consensus pick of the White House and campaign advisers who made Obama’s two terms possible.”

“With some exceptions, the generation that brought to Washington an insurgent message they called ‘hope and change’ is once again resisting pressure to get in line, as they scan the field for a possible heir to Obama’s transformational 2008 candidacy and worry about a repeat of the disastrous 2016 election.”

“Many others, however, speak of their continued hunger for a new generation of leadership and a fresh face who can transcend political divisions. They worry about siding with a lifelong Washington fixture. And they are eager for someone like Obama who can bring new voters to the polls.”

Washington Flirts with Debt Crisis

May 11, 2019 at 1:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “As lawmakers trade fire over contempt votes and impeachment, there’s been no progress toward reaching a budget agreement or extending the federal government’s ability to borrow before September, when the money runs out. That’s raising the ugly prospect of more than $100 billion in mandatory cuts as well as an unprecedented default on US debt — a situation that could trigger a worldwide economic catastrophe.”

“It’s a mess everyone knows is coming, and yet no one seems to have a plan — at least at the moment — for averting disaster.”

Buttigieg Makes Inroads with Obama Donors

May 11, 2019 at 12:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News: “As dusk descended Thursday over the posh hills of Brentwood, actor Martin Sheen gathered with his former ‘West Wing’ co-stars Bradley Whitford and Mary McCormack to open up their checkbooks for Pete Buttigieg. Hollywood mogul Rob Reiner was also there for the event at actress Gwyneth Paltrow’s home, along with President Obama’s former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates and several former ambassadors who showed up to get a glimpse at the South Bend.”

“It was just one of nearly a dozen high-rolling fundraisers that Buttigieg has been holding this week in Los Angeles, San Diego and finally San Francisco, where he is collecting money Friday from Silicon Valley execs at a trio of fundraisers.”

Trump Gets Tough on China

May 11, 2019 at 12:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “For months, the prospect of a landmark trade agreement with China has tantalized Mr. Trump. But now, according to analysts and several former aides, his political calculus seems to have flipped. His recent statements suggest he now believes that demonstrating his toughness with the Chinese and walking away from a deal might well put him in a better position politically than signing one.”

Quote of the Day

May 11, 2019 at 11:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“There was no attempted coup. There was no way in hell that I was going to allow some coup or coup attempt to take place on my watch.”

— Former FBI general counsel James Baker, quoted by the Washington Post, adding that he is “sick of all the B.S.” that is said about the origins of the Russia investigation.

Bullock Teases ‘Big Announcement’

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock (D) teased his “big announcement” in a video, amid speculation he will join the Democratic presidential race.

Strong Economy May Carry Trump In Wisconsin

May 11, 2019 at 11:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Still, if the economy remains strong, it could be Mr. Trump’s best argument as he tries to replicate his narrow path to victory in the Electoral College in 2016, which ran straight through rural areas like Colfax in northwestern Wisconsin. Whatever faults people attribute to the president personally, even his critics say he could easily retain the loyalty of swing voters… those who see an economy that is stable, robust and meaningfully, if marginally, benefiting their lives.”

“The message of a thriving economy — assuming that Mr. Trump sticks to it, as aides and allies have been urging him to do — could leave Democrats especially vulnerable when coupled with Republicans’ relentless attacks on their rivals as radicals who hold extreme positions on health care, abortion and the environment.”

Inside Syria’s Secret Torture Prisons

May 11, 2019 at 10:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “As Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, closes in on victory over an eight-year revolt, a secret, industrial-scale system of arbitrary arrests and torture prisons has been pivotal to his success. While the Syrian military, backed by Russia and Iran, fought armed rebels for territory, the government waged a ruthless war on civilians, throwing hundreds of thousands into filthy dungeons where thousands were tortured and killed.”

“Nearly 128,000 have never emerged, and are presumed to be either dead or still in custody, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, an independent monitoring group that keeps the most rigorous tally. Nearly 14,000 were ‘killed under torture.’ Many prisoners die from conditions so dire that a United Nations investigation labeled the process ‘extermination.'”
