White House Stays Quiet on Kushner

June 3, 2017 at 7:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“From undisclosed meetings with a Putin-allied banker to the suggestion of secret backchannels using Russian communication equipment, the past week’s headlines have gotten increasingly dire for Jared Kushner,” Axios reports.

“A normally chatty and combative White House has been largely radio silent on the Kushner drama with senior administration officials like National Economic Director Gary Cohn and National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster refusing to comment when asked directly about the matter in press briefings.”

Nunes Committee Asked for ‘Unmasking’ of Americans

June 3, 2017 at 7:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Republican-controlled House Intelligence Committee asked U.S. spy agencies late last year to reveal the names of U.S. individuals or organizations contained in classified intelligence on Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election, engaging in the same practice that President Trump has accused the Obama administration of abusing,” the Washington Post reports.

“The chairman of the committee, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), has since cast the practice of ‘unmasking’ of U.S. individuals and organizations mentioned in classified reports as an abuse of surveillance powers by the outgoing Obama administration.”

Trump Search for FBI Chief Seen as Chaotic

June 2, 2017 at 6:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “is still looking for a new FBI director more than three weeks after he fired James Comey, and sources familiar with the recruiting process say it has been chaotic and that job interviews led by Trump have been brief,” Reuters reports.

“Three close associates of three contenders for the job, all of whom have been interviewed by Trump, said the candidates were summoned to the White House for 10- to 20-minute conversations with Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Those conversations, which followed initial interviews at the Justice Department, have been light on questions about substantive issues facing the agency.”

Ethics Office Will Challenge Unsigned Waivers

June 2, 2017 at 5:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Office of Government Ethics plans to press the White House to clarify when it issued a slew of ethics waivers giving its staffers permission to interact with their former employers or clients, an indication that the exemptions might not have been properly granted,” the Washington Post reports.

“Ten of the 14 waivers publicly disclosed this week by the White House are undated and unsigned, raising questions about when they were put in place.”

Bloomberg Leads Effort to Bypass Feds on Climate Deal

June 2, 2017 at 3:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg “is organizing an effort by governors, mayors, business leaders and other private citizens to make sure that Americans play an active role in the Paris Agreement — with or without the federal government,” Yahoo News reports.

Said Bloomberg: “Americans are not walking away from the Paris Climate Agreement. Just the opposite — we are forging ahead. Mayors, governors, and business leaders from both political parties are signing onto a statement of support that we will submit to the UN — and together, we will reach the emission reduction goals the U.S. made in Paris in 2015.”

“If successful, this will be the first time U.S. citizens, local and state officials circumvented the federal government to negotiate an agreement with the United Nations.”

Mueller Expands Probe to Flynn’s Turkish Ties

June 2, 2017 at 3:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Special counsel Robert Mueller “is expanding his probe to assume control of a grand jury investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn,” three sources told Reuters.

“The move means Mueller’s politically charged inquiry will now look into Flynn’s paid work as a lobbyist for a Turkish businessman in 2016, in addition to contacts between Russian officials and Flynn and other Trump associates during and after the Nov. 8 presidential election.”

Kellyanne Conway Buys $7.8 Million Home

June 2, 2017 at 2:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Kellyanne Conway “is the latest Trump administration official to skew the Washington, DC’s average single-family home price with her purchase of a Northwest mansion,” the Washington Business Journal reports.

“Via an LLC, Conway, the first woman to manage a successful presidential campaign, and her husband, attorney George Conway, paid $7.785 million for the 15,000-square-foot home in Massachusetts Avenue Heights. The deal closed May 17, though the deed wasn’t recorded until this week.”

Conway told Mansion Global: “I’m the poorest kid on the block.”

What Does Jared Kushner Sound Like?

June 2, 2017 at 2:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “He has a verified Twitter account with no tweets. He declined to comment for recent stories about him… And to most Americans, the very sound of his voice is a mystery… But you can hear it in a few videos on YouTube. There’s one of him speaking to a group about Brooklyn real estate, to a Jehovah’s Witness program about buying one of their buildings, and to SundanceTV about buying the New York Observer. His voice sounds young, and he sometimes stretches out the sound of his vowels.”

Democrats Must Focus on Romney Voters

June 2, 2017 at 2:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In the six months since the election, we’ve obsessed about Obama-Trump voters but completely ignored their inverse: the Romney-Clinton voters,” Politico reports.

“Who are they? Romney-Clinton voters are, generally speaking, college-educated suburban professionals: lawyers, doctors and businesspeople. They voted for Mitt Romney in 2012, but switched to Hillary Clinton in 2016. They abhor xenophobia, the alt-right and racists, but they also mostly socialize within their own race and they’re mostly white. They’re socially liberal but not obsessed with a political agenda. They value fiscal responsibility but also believe in investing in the future, especially education. They remain deeply worried about Trump’s qualifications, scared about his temperament and alienated by his misogyny and ties to extremists. For the first time in a long time, they’re willing to hear about and vote for Democrats.”

“This poses deep risks for Republicans because these voters have long been a key cohort of the GOP’s electoral coalition. Studies show that upper-income and highly educated Americans are substantially more likely to cast ballots, potentially posing a decisive factor in the upcoming midterm elections. And it just so happens that the Romney-Clinton vote centered in areas of the country that are turning bluer—mainly places with large suburban populations and strong economies—where major congressional, senatorial and gubernatorial races will be held in 2017 and 2018.”

Trump Starts Returning CIA Torture Report to Congress

June 2, 2017 at 2:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration has begun returning copies of a voluminous 2014 Senate report about the Central Intelligence Agency’s detention and interrogation program to Congress, complying with the demand of a top Republican senator who has criticized the report for being shoddy and excessively critical of the C.I.A.,” the New York Times reports.

“The Trump administration’s move, described by multiple congressional officials, raises the possibility that copies of the 6,700-page report could be locked in Senate vaults for good — exempt from laws requiring that government records eventually become public.”

Quote of the Day

June 2, 2017 at 10:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump doesn’t know anything about policy. Donald Trump doesn’t know anything about politics. Donald Trump doesn’t know anything about anything. He can get up and give a good speech. You listen to him talk about any topic and he wanders from sentence to sentence to sentence. So Steve Bannon is now the President of the United States. And that was more clear yesterday than ever before.”

— “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough, quoted by Mediaite.

White House Tells Agencies to Ignore Democrats

June 2, 2017 at 10:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House is telling federal agencies to blow off Democratic lawmakers’ oversight requests, as Republicans fear the information could be weaponized against President Trump,” Politico reports.

“At meetings with top officials for various government departments this spring, Uttam Dhillon, a White House lawyer, told agencies not to cooperate with such requests from Democrats.”

“It appears to be a formalization of a practice that had already taken hold, as Democrats have complained that their oversight letters requesting information from agencies have gone unanswered since January, and the Trump administration has not yet explained the rationale.”

The Green Party Really Isn’t That Green

It’s one of the great ironies of the last two decades that the Green Party has helped elect presidents who have hurt the environment.

Ohio Lt. Governor Opens Up About Opiod Addiction

June 2, 2017 at 9:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ohio Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor (R) told the Dayton Daily News that both of her sons are addicted to opiods.

Said Taylor: “When you’re in a crisis mode, every day is ‘just get by, get through.’ And we are not there today. We are not out of the woods, but we’re not in a crisis mode.”

She added: “It’s awful.”

A Middle Finger to the World

June 2, 2017 at 8:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Grunwald: “Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement was not really about the climate. And despite his overheated rhetoric about the ‘tremendous’ and ‘draconian’ burdens the deal would impose on the U.S. economy, Trump’s decision wasn’t really about that, either. America’s commitments under the Paris deal, like those of the other 194 cooperating nations, were voluntary. So those burdens were imaginary.”

“No, Trump’s abrupt withdrawal from this carefully crafted multilateral compromise was a diplomatic and political slap: it was about extending a middle finger to the world, while reminding his base that he shares its resentments of fancy-pants elites and smarty-pants scientists and tree-hugging squishes who look down on real Americans who drill for oil and dig for coal. He was thrusting the United States into the role of global renegade, rejecting not only the scientific consensus about climate but the international consensus for action, joining only Syria and Nicaragua (which wanted an even greener deal) in refusing to help the community of nations address a planetary problem.”

“Congress doesn’t seem willing to pay for Trump’s border wall—and Mexico certainly isn’t—so rejecting the Paris deal was an easier way to express his Fortress America themes without having to pass legislation.”

Baldwin Helps Raise $5 Million for New Jersey Democrats

June 2, 2017 at 8:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Alec Baldwin, the actor whose impersonations of President Trump has made Saturday Night Live must-see TV for liberals and political junkies, helped raise $5.1 million Thursday night for New Jersey Democrats,” the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

“That’s believed to be the most money ever raised by either party at a single event in state history.”

Trump Still Consulting Fox News Host

June 2, 2017 at 8:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle — who was once tipped to be taking Sean Spicer’s press secretary job — told the Daily Mail that Donald Trump called her before making the public announcement to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

Guilfoyle defended the president’s decision to pull out of the climate accord, calling it a “brave and courageous thing.”
