More Than 3,000 Colorado Voters Cancel Registrations

July 14, 2017 at 5:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Nearly 3,400 Coloradans canceled their voter registrations in the wake of the Trump administration’s request for voter info, the Secretary of State’s Office confirmed Thursday, providing the first statewide glimpse at the extent of the withdrawals,” the Denver Post reports.

“The 3,394 cancellations represent a vanishingly small percentage of the electorate — 0.09 percent of the state’s 3.7 million registered voters. But the figure is striking nonetheless, with some county election officials reporting that they’ve never seen anything quite like it in their careers.”

8 People Were In Trump Tower Russia Meeting

July 14, 2017 at 4:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort included at least eight people,” CNN reports.

“The revelation of additional participants comes as The Associated Press first reported Friday that a Russian-American lobbyist named Rinat Akhmetshin said he also attended the June 2016 meeting with Donald Trump Jr.”

“So far acknowledged in attendance: Trump Jr., Kushner, Manafort, Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, Akhmetshin and publicist Rob Goldstone, who helped set up the meeting. A source familiar with the circumstances told CNN there were at least two other people in the room as well, a translator and a representative of the Russian family who had asked Goldstone to set up the meeting. The source did not provide the names.”

HuffPost: “One of the previously unidentified attendees was Anatoli Samochornov, a Russian-born American translator who previously spent years working for the U.S. government.”

GOP May Tie Debt Limit Increase to Veteran’s Bill

July 14, 2017 at 1:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans are considering tying a must-pass increase in the federal debt limit to funding for a program that lets military veterans get medical care outside of Veterans Affairs facilities,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The legislative move, still in the early stages of discussion on Capitol Hill, would let Republicans claim a policy victory while raising the federal borrowing cap.”

The Wasted Mind of Ben Sasse

July 14, 2017 at 1:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Slate: “Many politicians are hypocrites, of course. But most of them are also phonies and bullshitters. Ben Sasse isn’t. He stands out by educating himself earnestly and speaking honestly about complicated matters of history and policy… Unfortunately, he is also beginning to stand out by doing nothing of substance as the things he says he believes in are thrown in a garbage can by his own party.”

House GOP Weighs Massive Partisan Spending Bill

July 14, 2017 at 1:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House GOP leaders will decide next week whether to brave an ugly floor fight over a massive GOP spending bill — a proposal applauded by some rank-and-file Republicans but that risks embarrassment if it fails,” Politico reports.

“In a closed-door GOP conference meeting Friday morning, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said all 12 appropriations bills will be finished in committee by the end of next week. Starting Monday, leadership will begin a tentative whip count on whether lawmakers would vote for a package before the August recess that combines all of those bills into one $1 trillion government funding bill.”

“Though the bill would never pass the Senate in the face of Democratic opposition, the process would allow House Republicans to offer potentially hundreds of amendments, an exercise that excites members who are frustrated that they’ve had no input on how to fund the government… The strategy could open something of a Pandora’s box, however. Lawmakers would be required to vote on controversial amendments that could be used against them in their districts, from provisions on the Confederate flag to gay rights proposals that put them in bind.”

Trump Hires Lawyer to Respond to Russia Probes

July 14, 2017 at 1:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “plans to put a veteran Washington lawyer, Ty Cobb, in charge of overseeing the White House’s legal and media response to investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign,” Bloomberg reports.

“Top administration officials want someone to enforce discipline in the White House regarding Russia matters — and that includes the president, who frequently vents his frustrations about the investigations on Twitter.”

— J.P. Morgan CEO Jaime Dimon, quoted by CNBC.

Watch Trump’s Never-Ending Handshake with Macron

July 14, 2017 at 9:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump’s saga of awkward handshakes continues,” CNN reports.

“On Friday, right before he left France, Trump said goodbye to France’s President Emmanuel Macron, with the two grabbing and holding hands for a long, long handshake. The entire handshake lasted about 25 seconds.”

When Politics Is a Game of Mutually Assured Destruction

It seems insane that the email received by Donald Trump Jr. offering dirt on Hillary Clinton was so explicit about the information being directly from the Russian government. Not only was the source mentioned explicitly in the email, it was in the email’s subject line.

Trump the Salesman Isn’t Selling

July 14, 2017 at 9:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The president has treated health care and a host of other legislative agenda items, from taxes to infrastructure, as issues to be hammered out by lawmakers with often-scant direction from the executive branch — and with decidedly mixed signals from Trump himself.”

“Trump’s sporadic salesmanship on the bills and ambitions lingering on Capitol Hill has become a defining characteristic of the complicated relationship between the president and congressional Republicans. Although Trump routinely proclaims his desire for political victories, he has yet to make a full-throated case to the country about legislation that Congress is pursuing and has spent a modest amount of time attempting to twist arms in the House or Senate.”

It’s All in the Family

July 14, 2017 at 9:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Most White House aides are trying to protect the principal: the president and, really, the presidency itself. But Trump himself seems focused primarily on protecting his personal interests, which includes his family.”

James Hohmann: “Trump’s embrace of a kind of nepotism that’s historically been more common in banana republics than the first world continues to backfire on him — creating a myriad legal and political headaches. And they’re probably only going to get worse.”

Big Majority Oppose GOP Health Care Bill

July 14, 2017 at 8:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Kaiser Health Tracking Poll finds that 61% of Americans continue to hold unfavorable views of the Republican plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, including 44% who say they have “very unfavorable” view.

Ex-Soviet Counter Intelligence Officer Was Also at Meeting

July 14, 2017 at 7:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Russian lawyer who met with the Trump team after a promise of compromising material on Hillary Clinton was accompanied by a Russian-American lobbyist — a former Soviet counter intelligence officer who is suspected by some U.S. officials of having ongoing ties to Russian intelligence,” NBC News has learned.

“The presence at the meeting of a Russian-American with suspected intelligence ties is likely to be of interest to special counsel Robert Mueller and the House and Senate panels investigating the Russian election interference campaign.”

Associated Press: “Russian-American lobbyist says he attended a June 2016 meeting with President Donald Trump’s son that was billed as part of a Russian government effort to help the Republican campaign. Rinat Akhmetshin confirmed his participation Friday.”

The Least Convincing GOP Holdout

July 14, 2017 at 7:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Nather: “It’s Marco Rubio. He went on a mini-tweetstorm on Wednesday night, saying he needed things like more hospital money for Florida and the ability to waive Medicaid spending limits if there’s another outbreak like the Zika virus. Yesterday, he told reporters he got some of what he needed, but he claimed he was still undecided on the bill.”

“Rubio is not going to be the vote that kills Affordable Care Act repeal. But if you’re a senator who wants maximum attention for your priorities, now’s the time to get it.”

Senate GOP One Vote from Health Bill Failure

July 14, 2017 at 7:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Senate Republican leaders are praying that their fragile whip count holds over the weekend, as just one more ‘no’ vote would doom the party’s Obamacare repeal effort from even coming up for debate. Two GOP senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Rand Paul of Kentucky, said Thursday afternoon they will oppose a procedural vote next week to bring the bill to the floor.”

“GOP leaders are putting immense pressure on about half a dozen other Republican senators not to join them and topple the entire effort. Another ‘no’ is enough to kill the bill, and would also likely lead to mass defections.”

Axios: “If the Senate’s health care bill dies, moderate Republicans will likely be the ones who kill it. And the changes released yesterday won’t do much to allay their biggest concerns.”

Playbook: “The procedural vote to allow debate on the GOP health care is the real game. In other words: if Republicans are able to begin debate on the bill, most people think it will pass. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been pressing Republicans to get on board and amend the package on the floor. If the bill reaches the floor, McConnell is expected to offer a manager’s amendment, which could change parts of the bill in one fell swoop.”

Tillerson Talks About Frustrations on the Job

July 14, 2017 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said he did not mean to criticize the U.S. government but that, on a whole, “it’s largely not a highly disciplined organization.”

Said Tillerson: “Decision-making is fragmented, and sometimes people don’t want to take decisions. Coordination is difficult through the interagency process.”

Senate GOP May Not Have CBO Score Cruz Amendment

July 13, 2017 at 9:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Republicans may not use the CBO to score a version of Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) controversial amendment that was included in the updated Senate healthcare bill,” The Hill reports.

“Instead, a member of Senate GOP leadership said analysis from the Trump administration — including the Health and Human Services Department and the White House Office of Management and Budget — might be used instead of the nonpartisan CBO. That could provide a much more favorable analysis for the bill.”

Caitlin Owens: The massive Senate GOP shift on pre-existing conditions.
