Harris Campaign Plans Rally with ‘Special Musical Guest’

October 17, 2024 at 11:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Kamala Harris is promoting a get-out-the-vote rally with a ‘surprise musical guest,’ a move to engage young supporters just as she needs to nudge groups of low-propensity voters to the polls,” Bloomberg reports.

“The vice president’s campaign has been blasting text messages and running Instagram ads urging supporters to enter to win free tickets to the concert scheduled for the last week before Election Day. One ad uses the font style and lime-green of Charli XCX’s album Brat, hinting that the British singer could be part of the musical lineup.”

October 17, 2024 at 11:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Howard University poll of Black voters across the seven swing states finds that 84% of respondents said they planned to vote for Kamala Harris, while only 8% said they would support Donald Trump and another 8% remained undecided.

About 63% of respondents indicated that were “very excited” about voting in November.

Dead Heat in Michigan

October 17, 2024 at 11:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Mitchell Research poll in Michigan finds Kamala Harris and Donald Trump deadlocked in a multi-candidate race, 47% to 47%.

Said pollster Steve Mitchell: “Although there have been interesting changes in certain crosstabs, the race continues to be where it was two weeks ago, as close as 2 pages in a book.”

In the U.S. Senate race, Elissa Slotkin (D) leads Mike Rogers (R), 47% to 43%.

Trump Labels January 6 Insurrectionists as ‘We’

October 17, 2024 at 11:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Appearing at a town hall hosted by Univision, Trump was confronted by a self-identified Republican named Ramiro González who cast Trump’s actions surrounding Jan. 6 as a dealbreaker for him. González challenged Trump to win his support.”

“But Trump made no apologies for that day. What he instead did was actually link himself to the rioters — stronger than he ever has before.”

Said Trump: “There were no guns down there; we didn’t have guns… The others had guns, but we didn’t have guns.”

“The first thing to note is that’s false; Trump supporters did have guns and many other weapons. But also consider what Trump has done rhetorically. He cast the insurrectionists as a ‘we.'”

Russia to Deploy North Korean Soldiers in Ukraine

October 17, 2024 at 11:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that he has intelligence reports that 10,000 North Korean soldiers are preparing to enter the war on the side of Russia against Ukraine,” the Financial Times reports.

Just Security created a “heat map” of the United States displaying the hometown origins of all the defendants charged with federal crimes in connection with the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The map reflects the work of the largest criminal investigation in U.S. history.

Inside Kamala Harris’ Small, Quiet Transition Team

October 17, 2024 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NOTUS: “The vice president isn’t focused on it. But a close group of aides is beginning the work of vetting a new administration, with names already flying in.”

Harris Made a Few Statements in Her Fox News Interview

October 17, 2024 at 10:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Margaret Sullivan: “First, that she is unafraid and is willing to speak to all voters. It’s hard to imagine Donald Trump, these days, submitting to an interview with, say, Rachel Maddow of MSNBC; just this week, he turned away from a CNBC interview, and earlier canceled a CBS News 60 Minutes agreement.”

“Second, Harris did manage to introduce a few snippets of reality to dedicated Fox viewers who probably haven’t been exposed to some of the most troubling criticisms of Trump…”

“She even was able to mention, at some length, the harsh view of the former commander-in-chief from Mark Milley, who served in two top military roles – including chair of the joint chiefs of staff – during the Trump administration.”

‘We Created a Monster’

October 17, 2024 at 9:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

John Miller: “I want to apologize to America. I helped create a monster.”

“For nearly 25 years, I led marketing at NBC and NBCUniversal. I led the team that marketed ‘The Apprentice,’ the reality show that made Donald Trump a household name outside of New York City, where he was better known for overextending his empire and appearing in celebrity gossip columns.”

“To sell the show, we created the narrative that Trump was a super-successful businessman who lived like royalty. That was the conceit of the show. At the very least, it was a substantial exaggeration; at worst, it created a false narrative by making him seem more successful than he was.”

“In fact, Trump declared business bankruptcy four times before the show went into production, and at least twice more during his 14 seasons hosting. The imposing board room where he famously fired contestants was a set, because his real boardroom was too old and shabby for TV.”

Who Kamala Harris Was Speaking to on Fox News

October 17, 2024 at 9:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Kamala Harris had a large audience of Republican voters watch her Fox News interview last night — the vast majority of them unlikely to ever vote for her.

But there was one slice of the audience that she was really speaking to.

Israel Is Examining if Hamas Leader Was Killed

October 17, 2024 at 9:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Israeli military said on Thursday that it is assessing whether Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar has been killed in the Gaza Strip,” the New York Times reports.

“The military released no further details about the assessment, but four Israeli officials said the military was taking the body of a slain militant to a laboratory in Israel in order to assess whether its DNA matches that of Mr. Sinwar.”

Presidential Popularity No Longer Driven by the Economy

October 17, 2024 at 9:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Seth Masket: “A lot of political science and punditry on US presidential popularity has tended to take some form of ‘the economy, stupid’ — when the economy is growing, voters like the president and his party, and when it’s shrinking, they don’t. And that was a good description of the politics of the second half of the 20th century. As John Sides and Robert Griffin have demonstrated, there was a strong correlation between presidential approval and economic performance from the presidencies of John F. Kennedy through George W. Bush.”

“But this correlation has essentially vanished during the past three presidents.”

Inside the Secretive Ad-Testing Factory for Kamala Harris

October 17, 2024 at 8:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The biggest super PAC in American politics is in the middle of an unparalleled spending spree, unleashing more money on television advertising in the closing weeks of the 2024 race than the campaigns of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris combined,” the New York Times reports.

“The group, known as Future Forward, has ascended to the pinnacle of the Democratic political universe with remarkable speed, winning over some of the world’s richest people with grand promises of a ‘Moneyball’ method to political advertising that it has pitched as the most sophisticated ever undertaken.”

“The group is, in some ways, an ad-making laboratory masquerading as a super PAC, testing thousands of messages, social media posts and ads in the 2024 race, ranking them in order of effectiveness and approving only those that resonate with voters. Ad makers produce roughly 20 potential commercials for every spot that ever airs.”

Trump Cancels Another Interview

October 17, 2024 at 8:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Brian Stelter: “Overnight, I learned of another planned Trump interview that was suddenly scrapped. NBC News thought it had secured a sit-down with Trump to discuss the economy and other matters.”

“The interview was expected to take place in Philadelphia on Monday and correspondent Christine Romans (a CNN alum) was set to be the interviewer, I’m told. But then it was called off by the Trump team.”

Quote of the Day

October 17, 2024 at 8:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Frankly, he’s getting, if anything, less attached to reality, even for him, than I have seen before. I mean, some of the stuff that he’s out there saying is really wild. And then you had that weird rally, 39-minute, I don’t know what you call it, but there’s some — I think he’s suffering from what I call my mamentia — madness and dementia at the same time.”

— James Carville, in an interview with PBS Newshour, on Donald Trump.

At Least 30 Election Deniers Serving as Trump Electors

October 17, 2024 at 8:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than a dozen Republicans who were ‘fake electors’ in 2020, including several facing criminal charges, are serving as former President Donald Trump’s official electors in battleground states this year,” CNN reports.

“Another 16 GOP electors from these states are election deniers who say President Joe Biden’s victory in 2020 was fraudulent. Combined, these election deniers and 2020 fake electors represent more than a third of the 82 electors picked this year to support Trump in the seven states where he attempted to overturn the results in 2020.”
