McKay Coppins: “Romney had made this prediction before, telling anyone who would listen in the run-up to the 2020 election that he thought Trump was going to get a second term. He’d even bet one of his sons his prized 1985 BMW that Biden would lose. But back then, he’d told me, it was a kind of psychological game he played with himself—predicting the outcome he most dreaded as a form of inoculation.”

“This time felt different. Trump had repeatedly pledged to use the Justice Department and the FBI to go after his political enemies if reelected. ‘I am your retribution,’ he enjoyed telling his crowds. Romney knew that he was likely to appear on any enemies list kept by the former president, and he’d privately mused to friends that it might be time for him and his wife, Ann, to consider moving abroad…”

“But when I asked Romney, in the spring, what a Trump reelection would mean for him and his family, he was careful at first.”

Said Romney: “I don’t know the answer to that… the good news is I haven’t had an affair with anybody; I don’t have any classified documents; I can’t imagine something I’ve done that would justify an investigation, let alone an indictment.”

Deseret News: If Trump wins, Mitt Romney fears retribution.

It marks a shift from past cycles, when get-out-the-vote efforts would be led by the Republican National Committee.”

“More than 400 economists and former high-ranking US policymakers are endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris and her vision for the American economy,” CNN reports.

“The mass endorsement lands as Harris tries to erode former President Donald Trump’s lead on the economy, a critical issue that many Americans say could decide their vote this election.”

Semafor: “Vance, alongside a small group of his longtime advisors, his wife, and Trump advisor Jason Miller, has been holding various in-person and Zoom meetings for over a month in an effort to prepare for the Oct. 1 debate against Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.”

“Some of these meetings have been ‘murder board’ sessions, designed to shore up anticipated weak spots and prepare for counterattacks. The goal is to “acquaint” Vance with Walz’s debate style, provide him with relevant research on policy positions, and work at some of the tougher potential questions.”

Kamala Harris recorded an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio, Semafor reports.

The interview is reflective of her media strategy going forward: Engagement with local media in key states, some nontraditional digital media and limited national media.

Washington Post: “With the help of our polling averages, we’ve identified five likely paths to the White House based on Harris and Trump’s standing in the polls. We’ve also identified three less likely paths, including a tie in the electoral college.”

“Kamala Harris recently transferred $10 million to the DCCC. How much has former President Donald Trump given the NRCC? Not one red cent,” Punchbowl News reports.

“Trump also has yet to appear at a major fundraising event for the NRCC, leaving a huge, eight-figure hole in the committee’s budget. Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee hasn’t given to the House GOP’s campaign arm all cycle.”

“Donald Trump urged voters Monday in Pennsylvania to vote early in the crucial swing state. Then, he quickly reversed course,” Politico reports.

“Early voting, the former president said, is ‘stupid’ — even if it might help him as polls show him in a close race with Vice President Kamala Harris.”

“Kamala Harris is launching a targeted effort to court Republican voters in rural Pennsylvania,” Axios reports.

“It’s a sign that the Harris campaign is not only aiming to surge Democratic turnout in vote dense Philly and Pittsburgh but also trying hard to blunt former President Trump’s margins in swing or red counties across the commonwealth.”

“The Harris campaign is launching a 30-second ad on Tuesday featuring two two-time Trump voters who plan to vote for Harris.”

Michigan state Rep. Jim DeSana (R) said that some people don’t see Vice President Kamala Harris as Black, the Detroit News reports.

Said DeSana: “Well and I’m not sure that everybody perceives Kamala as authentically Black, because doesn’t she have a Jamaican father? There’s some Jamaican and Indian in there. Some Asian blood, too. Like Samoan? I don’t know.”
