Sanders Vows to Fight On

June 8, 2016 · 7:13 am ET · 210 Comments

“Revolutions rarely give way to gracious expressions of defeat,” the New York Times reports.

“And so, despite the crushing California results that rolled in for him on Tuesday night, despite the insurmountable delegate math and the growing pleas that he end his quest for the White House, Senator Bernie Sanders took to the stage in Santa Monica and basked, bragged and vowed to fight on.”

“In a speech of striking stubbornness, he ignored the history-making achievement of his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, who became the first woman in American history to clinch the presidential nomination of a major political party.”

Politico quoted Sanders: “The struggle continues.”

Sanders Will Return Home to Assess Campaign

June 7, 2016 · 9:01 am ET · 45 Comments

Sen. Bernie Sanders “plans to take stock of his presidential campaign at his home in Burlington, Vt., following Tuesday’s primary here and in five other states,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Sanders: “Let’s assess where we are after tomorrow before we make statements based on speculation.”

Said Clinton: “Our campaigns are certainly talking. I’ll be reaching out after tomorrow night because I obviously want to unite the party.”

No One Stole the Nomination from Sanders

June 6, 2016 · 2:07 pm ET · 282 Comments

Jonathan Chait: “The system isn’t rigged. Clinton is going to win the nomination because she has won far more votes. She currently leads with 55 percent of the total vote to 43 percent. That’s fairly close for a primary, but it’s not Bush-versus-Gore close. It’s not even Bush-versus-Dukakis close (the 1988 election, widely seen as a landslide, was settled by less than 8 percent).”

“Clinton’s lead in pledged delegates is proportionally smaller than her lead in total votes because Sanders has benefited from low-turnout caucuses. Yet Sanders has enjoyed astonishing success at framing his narrative of the primary as a contest that, in some form or fashion, has been stolen from its rightful winner. His version of events has bled into the popular culture and fueled disillusionment among his supporters.”

Sanders Crowds Haven’t Faded

June 6, 2016 · 6:44 am ET · 40 Comments

New York Times: “Mr. Sanders’s chances of winning the Democratic presidential nomination have been fading since Hillary Clinton’s big win in April in New York. With her victory on Sunday in Puerto Rico, she stands only 28 delegates short of securing the nomination, and she is almost certain to clinch it on Tuesday when New Jersey, California and four other states hold primaries. But one would not know that from the enthusiastic throngs of supporters who still flock to hear him call for a transformation of America’s economy and for a political revolution.”

“Some are there in solidarity with his message, and others because they believe Mr. Sanders when he says, against the odds, that he can still snag the nomination at the party’s convention in July. And then there are many who, regardless of their outlook on the race, are streaming in for what they believe may be their last glimpse of a political phenomenon.”

Clinton Says Sanders Should End His Campaign

June 5, 2016 · 5:02 pm ET · 347 Comments

Hillary Clinton told CNN that Bernie Sanders should end his campaign and begin convincing supporters to line up behind Hillary Clinton as the presumptive Democratic nominee.

“Clinton said that in 2008, some supporters urged her to battle Barack Obama to the convention but noted that she decided to cede to Obama rather than fight because they shared similar policy goals and values. When this year’s primary season largely ends Tuesday, she said, ‘I expect Senator Sanders to do the same.'”

Sanders Insists He’ll Fight to the Convention

June 5, 2016 · 10:43 am ET · 295 Comments

Sen. Bernie Sanders declared that the Democratic convention “will be a contested convention,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Sanders: “I have heard reports that Secretary Clinton has said it’s all going to be over on Tuesday night. I have heard reports that the media, after the New Jersey results come in, are going to declare that it is all over. That simply is not accurate.”

Democrats Mull How to Push Sanders Out

June 3, 2016 · 6:59 am ET · 41 Comments

CNN: “In private conversations on Capitol Hill, senior Democrats are weighing how to persuade Sanders to step aside without appearing as if they are trying to strong-arm him out of the race. In a phone call last month, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid made the case to Sanders why it would make sense for him to leave the race after New Jersey and California vote on June 7, according to sources familiar with the conversation.”
“Senators and aides say they’ve felt reassured after recent discussions with Sanders and his advisers that he won’t be a destructive force once voting concludes in mid-June. But Sanders has publicly vowed to take his fight to Philadelphia, something that could deprive the party of a critical month of healing and has spawned fears of unrest at the July nominating convention.”

Reid Says Sanders Should Quit

June 2, 2016 · 9:26 am ET · 96 Comments

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid told the AP that Bernie Sanders shouldn’t continue his campaign through the Democratic convention in July.

Said Reid: “I’ve never been too good at math but I can figure that one out. I think he better do a little mathing.”

He added: “I don’t know what that’s going to prove. Sometimes you just have to give up. I’ve lost before. The numbers aren’t there.”

“How do you do it? It’s a good question. And the truth is, right now I’m a bit busy running for president to have figured that out, other than to tell you that it requires a mass-based political effort bringing millions of people together.”

— Sen. Bernie Sanders, in an interview with Rolling Stone, on how he would get his proposals through a GOP-controlled Congress.

Sanders Pushes for Fight Over Israel

May 29, 2016 · 11:43 am ET · 120 Comments

Sen. Bernie Sanders “has begun pushing the Democratic Party toward a platform fight over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a departure from his core focus on domestic economic issues that would put pressure on Hillary Clinton to handle a growing divide within her party,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“The Democratic Party has long had a policy of support for Israel and its government, but consensus on that subject has frayed in recent years.”

Trump Backs Out of Debate with Sanders

May 27, 2016 · 4:22 pm ET · 199 Comments

Donald Trump said he will not participate in a debate with Bernie Sanders, Politico reports.

Said Trump: “Based on the fact that the Democratic nominating process is totally rigged and Crooked Hillary Clinton and Deborah Wasserman Schultz will not allow Bernie Sanders to win, and now that I am the presumptive Republican nominee, it seems inappropriate that I would debate the second place finisher.”

He added: “As I want to debate Bernie Sanders – and it would be an easy payday – I will wait to debate the first place finisher in the Democratic Party, probably Crooked Hillary Clinton, or whoever it may be.”

Sanders Camp Suggests Trump May Be Chickening Out

May 27, 2016 · 12:38 pm ET · 100 Comments

Jeff Weaver, the campaign manager for Sen. Bernie Sanders, suggested Donald Trump may now be trying to avoid a debate between the two candidates, Politico reports.

Said Weaver: “There’s a little bit of foot-dragging now it seems on their side. It may be that, you know, there may be some chickening out or, you know, an unwillingness to stand on stage and really debate with Bernie Sanders because they know Bernie Sanders is going to do quite well in that debate, frankly.”

A Trump vs. Sanders Debate?

May 26, 2016 · 8:46 am ET · 122 Comments

Rick Klein: “Did we close the door on debate season too soon? Donald Trump told Jimmy Kimmel Wednesday that he’d consider debating Bernie Sanders one-on-one … and Sanders quickly indicated that he’s interested. There are plenty of reasons to be skeptical of whether this is real, starting with Trump’s insistence that Sanders pony up cash for charity as a precondition. (We’ve seen where such demands ended in the past.) But this might be a wacky enough idea to happen.”

“Trump would love to elevate Sanders as a means of tweaking Hillary Clinton before the general election is officially upon us; Clinton, of course, is refusing to debate Sanders in California. And Sanders would love to showcase the general-election matchup he is pitching as stronger for Democrats in advance of voting in California June 7. The matchup only ‘SNL’ could imagine might be a fitting end to a wacky primary season.”

Jonathan Chait: “Sanders would get to be elevated to the role of imaginary Democratic candidate, using the platform to display himself outperforming Trump, as he has always claimed he could. The Trump debate would be a media spectacle, providing him with gobs of free publicity. Trump’s incentive is, perhaps, even stronger.”

Clinton Losing Ground with Sanders Supporters

May 25, 2016 · 5:14 pm ET · 277 Comments

A new Economist/YouGov poll finds 50% of Bernie Sanders voters are not yet ready to support Hillary Clinton in a Clinton-Trump general election match up.

“In fact, the percentage of Sanders supporters willing to vote for Clinton has dropped in the last few weeks.  At the end of April, 63% of Sanders supporters said they would vote for Clinton. Importantly, however, these supporters are not going directly to Trump; instead they are moving into the undecided category, going for a third candidate, or opting out of the race altogether.”

Sanders Wants Votes Reviewed In Kentucky

May 24, 2016 · 5:27 pm ET · 52 Comments

Wall Street Journal: “Would it change anything if Bernie Sanders actually narrowly won Kentucky’s presidential primary instead of narrowly losing it to Hillary Clinton?”

“Hoping to find out, the Sanders campaign is requesting a recanvass from the state, where he trails Mrs. Clinton by less than half a percentage point. The recanvass involves asking elections officials to review electronic voting machines and absentee ballots in the state’s 120 counties. State law allows him to request this at state expense. Unlike a recount, which he’d have to pay for, individual ballots will not be examined.”
