Schatz Says Democrats Will Nominate a Progressive

November 24, 2018 at 5:37 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Noting that “all of my friends appear to be running” for president, Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) took to Twitter and predicted that a progressive would ultimately win the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 2020 but that it would not signify a battle with centrists.

Said Schatz: “The progressive we nominate should also be capable of getting votes from moderates and even Republicans. That wouldn’t make them less progressive, that would make them better.”

He added: “We had a successful formula in 2018 which was to run on policy (mostly healthcare) and against corruption. We should do that again.”

Schatz Nudges 2020 Field to the Left

July 21, 2018 at 4:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As young, Twitter-friendly Democrats in the Senate go, Brian Schatz is slightly unusual: He really, seriously, definitely has no interest in running for president in 2020. But, slowly and beneath the radar, the low-profile 45-year-old progressive Senator from Hawaii has already started leaving his mark on that race,” New York magazine reports.

“And if all goes to plan, Schatz’s attempts to yank his headline-grabbing colleagues — including potential 2020 contenders like Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, and Bernie Sanders — to the left on his priorities will help shape his party’s policy backbone for the foreseeable future.”
