Grassley Breaks with Trump Over Whistleblower

October 1, 2019 at 1:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As President Trump and his allies attack the whistleblower that kicked off the House’s impeachment inquiry, the still unidentified person gained a powerful ally on Tuesday: Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley,” Politico reports.

“The most senior GOP senator has fashioned a career on protecting whistleblowers during presidencies of both parties. And in the middle of one of the most tempestuous political storms in two decades, the seventh-term Iowan is sticking to his position even if it’s at odds with the president himself.”

What Grassley Says Trump Really Believes on Trade

May 16, 2019 at 9:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) told Politico that President Trump doesn’t really like tariffs.

Said Grassley: “He believes in tariffs as a tool to get a negotiation as opposed to being an end in themselves. Then he hasn’t changed anything. If he has used tariffs because he believes they’re good, and I know he says that, but I don’t believe he actually believes that. I don’t see how he could believe it.”

He added: “He hasn’t changed the Republican Party. We’re still a party of free trade … I surely hope that he has learned from history that lower tariffs are good.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

“From the standpoint of a budget, the less words of the English language you use, the better off you are.”

— Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), quoted by The Hill, noting that when it comes to saving money in entitlement programs, it’s preferable to “just have figures in there” instead of spelling out specific reforms.
