Ned Lamont (D) is gauging interest in a comeback bid for Connecticut governor, the Greenwich Time reports.
“The Democratic insurgent who toppled Joe Lieberman in a Senate primary a decade ago but was ultimately thwarted by the incumbent in the general election is expected to hire a pollster to determine his gubernatorial prospects… Lamont, 63, said he plans to make a decison on whether to enter the wide open race by year’s end.”
“There will be no Camelot in Connecticut in 2018: Ted Kennedy Jr. declared Monday that he is not running for governor,” the Hartford Courant reports.
“The possibility of a Kennedy on the ballot in 2018 tantalized some Democratic insiders. Having the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy and the son of former U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts on the gubernatorial ballot would have brought star power and national attention to what is already expected to be a hotly contested race.”
Bridgeport, CT Mayor Joseph Ganim (D), who is mulling a run for Connecticut governor in 2018, told the Hartford Courant “that he should receive public financing for a statewide political campaign as a matter of fundamental fairness.”
“As a felon who was convicted of crimes related to his public office, Ganim cannot qualify for public financing under state law if he runs for governor in 2018. In response, he has filed nine pages of legal arguments with the State Elections Enforcement Commission in an attempt to seek a waiver of the law.”
Connecticut state Sen. Ted Kennedy Jr. (D) is said by multiple sources to be strongly leaning toward a run for Connecticut governor in 2018, the Connecticut Post reports.
“A person close to Kennedy put the chances at ’90 percent’ that the health care lawyer and son of the late ‘liberal lion’ Edward M. Kennedy jumps into the race, capitalizing on his name recognition and a potential vacuum if fellow Democrat Dannel P. Malloy opts not to seek a third term as governor.”
“I was never going to run away from the president. It was not even in consideration. I support the president. I think the president has been right. I mean, look at the numbers, look at the job growth, sustained job growth—the greatest in American history. The. Greatest. In. American. History. Why didn’t people run on that?”
— Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy (D), quoted by the Daily Beast, on why he was one of the few Democrats who survived the 2014 midterm elections.
