Cotton Defends Idea of Buying Greenland

August 26, 2019 at 12:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), writing in the New York Times:

“After news leaked last week that President Trump had expressed interest in acquiring Greenland from Denmark, his critics predictably derided him as crazy. But once again, the president is crazy like a fox. The acquisition of Greenland would secure vital strategic interests for the United States, economically benefit both us and Greenlanders, and would be in keeping with American — and Danish — diplomatic traditions.”

“Strategically positioned in the Arctic Circle, Greenland has long attracted the attention of American policymakers. As far back as 1867, Secretary of State William Seward explored the acquisition of Greenland around the time that he negotiated the purchase of Alaska from the Russians. I myself raised the prospect of acquiring Greenland with the Danish ambassador just last year.”

Trump Accuses Denmark Leader of ‘Nasty’ Remark

August 21, 2019 at 12:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump defended his decision to postpone a state visit to Denmark, accusing the country’s prime minister of making a “nasty and inappropriate statement” in rejecting his desire to discuss possibly purchasing Greenland, The Hill reports.

Said Trump: “I thought it was a very not nice way of saying something. They could have just told me no. All they had to say was we’d rather not do that. Don’t say, what an absurd idea that would be.”

Danish Lawmakers Furious Over Trump’s Cancelled Visit

August 21, 2019 at 8:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Danish lawmakers on Wednesday reacted in fury to President’s Trump’s postponement of his two-day visit in early September to Denmark after its prime minister said she was not interested in selling him the autonomous island of Greenland,” the Washington Post reports.

“Parliamentarians and former government ministers slammed the president’s behavior as juvenile, undiplomatic and insulting, though the government itself has yet to comment on the visit’s cancellation and instead scheduled a news conference for the afternoon.”

According to Politico, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen “is scheduled to speak to the press at 3 p.m. local time to address the U.S. snub — and there have been calls for her to avoid making the situation worse and risking a political crisis.”
