Ossoff May Run for Senate

December 14, 2018 at 9:57 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jon Ossoff (D) is considering another run for office, perhaps a challenge to Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) in 2020, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

Ossoff was dodgy about direct questions about his next step, saying he would “think really carefully” before making up his mind.

Voting Machine Glitches Roil Texas and Georgia Races

November 5, 2018 at 8:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Glitchy paperless voting machines are affecting an untold number of early voting ballots in Texas and Georgia, raising the specter that two of the most closely watched races could be marred by questions about whether the vote count is accurate,” Politico reports.

“Civil rights groups and voters in both states have filed complaints alleging that the ATM-style touchscreen machines inexplicably deleted some people’s votes for Democratic candidates or switched them to Republican votes.”

Judge Rules Against ‘Exact Match’ In Georgia

November 2, 2018 at 2:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A federal judge ruled Friday that Georgia’s “exact match” rules for voter registration will not apply for next week’s midterm, allowing people who have seen their voter registration held up to vote, The Hill reports.

The “exact match” law used by Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp’s office marks an applicant’s registration as “pending” if the personal information on their voter registration form doesn’t exactly match the information on the state’s Department of Driver Services or the Social Security Administration.

Isakson Already Planning for Re-Election Bid

February 21, 2018 at 8:28 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) said he plans to run for re-election in 2022, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reports.

“In fact, the senator’s staff said he filed his paperwork last year so that he could raise funds for his next campaign. Isakson won his third term to the U.S. Senate in 2016, about a year after he announced that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.”

Trump Tests Senate Race In Reliably Republican Georgia

August 22, 2016 at 2:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) “insists he won’t be a ‘volunteer apologist’ for Donald Trump or anyone else who utters something stupid, but that defiant independence is being sorely tested by the GOP presidential nominee’s sinking support and Democrat Hillary Clinton’s push into surprisingly competitive Georgia,” the AP reports.

“Recent polls show Trump and Hillary Clinton locked in a tight race as the Democrat opens a campaign office in the state and invests in a field organization. Isakson holds a single-digit lead over first-time candidate Jim Barksdale, a wealthy investment manager whose opposition to trade deals and calls for a higher minimum wage has attracted backers of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, the unsuccessful Democratic presidential candidate.”

Trump Could Put Georgia Senate Seat In Play

August 18, 2016 at 5:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Voters unhappy with either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump and “casting a ballot for a third-party candidate could shake up Sen. Johnny Isakson’s (R-GA) battle for a third term. With polls showing Democrat Jim Barksdale in striking distance, both campaigns are quietly bracing for a possible Jan. 10 runoff,” the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Isakson Says He Has Parkinson’s Disease

June 10, 2015 at 2:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 12 Comments

Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) said that “he has been receiving treatment for Parkinson’s disease, but added that the illness will not prevent him from seeking re-election next year,” the New York Times reports.

“Disclosures about health problems are challenging for politicians, and Mr. Isakson said that he wrestled with whether to go public with his illness. However, he said that his family decided that transparency was the best route.”

Nunn Could Run Again in Georgia

November 22, 2014 at 9:13 am EST By Taegan Goddard 9 Comments

Michelle Nunn (D) kept the door open for another campaign in an interview with the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Said Nunn: “I feel we ran a good campaign. I feel proud of it. We had a great team – volunteers and staff. You spend the first few days being disappointed. Then you spend the next few days feeling a lot of gratitude for the experience. And then you start to get into the analysis of it. I think that will go on for some time.”

She added: “I will stay involved in service. That’s been the trajectory of my whole career. I’m certainly invested in continuing to build the kind of Georgia electorate that I think would be most healthy for our state – a two-party dialogue, one that engages more and more people. I’ll just leave open the possibility of electoral office.”

Isakson Will Run for Third Term

November 11, 2014 at 9:49 am EST By Taegan Goddard 3 Comments

Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) “wants there to be no doubt he’s running for re-election,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

“Georgia’s soon-to-be senior senator is formally announcing he will seek a third term at 11 a.m. on Monday at the state capitol… Isakson has been eager to put to rest rumors that he wouldn’t run for another term – and scare off any potential GOP rivals. Among them is former Florida Rep. Allen West, though he has dismissed such talk, and a gaggle of ambitious up-and-coming Republicans.”

“Several rising Democratic contenders are also closely watching the race, though it’s unclear whether a marquee candidate would risk challenging Isakson.”
